Do you think reporting is being restricted?

I have noticed that the news and reporting is quite different from lots of news stories. No footage of outside hospital's, no interviews with relatives or people with the virus or the medics. Initially there was some but now they only seem to show scenes in other countries. Is this by agreement with all news agencies? It feels odd compared to the usual circus! Not sure I mind just curious if others have noticed.

Thank you so much tryingtoprep - those are all lovely suggestions and I will try some. I'd actually be better on my own. It's trying to manage 2 children and their energy/moods - increasing dependence on screens that is getting to me.

I am having panic attacks but the opposite to those who can't bear to go outside. I'm claustrophobic at the best of times and manage it by doing exercise/walking/running. There will be so many other people like this too, I know.

Falacy · 23/03/2020 00:25

I think it's an extremely ill thought out policy trying not to panic people by downplaying to a dangerous extent.

Exactly this.

ThePawtriarchy · 23/03/2020 00:27

A friend of mine lives abroad and one care home has had 50 people die. They are people known in the community and who’s families can’t be together to grieve.

tryingtoprep · 23/03/2020 00:33

It's horrible being trapped inside. I'm trying not to think about it. I'm really hoping those of us without any outside space are allowed out for some sort of exercise even if brief daily slots. I'd be happy to have a late night slot even 1 or 2am so the earlier times could be for those with younger children.

Fieldofgreycorn · 23/03/2020 00:37

It is a major exercise in control by fear isn’t it. Almost as if someone has decided to press the reset button on the human race.

alloutoffucks · 23/03/2020 00:39

Yes
The D notice committee still exists. They can legally restrict reporting.

ArriettyJones · 23/03/2020 00:41

@NellyGrace you sound unwell. Can you seek MH support via phone or internet?

PicsInRed · 23/03/2020 00:42

I don't doubt it for a second, have suspected for while, as the reporting has been more and more "on message". Some pained faces and meaningful "am I saying that right?" looks between reporters as they very carefully say certain things.

No doubt wartime censorship is in place.

CandyLeBonBon · 23/03/2020 00:44

I have several friends on the frontline of the nhs. According to them in our local hospital there are 39 people in ICU with breathing difficulties - only 2 on which are confirmed covid cases. My county is only reporting 27 cases in the WHOLE (very large) county so it does seem that there may be some downplaying of the numbers because of lack of testing. Another friend said that the hospital she works at has run out of space in the morgue. This is coming directly from the people who are dealing with this direct. It really is t a conspiracy.

ArriettyJones · 23/03/2020 00:45

I think it's an extremely ill thought out policy trying not to panic people by downplaying to a dangerous extent

News is always downplayed in times of national emergency. It is almost necessary. There are too many mentally fragile people who panic or go to pieces much too quickly. At a national level, that is dangerous.

PicsInRed · 23/03/2020 00:46

The fact that no one has questioned the disappearances of both Chris Whitty and Prince Charles. Where are they? Are they well?

alloutoffucks · 23/03/2020 00:48

And The Queen.

Jerseygaly · 23/03/2020 01:02

Definitely downplayed.
They even said in tgeir document they would counter 'misinfornation'
So they remove stuff from twitter and FB.
Get stuff deleted from here. In particular one worried about thread had at least 3 people trying to prevent discussion.
We are still being fed that all old with health issues yet in other countries (and here) they have 30yo in icu.
By manipulating us they have idiots out up Snowden. Very much not a war effort to pull together. And morons going to devon and Cornwall. Even more stupid people who continued to go to EU and some probably got stuck.
No testing so we cannot notify of it and noone stays home or stays away from family in the home.

HooverVacuum · 23/03/2020 01:02

The D notice committee still exists. They can legally restrict reporting.

You are a bit out of date there - D notices are now called DSMA (Defence and Security Media Advisory) notices and have been for a couple of years. There haven't been any DSMA notices to date in respect of coronavirus.

Notices typically are directed to matters of defence and security safety - like don't publish pictures of these army individuals filmed in Iran or Iraq because it will put their lives at risk as they are working in terrorist environments. It's not a general censorship system at the behest of the government. It's not impossible that there would be a reason related to coronavirus to issue one but it would be pretty exceptional in my experience; they are very rarely issued.

If you want to read more about the DSMA system you can find it here:

Prince Charles was pictured having dinner (a huge dinner) sitting opposite someone who has now been confirmed to have CV19. (Prince Albert of somewhere?) - he should be, and probably is, in isolation.

The man who wrote the Imperial College document - Ferguson - that reportedly changed Dom Cummings's mind about herd immunity has been confirmed to have the virus - may explain the absence of Chris Whitty. It's rife in Whitehall/Westminster - reportedly. May well be some reporting restrictions to quell panic. I wouldn't be surprised.

SuckingDieselFella · 23/03/2020 01:06

No idea what people on this thread are smoking but it's mighty strong.

Lifeisabeach09 · 23/03/2020 01:07

Another friend said that the hospital she works at has run out of space in the morgue.

Yep, local mortuary is at 80% capacity (was told this by a area GP). Increase in elderly dying of pneumonia in the community. Not tested for Covid. I don't know numbers.

PyongyangKipperbang · 23/03/2020 01:07

I think they are trying to tread a fine line between making people understand the seriousness of the situation, without inducing yet more dickhead behaviour with panic buying etc. No one wants a lock down but the fucking arseholes who seem determined to survive on loo roll and bread for the next 3 months are going to make it happen.

I am no tory, never have been, loathe them with a passion. But I think BoJo is doing his best in shitty situation, and if that includes supressing a certain sector of the print media from inflaming things more (Yes Daily Mail/The Sun et al I am talking about you) then so be it.

Lifeisabeach09 · 23/03/2020 01:10

Prince Charles was pictured having dinner (a huge dinner) sitting opposite someone who has now been confirmed to have CV19.

Yes, it would be a real shame for a member of the royal family to become ill with covid. Not just a pleb disease then.

But, don't worry, dear royals, we are thinking of YOU. Grin

alloutoffucks · 23/03/2020 01:10

@Jerseygaly Yes there are people clearly paid to challenge postings on social media that are "off message" especially when they ate quoting WHO and other actual experts. They all use certain phrases/styles that you see again and again.
And yes posts on social media are sometimes removed because of this.

alloutoffucks · 23/03/2020 01:11

And I agree that the minimising will kill people.

CandyLeBonBon · 23/03/2020 01:12

No idea what people on this thread are smoking but it's mighty strong

Meaning what exactly?

alloutoffucks · 23/03/2020 01:13

It is just a way of trying to rubbish what we have all noticed. We are not daft.

AstonishingMouse · 23/03/2020 01:14

What PyongyangKipperbang said.
Masses of idiots climbing Snowdon or masses of idiots panic buying - the government and press have a moral responsibility to try and dissuade both of these groups from further acts of stupidity

DioneTheDiabolist · 23/03/2020 01:15

Not sure about restricted, but I do think theres been a change in emphasis in reporting.
