Banning sake of alcohol

nicknackpaddy · 21/03/2020 08:23

I wonder if shops should voluntarily stop this or the government should ban it to help protect vulnerable children and adults from the expected rise in domestic violence cases.

One gin manufacturer is stopping production and making hand sanitizers instead, maybe others could do this too.

Terrible idea. We need to keep people content in their homes, whatever it reasonably takes.

Also it's good for the economy.

Burgerandchipvan · 21/03/2020 08:44

Alcohol isn't to blame for DV. Abusers are.

Greggers2017 · 21/03/2020 08:46

You do realise you'd have quite a few deaths from people who are seriously alcohol dependent don't you? If they stop drinking suddenly and don't do a drink down plan they can go into severe withdrawal and the risk of seizures or even death. I don't think the NHS needs that right now.

Marmite27 · 21/03/2020 08:47

It’ll probably be a ‘soft’ ban. Rumour has it out Aldi isn’t going to be restocking alcohol to prioritise food on their deliveries. No doubt the middle aisle crap will go the same way if this carries on.

Didkdt · 21/03/2020 08:49

Grin vodka on cornflakes

Firstly it's vulnerable people men women elderly young whatever who might be subjected to abuse

Secondly alcohol consumption is a setting, not the cause of DV and other forms of abuse

ItsAllTheDramaMickIJustLoveIt · 21/03/2020 08:49

Alcohol can be a trigger. But so can no alcohol. And a tonne of other “excuses”. And many like my ex don’t need a single drop to be abusive. A ban won’t solve that particular problem in any way at all.

MarginalGain · 21/03/2020 08:49

I would think that if the supermarkets cut their alcohol offering, the corner shops will pick it right up.

It’s people like you OP who wind me up. Are you a social scientist? Thought not. And your fake concern is ridiculous. Sit down on your sofa, have a cuppa and let the smart ones sort out this shit.

MarginalGain · 21/03/2020 08:57

Sit down on your sofa, have a cuppa and let the smart ones sort out this shit.

Very unpleasant.

ScarlettBlaize · 21/03/2020 08:59

Yabu

My violent ex barely touched a drop.

Alcohol is the only thing calming me down in the evenings when the stress starts to get on top of me. It's making life tolerable and mildly pleasurable.

Straycatstrut · 21/03/2020 08:59

swimming in virus killing chlorine water.

Where? All my local pools are closed. I'm the most Sad about this. We LOVE swimming it's our favourite exercise.

Alcohol can be a trigger. But so can no alcohol.

Exactly. It'd make the problem worse in a lot of houses - anger about it taken out on the victims.

I had half a bottle of wine last night, once my boys were asleep (first time in about 4 months) and it was nice, really relaxing. Got another on order - but going to pace with that one! Home schooling a 3 & 7 year old for months, being inside so much more (with a big hyper puppy also) when I'm not used to it is going to be tough and this will help me a little bit on the evenings.

Ihateselfishbastards · 21/03/2020 09:00

Rumour has it = completely made up

ItsAllTheDramaMickIJustLoveIt · 21/03/2020 09:00

This made me giggle. I feel this way about myself. I know fuck all about what’s for the best so have conceded the best thing I can do is obediently do as I’m told and hope our government by some miracle, are making the right choices.

nicknackpaddy · 21/03/2020 09:02

Fake concern ? Fuck off. You don't know why I'm concerned.

nicknackpaddy you are absolutely right; I don’t know why you are concerned.

JaceLancs · 21/03/2020 09:18

I’m slogging my guts out working to support vulnerable people - shopping for elderly neighbours and DM
Dcat and gin are all that’s keeping me going!

swishthecat · 21/03/2020 09:29

Spreading this sort of rubbish is what causes panic buying. Alcohol sales are worth millions to Aldi, they're not going to wave bye bye to that sort of profit so that they can sell more cheap bog roll and carrots instead.

TheWordmeister · 21/03/2020 09:34

Don’t be daft.

This is one if the silliest things I’ve read in a complete sea of silliness.

Samtsirch · 21/03/2020 09:37

And here are all of the lovely , supportive kindly mumsnetters again.
Politicians keep telling us that the worst of times brings out the best in humanity.
They obviously haven’t been on mumsnet ,
or to Sainsbury’s.
😂🤣😂

Chinks123 · 21/03/2020 09:40

My DF is an alcoholic, I think going cold turkey would kill him before Coronavirus would.

DrinkSangriaInThePark · 21/03/2020 09:41

So millions of people who drink responsibly have to go without because some violent thuggish pricks get more violent and thuggish with alcohol?

Flipreverseit · 21/03/2020 09:47

I am not a big drinker and very rarely drink at home but genuinely a nightly glass of wine has kept me from having a total meltdown this week and helped me sleep.
I’m fully aware that in normal circumstances this is not a healthy attitude but these are about as far from normal circumstances as it’s possible to be!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 21/03/2020 09:47

Alcohol doesn’t cause DV. It is used as an excuse for it

THIS ^

I'm also concerned for all the people stuck in with dv and child abuse

And THIS ^

I'm hoping that where it is known that women/children are vulnerable, social services will be taking as much extra care as possible. This is such a horrible situation and my heart aches for the families who dread an abuser coming home in the evening, and who now may get no respite at all. God help them

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 21/03/2020 09:50

God the stupid is strong on here currently
Hmm

OhioOhioOhio · 21/03/2020 09:51

Yeah. My x didn't need alcohol to speak to me like a piece of shit. Coffee suited him perfectly.
