Now I really am scared

The provisions that the government are making indicate to me that either they are afraid of rioting (which occurs when a population loses faith in the government) or the Corona crisis is going to go on for at least a year.

Closing the pubs and venues has really brought it home to me how bad this is. I am self isolating, just nearing the end of my first week after social distancing for the previous two weeks, so I thought that I had come to terms with it. But it has hit me again listening to this press conference and quite frankly, I am afraid.

I think that the British mentality wasnt able to deal with the government going in all guns blazing. We've seen a fair amount of blatent ignoring of advice and badly behaved shoppers, and it's kicked the 'pushing into queues' tutting throughout the nation. Its got the nation behind the stronger action that is inevitably rolling our way, probably after the weekend.
I think some clever psychology is at work.
Now that people have spied those people, now that they have seen whats going on in Italy, now I think people are actually WANTING some sort of lockdown because they dont trust the idiots who are blatently disregarding the social distancing advice and putting everyone at risk.
If they had clamped down from the outset, even if it had been warranted by the science, the numbers would have been very low and all the people who just 3 weeks ago were calling those on the Coronavirus threads 'hysterical' would have been outraged that their liberty was being curtailled.
We would have then had major civil unrest on our hands too, along with a pandemic. Conspiracy theories would have abounded and a certain sector would have been saying it was just an excuse to cut our freedom. I think people would have got hurt.

I’m interested to see what they do in Australia as it feels like people would have the same mentality as here.

TheLadyAnneNeville · 20/03/2020 22:30

Yes, I imagine many people will die from domestic abuse, drunk driving, crime such as burglary/muggings, road rage, shopping rage, despair (suicide), anxiety (suicide), loneliness (suicide).

We’ll need the army on the streets to maintain law and order because the Tory austerity measures decimated the police force.

emmcan · 20/03/2020 22:33

It is pretty bad.
The rest of the country may get away with a it a bit, but the early numbers are that London is going to be a sight worse than Italy.
It got left too long for people to take responsibility for their own health.

I'm very upset about the huge economic cost of the response strategy.

AmelieTaylor · 20/03/2020 23:19

@RuffleCrow

Some apparent mumsnetters aren't satisfied unless we're making ourselves physically ill with the stress of worrying about illness. What good does that level of hysteria do anyone?! It doesn't help doctors save lives, that's for sure. Take your bone-white, shaking fingers off the caps lock and chill the fuck out. biscuit

What do you mean about ‘apparent Mumsnetters’ who do you think they actually are?

I am worried sick about Covid-19. I’m not hysterical. Some of us have very good reason to be scared for our loved ones & ourselves.

I suggest you don’t read the Covid threads as all you do is try to put people down

Take your biscuit...

AmelieTaylor · 20/03/2020 23:22

@RuffleCrow

Oh my goodness @thepeopleversuswork i'm not sure a single glass of wine (see previous post) is going to cut it for you. Valium, maybe

Stop behaving like a prize bitch FFS

AmelieTaylor · 20/03/2020 23:23

@Forza14

Joe Rogan had Michael Osterman (a virologist) on last week and he said: “I’m not trying to scare you out of your wits, I’m trying to scare you into your wits”

Great quote!!

FlushedZebra · 20/03/2020 23:29

I feel exactly the same as you AmelieTaylor.

Angry with them for not acting sooner. They actively let so many people get the virus. Deliberately. I have been going on about this for weeks on here and irl (and been called a 'scaremonger'). I've just namechanged (slightly) because I keep letting so much real life info slip on here....

But I'm scared, and we could all see the writing on the wall if we read up on the seriousness of this. SO many people are suffering already. From all the repercussions of this, not just the virus.

AmelieTaylor · 20/03/2020 23:31

@Reginabambina

I had a little glass of wine!

I’m eating a lot of veg, I’m taking vitamins.

Fuck off with not drinking!!😊

Now I really am scared
AmelieTaylor · 20/03/2020 23:32

@FlushedZebra - exactly!!

KinkyFink · 21/03/2020 09:48

Since we learned that alcohol kills the virus I've been gargling with vodka every night...

HooverVacuum · 21/03/2020 15:44

Most commercial vodka is 40% alcohol which isn't strong enough. You need 60% alcohol to kill the virus I believe. You can get higher % alcohol vodka but you have to look for it.

I can't imagine gargling with vodka is good for your throat.
