Banning sake of alcohol

nicknackpaddy · 21/03/2020 08:23

I wonder if shops should voluntarily stop this or the government should ban it to help protect vulnerable children and adults from the expected rise in domestic violence cases.

One gin manufacturer is stopping production and making hand sanitizers instead, maybe others could do this too.

Banning alcohol won't help.

Donating to refuge will

I think as a new homeschooler wine will be my saviour. Tesco are delivering today (thank fuck) my order includes enough wine to get me through the 2 weeks :)

FudgeBrownie2019 · 21/03/2020 11:31

I don't believe that alcohol is what causes DV and don't think reducing the sale or even banning it will have any great impact on DV rates.

It's terrible, but DV is going to happen even more now.

Rainbunny · 21/03/2020 11:32

YABU! As many others have already noted - alcohol doesn't cause DV and if it was banned it would immediately create a black market with criminal behaviour involved and a spike in related crime - and those who commit DV are very likely to get their hands on it anyway. You'll only end up with people making their own bootleg stuff and I'm not talking about middle-aged men home brewing craft beer or fruit wines!

And from a purely selfish standpoint, I know that if this drags on into the summer one of the few pleasures that many of us would have left would be to enjoy a meal outside with a nice chilled glass or two of wine. Goodness, life is going to be grim enough over the next few months.

Humans have been making and enjoying alcohol for thousands of years. It is interwoven into the fabric of societies all over the world and it was good enough for Jesus at the last supper then it's more than good enough for me!

Wolfff · 21/03/2020 11:45

As someone who grew up with an alcoholic father it won’t help. They are addicts and their primary relationship is with alcohol. Illegal stills will spring up and they will get their fix some phone. Spouses or families just get in the way. It will cause even more aggression and violence if the supply is suddenly cut off.

WeAllHaveWings · 21/03/2020 11:47

We are only a few days into social distancing and isolation, what barmy ideas are folk going to come up with when we are 10 weeks in!! 🤣

We need government enforced hobbies to keep our minds more productively occupied.

Ohtherewearethen · 21/03/2020 11:49

This is the shittest idea since Boris Johnson.

ChocolateQuiltedShitPig · 21/03/2020 11:49

Ffs

EthelMayFergus · 21/03/2020 12:30

Some people do become violent/nasty/unreasonable when they're drunk though. People who are perfectly pleasant when sober. And some people drink more when they're not working, so I can see where the op's coming from. Most of us are sensible drinkers but if your childhood/life has been or is affected by a bored=drunk=nasty type of person, (especially as they can now only do this in the privacy of their own home or 'behind closed doors') then I bet the op's not the only person wishing for a ban.

bemoreeverything · 21/03/2020 12:38

No. Because anyone who is alcohol dependent could actually die.

Vulpine · 21/03/2020 12:38

my new roles of home nurse and home schooler have required wine of an evening as a necessity!

bemoreeverything · 21/03/2020 12:39

Sit down on your sofa, have a cuppa and let the smart ones sort out this shit

This is up there in my list of 'best things I have seen on Mumsnet'

packetandtripe · 21/03/2020 12:40

This is one ridiculous thread.

Moodymagpie · 21/03/2020 12:58

Lol. I find it funny how mumsnet can attack someone for asking if they're addicted for one glass of wine a night and tell her she has a problem.. Now the OP is being unreasonable for suggesting alcohol should be banned because alcohol is the only vice... HmmWine

shinyredbus · 21/03/2020 13:02

Jesus fucking wept. Let’s just all ban every god damn thing and lock ourselves in separate rooms. Why you think banning alcohol is the answer I don’t know. I knew men who don’t need one drop to be abusive..

Youcanstay · 21/03/2020 13:05

Yanbu

user1493413286 · 21/03/2020 13:12

If this was the solution to stopping domestic violence and child abuse it’d be great but it also would have been done years ago.
A glass of wine is one of the few pleasures a lot of us have at the moment; drinking loads obviously isn’t good especially to remain in good health but we can’t have everything taken away

TheArchSorcererofContwaraburg · 21/03/2020 13:15

I think the real pandemic is sadly a permanent condition known as The Stupid.

YABU.
