Now I really am scared

The provisions that the government are making indicate to me that either they are afraid of rioting (which occurs when a population loses faith in the government) or the Corona crisis is going to go on for at least a year.

Closing the pubs and venues has really brought it home to me how bad this is. I am self isolating, just nearing the end of my first week after social distancing for the previous two weeks, so I thought that I had come to terms with it. But it has hit me again listening to this press conference and quite frankly, I am afraid.

@AmelieTaylor join us in our drink fest. I meant no worth worrying about in that there is genuinely nothing that any of us can do tonight beyond trying trying to salvage our mental health.

I’m considering a Poladark marathon later tonight (starting with the earlier seasons before he turned into a complete arsehole). Anyone want to join me?

It's not going to be a year if people followed guidelines - I know offices in Wuhan that have reopened within 10 weeks but then again they did as they were instructed

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 20/03/2020 18:41

Do you have any alcohol in your house? If I were you I’d just pour myself a big drink and watch a tv show. It’s not worth worrying about now.

Ahhh my future wife! I found you!!

nowmorethanever · 20/03/2020 18:51

I think what regina means is that worry is a pointless activity

That was how I took it too. Not that there's nothing to worry about, just that the best thing to do this evening is to try to forget about it for now.

@WreckTangle95 I'd be willing to bet that school won't go back this school year. If the outbreak is meant to peak in June, well......

That said, I'm taking it a day at a time at the moment. If I thought too far ahead I would panic. I'm just focusing on the here and now.

WineGin

Moomin8 · 20/03/2020 18:57

I felt way worse when they were just going to let it burn through the population.

IrisAtwood · 20/03/2020 20:22

@WreckTangle95 They were talking on R4 news at lunchtime about the fact that children in Yr 6 primary and GCSE yr were effectively leaving their school today.

@SapphireSalute You have made me laugh about watching Masterchef! We watched Masterchef Canada last week. If you’re talking about eating weird things check out Geo Duck 🤢

I’m not sure why pubs closing did this particularly. To be frank pubs etc not closing was keeping me on edge.

Although if people do feel this way now they closed that’s good because it might help with social distancing. (Not necessary you op if you’ve been doing it).

IrisAtwood · 20/03/2020 20:28

@TeaAndDarkToast Hope you enjoy your Christmas Scotch. Next time my DP goes shopping he’s going to pick up some more alcohol.

@DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou sadly I’m currently taken but once this is all over we’ll see Wink

(Just to clarify that was extremely lighthearted and I’m quite drunk now after battling a massive spider this evening, forget corona virus, I nearly died of a heart attack this evening)

IrisAtwood · 20/03/2020 20:30

@MarshaBradyo It just seems more real and more serious with places closing. I also had a completely irrational feeling that my self isolation was a choice, now there is little choice!

@Reginabambina Who won?

I'm pleased things are being put in place and we seem as a country to finally be taking it a bit more seriously but yes the flip side of that is it does also feel more scary.

Would it be acceptable to give up Lent now, given the circumstances, never have I wanted to binge eat chocolate more!

RuffleCrow · 20/03/2020 20:38

Of course a single glass of wine and a bit of escapist telly is a good idea right now. Some apparent mumsnetters aren't satisfied unless we're making ourselves physically ill with the stress of worrying about illness. What good does that level of hysteria do anyone?! It doesn't help doctors save lives, that's for sure. Take your bone-white, shaking fingers off the caps lock and chill the fuck out. Biscuit

TeaAndDarkToast · 20/03/2020 20:39

Thank you. It's still untouched in the wardrobe. I am strenghtehning resolve for tougher times ahead -like when the Easter Eggs have disappeared- Grin

TeaAndDarkToast · 20/03/2020 20:39

*sorry. strengthening (and that's before i've had a drink)

Reginabambina · 20/03/2020 20:43

@IrisAtwood honestly I’m not sure. The spider has been tossed out of the window released into its natural habitat but I am rather quite the worse for wear. No longer shaking thank to the person that gifted us a bottle of Shapire blue a couple of years ago which we thought we’d never drink but heart is still thumping like crazy. After it was all over my older kid helpfully pointed out that he also had a, deceased, guest needing eviction. That fucker had better be dead because I was not prepared for a round two.

TheLadyAnneNeville · 20/03/2020 20:44

I’ve a large glass of Malbec and am chuckling to Bridget Jones Diary. I have cried enough for one day.

The person I most want to speak to right now, my mum, died just before Christmas. So, it’s wine...and a happy film for me, OP.

Tomorrow is another day.

Duchessofblandings · 20/03/2020 20:46

I’m feeling much happier after today’s statement. There are still many questions to answer but they have, finally, begun to do the right thing.

Many people are now in the position to follow official advice without facing destitution.

PicsInRed · 20/03/2020 20:47

Drinking is thought to make people more susceptible to illness and is known to deplete vitamins associated with same so I would love a glass of wine at the apocalypse but will abstain.

Wonder if pubs have been closed to reduce drinking and therefore decrease susceptibility to coronavirus and also just the general burden on the health system. Will also help with reducing the burden on police and emergency response services as well as freeing up the A&Es ... which are full to bursting of drunken idots and their victims each weekend.

TheLadyAnneNeville · 20/03/2020 20:48

@Reginabambina...a water spray bottle with water and oils of cloves spray is your friend, going forward. I spray at peak spider season and see neither hide nor hairy legs of ‘em 😉

TheLadyAnneNeville · 20/03/2020 20:50

I reckon it’s to prevent spread and free up police/ambulance NHS services associated with pissed up people fighting and falling over, after hours.

slipperywhensparticus · 20/03/2020 20:51

There is literally nothing we can do now except follow advice stay in our homes and wash our hands

Maybe a drink or two

thepeopleversuswork · 20/03/2020 20:54

Shoot me now but I actually feel considerably safer knowing that people are scared. For two weeks now we've had the government failing to take action and people dicking around because they don't have the self-control to not go and hang out with their friends at a mall/get their nails done/go to a wedding.

We needed to have the shit scared out of us and we needed the government to come down like a ton of bricks. It may still be too late but the penny is now starting to drop. Frankly the more authoritarian the government is now the better, for me.
