Do you think reporting is being restricted?

I have noticed that the news and reporting is quite different from lots of news stories. No footage of outside hospital's, no interviews with relatives or people with the virus or the medics. Initially there was some but now they only seem to show scenes in other countries. Is this by agreement with all news agencies? It feels odd compared to the usual circus! Not sure I mind just curious if others have noticed.

Imperial College report was available while Boris was just talking about herd immunity. No journalist has challenged this basic lie that policy was supposedly changed when the report was supposedly published.

Normally journalists would be all over this.

DioneTheDiabolist · 23/03/2020 01:51

The media has a powerful place in our society. In times like these it is their duty to be responsible. I hope they exercise knowledge, wisdom and health as they do their job.Flowers

alloutoffucks · 23/03/2020 01:52

i.e. support the government

DandyPenguin · 23/03/2020 01:52

Thanks alloutoffucks

Yes that seems a very negligent policy by the supermarkets Shock

defthand · 23/03/2020 01:54

I’m pretty sure I read about a media suppression order being invoked, so yes, definitely.

Been very disappointed in the Guardian’s reporting. The Telegraph has been doing a better job of holding the government to account, and that’s just bizarre.

alloutoffucks · 23/03/2020 01:58

I love The Last Leg, their satire is often quite biting. But not on this issue.
Also pretty sure face book groups set up to talk about it are subject to any order as well. Very noticeable change on threads allowed over night by same mod. So much that group members started openly talking about a suppression order. They knew what was happening.

We don't have free speech here.

Dancinghorses36 · 23/03/2020 02:01

Well I tried to report how bad it is in my district and got reported, Im a nurse on the front line..I'm tired and stressed and have three daughters and a husband to go home to and a senior consultant telling me we can't cope so yet mumsnet have deleted all of my four posts...I've copied them and sent them to the papers as we are at a loss as to what to do

alloutoffucks · 23/03/2020 02:04

@Dancinghorses36 Sadly the newspapers are probably not allowed to publish them.

DandyPenguin · 23/03/2020 02:06

I saw one of the threads Dancinghorses and it seems your threads were deleted, or locked down because you may not have been telling the truth.

DandyPenguin · 23/03/2020 02:09

I should add Dancinghorses that I didn’t see your original posts so don’t know whether you were contradicting yourself or lying, but that was the feeling from others who did.

Mummyoflittledragon · 23/03/2020 02:10

Anne
I see. Yes it is that one. I see you’ve found your voice here Dancing. I was typing when it was pulled. Good on you for telling the press.

BuzzingButterfly · 23/03/2020 02:18

Definitely agree with this - there’s currently an outbreak of swine flu in Shetland (along side the coronavirus) that has been seriously underreported. I think it’s more to do with controlling fear though!

Nat6999 · 23/03/2020 02:20

We had 3 cases shipped in to our hospital at the beginning of the outbreak here, yet according to the news didn't have any recorded cases for 10 days. I'm getting very distrustful of the reporting of exactly how many cases there are, don't forget that only hospitalised patients are getting tested, anyone who is ill at home may or may not have Covid 19. The fact that the army is on standby is getting frightening & knowing that the government can bring in powers to do whatever they want worries me, plus what state the country will be in when we come out the other side & how much we will in effect be charged to pay for the debt that has been raised during this time.

defthand · 23/03/2020 02:23

It’s very disquieting to hear of these voices from the frontlines being silenced.

The best way to fight a pandemic is transparency with the public. That was supposed to be the big takeaway from the Spanish flu...

DioneTheDiabolist · 23/03/2020 02:26

I hope they'll support the people alloutoffucks.

DandyPenguin · 23/03/2020 02:29

The lack of testing is what worries me, it means of course we can’t have accurate figures and so the forecast planning will be inaccurate.

I’m one of many it seems who is recovering at home after being told by a doctor from 111 that I probably have Covid-19. But I don’t know for sure whether I do as I haven’t been tested and won’t unless I deteriorate badly and get hospitalised. Which obviously I hope doesn’t happen to me or anyone else who’s been ‘diagnosed’ as having it by a doctor without a test.

AnneOfTeenFables · 23/03/2020 02:30

Dancing I am glad you took the advice to go to the newspapers. Anyone can post anything on here. The mainstream media are a much better medium for whistleblowing than an anonymous forum and a thread where facts were contradictory and someone was encouraging you to fabricate stories.

recall · 23/03/2020 02:34

And everyone ignoring the fact that you can’t get food delivered ....can’t book a slot, and if you have one most of the items are taken off it. Denise Welsh on Twatter was being scornful of the huge queues outside the supermarkets, but how else are people meant to get food ?

HeIenaDove · 23/03/2020 02:35

@ArriettyJones Apparently not

HeIenaDove · 23/03/2020 02:36

Denise Welsh was insisting on going to Tenerife a few weeks back so should STFU

LonginesPrime · 23/03/2020 02:55

It does seem like it's all being played down. Especially the government's lack of preparedness and their bright ideas to make everyone feel safe and hopeful.

At the gov press conference earlier (i.e. Sunday), it went:

Gov:** vulnerable people, stay inside and don't go to the shops, we've got your backs and the food will magically come to you.

Journo:** Right, so how is that actually going to happen then?

**^

Gov:** Erm, well we have until Tuesday (when people get their letters) to sort that out so it will all be fine. Hmm

user1471439240 · 23/03/2020 03:03

Only believe half of what you see and nothing you hear may be apt, who knows? Legacy media is clearly more able to be restricted, social media is believed to be not. Ultimately people have good intentions in times of crisis and seek hope once the fear subsides.

The80sweregreat · 23/03/2020 03:10

D M showed a man on a trolley being wheeled into hospital today.,
It's being restricted I think. Subtle changes in news feed and lots put out over and over.
Why aren't people staying at home?

SchadenfreudePersonified · 23/03/2020 03:10

They don’t want the masses to panic/riot/loot. They’ve depleted the police force/army too much

I think you're right.

All essential and emergency services have been cut to the bone by successive governments starting with Thatcher. It's a short-sighted policy and has always been a recipe for disaster - but hey, so what? They can cash in on this by employing shyster organisations run by their rich mates and make themselves a fortune. That's what's important after all.
