Why are gyms still open?

Last week I booked two classes at the gym for tomorrow. I really enjoy the classes and want to go. OTOH it doesn't seem wise. Is anyone else still going to the gym? Why are they still open and running classes?

exactly youd think the government would want clear figures on exactly how many people are infected versus how many people have died of the infection
why would they not want that information to be available to everyone so that we can all see exactly what's going on?

Of course they do, funnily enough there aren't 67 million testing kits available for the whole of the UK population right now.

HTH 🙄

David LLoyd emails me to say they have agreed to let customers freeze accounts for as long as they wish? You just need to email them.

What if I'm a nurse, am I allowed to go to the gym to de stress in between shifts?

Poppydaisies · 20/03/2020 10:39

Probably much safer if you went for a run outside instead, especially as you're more likely to be infected (with or without symptoms).

No. The gym is not essential. Your work is. You can go to work but cannot go to the gym.

No of course not. You could potentially spread the virus.

People can work out at home so easily - you just need a mat and some tins, or go outside for a run.

UYScuti · 20/03/2020 11:08

But I am a conscientious health conscious person, I am not vulnerable because I have looked after my health but I'm having to make sacrifices for people who haven't bothered to take care of their own health 🤷🏼‍♀️

MarshaBradyo · 20/03/2020 11:09

UY so you don’t mind if you spread it around and get more patients then?

UYScuti · 20/03/2020 11:17

I'm not ill, no one in the gym is ill, the only people going to the gym now are people who are younger and fit and healthy, who understand the risk and who are wiping down the equipment after use and practicing appropriate social distancing

turkeyontheplate · 20/03/2020 11:18

You're not vulnerable because of an accident of genetics, not because you're a gym bunny. Sanctimonious prat Hmm

MarshaBradyo · 20/03/2020 11:18

You can have CV and be asymptotic and still spread it. Are you really a nurse or was it hypothetical?

notacooldad · 20/03/2020 11:20

@fidgety30 pity this virus doesn’t target stupid. You would be first on its list
If stupidity was a criteria there would be a lot more folk higher up on the list before fidgety to be honest.

UYScuti · 20/03/2020 11:21

Turkeyontheplate hi😊, I do understand your point and I agree that the reasons I am am not vulnerable are partly genetic/inherent but in large part I'm not vulnerable because I take very good care of my health

MarshaBradyo · 20/03/2020 11:22

It’s not about you UY it’s about the people you’ll pass it on to.

CountFosco · 20/03/2020 11:25

My (council run) gym is shut and has suspended memberships until the crisis is over. Unlike my DC's swimming club who have told us to keep paying our monthly fees even though the swimming pools they use are all shut so they are doing no training and no competitions Hmm. Rather pissed off at that, it's a lot of money per month.

turkeyontheplate · 20/03/2020 11:25

Surely you can understand that the people you are being asked to make sacrifices for (quite small sacrifices, really) aren't people who are ill because they're lazy or deserve to be at risk. They include children with cystic fibrosis, people with cancer, diabetes, congenital heart disease. Your post about having to make sacrifices for people who haven't bothered to look after themselves - that was childish and offensive, and it is selfish people like you who are going to get others killed.

LikeDuhWhatever · 20/03/2020 11:27

If gyms close they will have to reimburse their customers for the time during which they are closed. Because if I can’t enter my gym, I want my money back.
