I know Coronavirus is scary, the constant media scaremongering hasn’t helped either. But let’s get this into perspective, the majority of us will be fine and whilst those of us who fall into the at risk category are anxious it’s still important to realise that there is still a good chance we can recover from this.
But the food stockpiling, sending your kids to school when you know you shouldn’t (yes I know people have financial obligations but if you are really worried about Coronavirus then surely the health of your kids comes first). The threads on MN are sounding pretty hysterical and we aren’t helping each other instead we are creating group hysteria.

Step away from the phone and just calm down and get some perspective. We can’t control this, just have to keep going.

@WikkiTikkiWoo I completely believe what you’ve said, we were warned this would happen very fast by medics in Italy. I would assume some form of lockdown/closures of everything is coming soon too if you’re right.

@wikkitikkiwoo has the government ordered new ventilators from china? china is sending france a million face masks and other equipment, italy has ordered 5000 ventilators and germany 10000 and so on. Is this happening? Lead in time for a new ventilator is 1 or 2 weeks (depending). There are different grades of ventilator and different costs. The government was talking about uk manufacturers "making" ventilators - why when they order from existing manufacturers who have equipment and existing expertise? How does the whole pfi contracting out thing work in this sort of situation, who is in charge?

you may not be able to answer those questions, online, I realise that. don't say anything you aren't comfortable with.

WikkiTikkiWoo · 20/03/2020 11:49

@inlawsimnotsure I am, as it were, reporting from the coal face, not from media reports.

You are more than welcome to dismiss what I am saying. Feel free to bury your head in the sand and think this isn't really happening.

And no. I haven't panic bought. I don't have the time to panic buy. But, again, if it makes you happier to think I am a panic buying prepper who is making this up, you carry right on.

Alsohuman · 20/03/2020 11:50

How does the whole pfi contracting out thing work in this sort of situation, who is in charge?

Tendering for supplies is nothing to do with PFI and I imagine the concept of tendering got thrown in the bin a couple of weeks ago.

WikkiTikkiWoo · 20/03/2020 11:50

@diminishingmarbles I know nothing about the ordering of ventilator masks. I just know about bed availability.

I do know that we can stockpile millions of ventilator masks, but if we don't have the ventilator ready beds available, they are pointless.

MarshaBradyo · 20/03/2020 11:51

Wikki you are not the first to say it. It’s fairly obvious given numbers.

As you say if people want to feel better by thinking you are making it up fine.

WikkiTikkiWoo · 20/03/2020 11:52

@Bluntness100 As I said to a pp, you are welcome to believe, or not believe, what ever you want if that makes you feel better about the situation we are in.

daisypond · 20/03/2020 11:55

diminishingmarbles
We have missed the boat for ordering ventilators. Germany and the US put their orders in weeks ago. We have ordered, but too late. Also, for obvious reasons, China is having problems manufacturing them for export.

inlawsimnotsure · 20/03/2020 12:00

@WikkiTikkiWoo

I don't doubt the seriousness of this situation, I am not burying my head in the sand. I am very scared and rightly so, I just don't think it's helpful to insight panic onto people who are clearly already anxious.

Anyone can say they are anyone on the internet. I could say I am friends with Carrie Symonds and I can't find nappies anywhere and she is seeing what Boris can do to help. That might be true, who knows?

If you don't have time to panic buy, how on earth do you have time to post on mumsnet?

ShanghaiDiva · 20/03/2020 12:00

@Dongdingdong
Re numbers in China: schools are starting to reopen and I cannot believe that would happen if the situation was not being effectively managed re virus cases.
All grades will go back to school in Xinjiang province on Monday
Yunnan all grades by March 30th
These are just two examples.
Schools have a staggered start with grade 12 going first.
The update from China I receive has 36 new cases for thursday with data from some provinces still pending.

MarshaBradyo · 20/03/2020 12:00

The fact that people are disbelieving Wiki makes me realise that all these oh you lot are scaremongering people are wrong.

MarshaBradyo · 20/03/2020 12:01

Inlaw don’t believe her but don’t do the how do you have time crap.

MarshaBradyo · 20/03/2020 12:02

Or rather not worth listening to.

YouAreTheEggManIAmTheWalrus · 20/03/2020 12:13

There Italian doctors are calling it the apocalypse. Should they get a grip too?

news.sky.com/story/coronavirus-they-call-it-the-apocalypse-inside-italys-hardest-hit-hospital-11960597

ShesGotBetteDavisEyes · 20/03/2020 12:16

I don’t understand the logic ShanghaiDiva isn’t sending the kids back just going to make it all start up again? And they’re still getting new cases?

AngelicaKauffman · 20/03/2020 12:27

The fact that people are disbelieving Wiki makes me realise that all these oh you lot are scaremongering people are wrong

The fact that people will just lap up whatever some random, anonymous stranger says on an online forum is exactly why the scaremongering is so dangerous.

MarshaBradyo · 20/03/2020 12:28

Here you go Angelica from another thread.

...listen to this ICU dr on LBC

youtu.be/tQD4B_hmdvo

Or search Dr Jack on LBC

In Summary

  • beds in his ICU are FULL already
  • health workers are putting their lives on the line for you and some will die
  • in the world wars teenagers lied about their ages and were willing to fight and die
  • you’re being asked to sit on your sofa and at a time when technology makes this is easier than ever
  • no more thanks from the gov to the front line staff- they don’t want thanks-they need you to stay at home, they want to work without being abused by the public, they need equipment and someone where to sit and have a coffee
-if you go to out unnecessarily, you will be killing people
ShanghaiDiva · 20/03/2020 12:28

Most new cases are coming from people bringing it back to China. Therefore there are strict quarantine rules in place to try and prevent this. The provinces that have plans to open eg Xinjiang had low numbers of cases eg 76 in Xinjiang province so the risks of reinfection are lower.
This is now the second phase in China imo. Schools cannot be closed forever and sending kids back whilst controlling the number of new infections is what needs to happen now.
There are also restrictions in opened schools eg compulsory mask wearing, temp checking, distance between pupils and designated routes around the school to avoid crowds and groups.

TheMemoryLingers · 20/03/2020 12:29

The time for 'getting a grip' has passed. We need people to be frightened so they will take precautions. That's not to say we should panic but in my view being scared is the only valid option at the moment.

MarshaBradyo · 20/03/2020 12:29

I copied and pasted that from here

Look and come back

AngelicaKauffman · 20/03/2020 12:32

Here you go Angelica from another thread

That doesn't really have any bearing on what I just said.

I've already said this at least twice but telling people not to scaremonger is not the same as saying 'there is nothing to worry about here'. I'm not disputing any of the actual facts. If you can't see the difference between the two things then there's not much more I can say.

MarshaBradyo · 20/03/2020 12:33

Good. You’ll stop posting helps everyone.

AngelicaKauffman · 20/03/2020 12:38

No, I'll just stop trying to reason with someone who can't understand such a simple concept.

Don't worry, I'll continue warning other people if you or anybody else is scaremongering.

MarshaBradyo · 20/03/2020 12:40

It’s true. If people want to bury their heads fine.
