Is this a social experiment?

Is anyone else panicking about this emergency act about to go through?

I just heard about it on the radio.

Are we all walking blindly into this?

Our freedom is being snatched from us while we are blindfolded with fear.

We must wake up!

If people would just FUCKING NOT GATHER IN GROUPS we wouldn't need anything to be taken away. It's like a kid who keeps hitting his head with a metal toy- the adult takes away his choice to do that.

cardibach · 23/03/2020 19:18

I’m not calling for my freedom to be taken. I’ve taken my own. I’m calling for the freedom of total wankers to put me at risk to be taken.

PennyNotSoWise · 23/03/2020 19:19

Freedom being snatched? We had choice.

WhatsTheFrequencyKennneth · 23/03/2020 19:19

I'm worried about the changes to the Mental health act already implemented giving powers to detain you for an indefinite period of time if accused of a crime after assessment by only one doctor.

DesLynamsMoustache · 23/03/2020 19:20

You'd rather be dead than stay in the house most of the time for a few weeks? Right-o then...

Jimmers · 23/03/2020 19:20

@iklboo

Christ on a socially distanced bike.

That actually made me laugh 😂

Mlou32 · 23/03/2020 19:21

I’m not sure if it’s a social experiment but I find it shocking that the people are calling for their liberty to be taken so easily.

I'm fascinated by this too. I totally get the need for some fast acting powers and a lockdown - but in the eagerness peole seem very trusting of the government. The bill lasts 2 years. At the very least i cant understand why it doesnt have a 3 monthly renewal. What if we dont all need to be locked down after 6 months.
I have a particukar interest because it changes ehcps and adult social care. I fully understand thst all chikdren have their education messed up now - but surely its not for 2 years.

eaglejulesk · 23/03/2020 19:22

If we have to live like this we might as well be dead.

Grow up!!!! Compared to what previous generations of people have had to deal with we've got it easy. Whatever happened to resilience?

Thereflex9 · 23/03/2020 19:22

You can die then if that's what you'd prefer. Just don't take up a hospital bed needed by a now infected key worker because you or some other selfish idiot didn't feel like just staying home.

LotsaDo · 23/03/2020 19:22

Well it’s certainly interesting how quickly people accept (even ask for) restrictions on their own movements when there is mass panic. The vast majority of people don’t even have anything to legitimately fear in this scenario and yet they’re asking for military to be called in to prevent people from going out. It’s something that would have been unimaginable a few weeks ago. It’s interesting to see how quickly mentality can change.

I completely agree.

BoingBoingyBoing · 23/03/2020 19:23

"Just don't take up a hospital bed"

You can bet your arse they'll be the first in line demanding help when they develop a little cough.

ArriettyJones · 23/03/2020 19:23

@NellyGrace you’ve been posting this utter bollocks for a while now. You’re not making any sense and you sound as though you need MH support.

What are you hoping to achieve by going on and on?

Mlou32 · 23/03/2020 19:24

Because there are two choices of things to be taken away - peoples liberty or peoples life. It really is that simply. There are going to be death rates in 4 figures if people won't stay in. Boris has already tried the advising us route - folk won't listen. Now he has to enforce it.

BodiesMakeForGoodFertiliser · 23/03/2020 19:24

People are generally stupid. They need control. As shown in last few days.

If it was babies dying (god forbid) I vet ya we would not have these issues, need legislation and have threads like this. Everyone would just stay the fuck home for few weeks

Thespiceisright · 23/03/2020 19:24

Grasspigeons exactly. I don’t think people are aware it lasts two years.

It means of something bad happened we wouldn’t be able to protest. We’ve just asked, shouted and begged to be locked away.

ArriettyJones · 23/03/2020 19:24

Grow up!!!! Compared to what previous generations of people have had to deal with we've got it easy. Whatever happened to resilience?

Well said.

BoingBoingyBoing · 23/03/2020 19:26

"I don’t think people are aware it lasts two years. "

It doesn't. The bill was amended to 6 months.

pigsDOfly · 23/03/2020 19:26

Perhaps people's mentality has changed so quickly because we've seen the reports from China, Italy, Spain and so on.

Which part of 'dead' are people not getting.

Grasspigeons · 23/03/2020 19:27

Well thats a huge relief BoingBoingyBoing so it was worth scruitiny because it got amended to something more sensible

SnoozyLou · 23/03/2020 19:28

God help us.

Is this a social experiment?

Not only that but what the bill means for adult social care. Everyone keeps banging on about "protecting the most vulnerable" whilst simultaneously ignoring the fact that disabled people's right to essential care is being compromised. But no-one seems to care. Which shouldn't come as a surprise really. I mean society didn't care about disabled people before, they were hardly going to start now.

I agree - this will make a fascinating psychology study when it’s finally all over. I get that a limited lockdown is probably our only option now but I’m marvelling at how so many people are actively clamouring for it. Amazed at how quickly authoritarian tendencies come to the fore when there’s fear involved.

We’ll see if they’re still of the same opinion three months down the line.

goldpartyhat · 23/03/2020 19:31

Its not forever.

If we do nothing we will have an NHS in crisis with who lives and who dies being made of the hoof.

Is that preferable?
