Is this a social experiment?

Is anyone else panicking about this emergency act about to go through?

I just heard about it on the radio.

Are we all walking blindly into this?

Our freedom is being snatched from us while we are blindfolded with fear.

We must wake up!

Oh nelly don't be daft. People are dying. Because, you know, science?
There's no conspiracy. It's very real. I don't want anyone i know personally or love to be seriously ill or die so this is what we need to do. That's it.
It's not forever.

Falangalangadingdang · 23/03/2020 19:34

Hello DS is that you?

Do you need some more tinfoil? We've already spoken about this haven't we and we agreed you need to calm the fuck down and just do as advised so we can all stay alive.

Everyone keeps banging on about "protecting the most vulnerable" whilst simultaneously ignoring the fact that disabled people's right to essential care is being compromised. But no-one seems to care. Which shouldn't come as a surprise really. I mean society didn't care about disabled people before, they were hardly going to start now.

I thought that. Sad Those who were invisible and neglected before are becoming even more so.

Eckhart · 23/03/2020 19:38

We must wake up and do what, OP?

How do you suggest we play it, going forward?

Matildathehun77 · 23/03/2020 19:38

But actually the British Govt have been ridiculously polite and requested nicely at every stage...... the fact that some people will not do what common sense demands has caused this. If they had wanted to take away our freedom they could (and many would argue should) have done so, easily, much earlier.

BodiesMakeForGoodFertiliser · 23/03/2020 19:40

There is a lockdown where my family is. Not as strict as in Italy, but lockdown nonetheless. They also have mandatory face masks when outside. It has been like that for about a week now.
Government announced that there is already drop in new cases and if people last just that bit more (week and a bit) the restrictions will start easing up. And schools could re open in May.

Meanwhile, if UK continues the way it is, nkt only will we end up with tens of thousands of dead (who didn't have to die), we will also end up in this mess for much longer than few months. While other countries will start getting back to normal, we here will be still burying dead and suffer mentally, physically and economically.

No one should want that. That's what we can prevent by behaving as needed.

NiteFlights · 23/03/2020 19:40

The vast majority of people don’t even have anything to legitimately fear in this scenario

I beg to differ. There is a lot to be afraid of - unless you mean that most people don’t have to be afraid that they, themself, will die, in which case you are correct. Hmm

I do think the government has played the civil liberties angle surprisingly well, though. Most people now see the benefit of very draconian measures. In a democracy you have to have buy-in to this.

a lot of people have acted like utter idiots and shown they can’t be allowed to safeguard their own or others’ health, safety and lives. so unfortunately they won’t be trusted to do so, it will have to be imposed on them.

alloutoffucks · 23/03/2020 19:41

Hi Nelly, I think I know you in real life. Please contact those who support you. I think this is a very difficult time and you are struggling t cope.

Lovemusic33 · 23/03/2020 19:41

OP I think you need to calm down. People have survived far worse (the war for one). Yes it’s not much fun and yes we are all scared but it’s not forever, we have to do what is being asked of us to make the future safer.

Use the time wisely, get things done around the house and garden (if you have one), spend time with your family if you are stuck in with them, teach kids life skills.

We are bloody lucky that we have such things as the internet, Netflix, amazon prime, telephones and online shopping, we can survive pretty well stuck at home, we are just panicking because we are being told we can’t do certain things.

What ever is decided tonight we just have to go with it, the sooner we all do as we are told the sooner this will be over.

adaline · 23/03/2020 19:42

I’m not sure if it’s a social experiment but I find it shocking that the people are calling for their liberty to be taken so easily.

The way things stand, I'd rather lose my liberty than my life.

People are too stupid to be trusted, so we have to go into lockdown to save us from ourselves.

Halloweenbabyy · 23/03/2020 19:42

@NellyGrace mate your off your fucking tits.

NellyGrace · 23/03/2020 19:42

I’m not afraid of dying. Two kids in a tiny flat with no garden. No rights to leave. No freedom. I’m more afraid of living like this. Much more.

The bill lasts 2 years. At the very least i cant understand why it doesnt have a 3 monthly renewal. What if we dont all need to be locked down after 6 months.

Didn't Jeremy Corbin call for it to be reviewed after six months and they agreed that?

Bluetrews25 · 23/03/2020 19:44

If you worked in the NHS like me you would be begging for lockdown.
You have no idea. Angry
Go and read Anne Frank's diary FGS.
This is not about liberty, this is about as many of us as possible staying alive.
Or would you prefer to be a dead person in a theme park / cinema / pub?

devildeepbluesea · 23/03/2020 19:45

Fucking brilliant.

People are losing lives and livelihoods hand over fist.

Thanks to the entitled omniwankers who picnicked at a local country park, all carparks at local beauty spots are closed from tomorrow. So we can't even get out and about safely.

We really need the bloody conspiracy theorists now. Not.

LilQueenie · 23/03/2020 19:46

yes we are just like we did during spanish flu Hmm

BoingBoingyBoing · 23/03/2020 19:47

"I’m not afraid of dying."

Oh, that's alright then. Just carry on as you were. It's not like it's hugely contagious and potentially deadly to millions or anything.

Do you have a mirror? Go and look in it, and give yourself a fucking talking to.

TipseyTorvey · 23/03/2020 19:48

This reminds me of my psychology degree and the Milgram experiments. Fascinating. But not really replicable at this scale.

TitianaTitsling · 23/03/2020 19:49

You can die then if that's what you'd prefer. Just don't take up a hospital bed needed by a now infected key worker because you or some other selfish idiot didn't feel like just staying home.. Yep! The queues had already started outside bloody b&q as I drove to work this morning at our local hospital, the fact that the beach was also packed with tourers and caravans last night I'm finding incredulous!!

Darbs76 · 23/03/2020 19:49

Take your liberty for a few months or your life. Sadly people cannot play by the rules. We have no choice

Grasspigeons · 23/03/2020 19:50

Matildathehun77 - yes apparently i was put of date Grin i am so pleased that ammendmeng was made. Im not bonkers enough to think its all an experiment or that we dont need to lockdown but i was surprised by the original draft

ArriettyJones · 23/03/2020 19:52

I’m not afraid of dying. Two kids in a tiny flat with no garden. No rights to leave. No freedom. I’m more afraid of living like this. Much more.

Okay so the real problem is that your mental health is suffering under the strain of a difficult situation.

You need to break each day into blocks of an hour or two and work out cheap/easy/silly ways of occupying the children and preserving your sanity.

Find some children’s PE/ dance videos online. Schedule in a kids film each day. Get toddlers and up to help dust and tidy to music. Make salt dough. Build junk models. Do kitchen science. Paint a wall. Papier machier. Hand prints. CBeebies.

You can do this.

BodiesMakeForGoodFertiliser · 23/03/2020 19:52

We will know soon enough what's going to happen. I have facemasks coming soon for when I need to venture out. Who knows. I might be a carrier so I will at least help not to spread ot around while wearing them.

Wannabangbang · 23/03/2020 19:53

You are a mother with 2 kids and you would rather be dead. What an awful thought for them

2weeones · 23/03/2020 19:54

I have an illness that puts me on the vulnerable list so I have been self isolating with my kids. What annoys me is that people that are still going out and about with no care for others will get a ventilator over me if the Dr's had to make a choice. I could live another 50 years as far as my consultant is concerned but that won't matter as I will be seen as someone with an underlying health issue. That makes me so scared and angry that I'm doing all I can to stay alive and the OP is complaining about being stuck in with her kids.
Honestly this has shown me the very best and the worst in people.
