Why are gyms still open?

Last week I booked two classes at the gym for tomorrow. I really enjoy the classes and want to go. OTOH it doesn't seem wise. Is anyone else still going to the gym? Why are they still open and running classes?

Greed.

hambledon · 18/03/2020 22:28

I guess greed is the answer. Trying to kid myself it's healthier to go to the gym than sit at home all day. Which it is. But it's not the socially sensible thing to do.

Virgin allow you to freeze your gym membership Subject to 101 T&Cs but aren’t taking the current circumstances into account, so won’t let DH suspend his until May!

VivaLeBeaver · 18/03/2020 22:30

Money.

I’m a member at David Lloyd. I’m not going. But am still having to pay £120 a month while they’re technically open.

Iamthewombat · 18/03/2020 22:31

See the other thread, replete with people whinging that their fitness routines and ‘anxiety’ are more important than public health, for the answers. Here you go.

DeadBod · 18/03/2020 22:31

My council gym is still open but has cancelled any classes that need equipment. I have stopped going.

RAOK · 18/03/2020 22:32

At David Lloyd you can suspend your membership for 2 months or more and pay 25% of your monthly fee. My gym is pretending it’s staying open to support people’s mental health and wellbeing but it’s pure greed.

TexasTina · 18/03/2020 22:34

My gym is open. Classes have been cancelled and no more than 100 people in. You have to sign in electronically so easy to check numbers and I assume control. It costs £9.99 so neither here nor there. I'm not sure whether I'm going tomorrow. Didn't today. More people there than usual Tuesday.

turkeyontheplate · 18/03/2020 22:35

Because the owners are greedy selfish cunts who won't do the right thing until they're made to.

LochJessMonster · 18/03/2020 22:38

Because for some people it’s their only escape.
And for the business, closing may mean the company going under, staff losing jobs etc

My gym has closed every other machine to keep distancing, reduced class sizes and the receptionists are wearing gloves.

Pipandmum · 18/03/2020 22:43

I'm going tomorrow but only to my trainers studio as I know she has been vigilant about her equipment, and we have agreed we will keep our distance. We will avoid the main gym as I don't know if everyone will clean after use etc.
My son works at a small independent gym and spent today deep cleaning all the equipment. However that's only as good until the next person uses it! Hand sanitisers everywhere. It's not that busy at the moment so easy enough to practise distance. No idea about classes though. My trainer is doing hers (yoga and pilates) online now. If she doesn't work she doesn't get paid as self employed. Doing online classes is win-win for everyone.

Iamthewombat · 18/03/2020 22:56

and the receptionists are wearing gloves.

Phew! All transmission risks eliminated because Maureen on the reception desk is wearing plastic gloves.

Ozziewozzie · 18/03/2020 22:59

God, gym equipment is covered in bacteria in the best of days without corona. I can’t belueve they are still open!

megletthesecond · 18/03/2020 23:00

I'm not sure.
Our local authority gym is still open. Even I skipped bootcamp class this week. Been running and cycling instead.

CuppaZa · 18/03/2020 23:01

Because stupid, selfish, vain twats are still willing to put everyone else at risk? Money?

Namechange170518 · 18/03/2020 23:02

I go to a very small independent gym.

The owner/coach has said he will be staying open until forced to close.

He has put in several safety measures. Including but not limited to:

No more than 10 people per class
No sharing equipment during workouts
All equipment to be cleaned with spray before and after use.
Hand sanitiser EVERYWHERE
Stay away from the gym if you have so much as a sniffle.
We will also be using our large outdoor space as much as possible.

I will certainly feel safter attending my gym sessions than I do using public transport to get to work.

Exercise helps your body produce white blood cells which in turn will help you fight off any illness.

Our coach is updating us daily on the measures that have been implemented.

We are a small community of less than 50 members and I trust each and every one of them to follow the guidelines so we can keep each other safe.

So yes, I will still be going to the gym.

turkeyontheplate · 18/03/2020 23:04

You can exercise at home - all the benefits to your white cell count, none of the risks to yourself and other people from going to the gym.

Honestly, how are people so dim/selfish

hussandchips56 · 18/03/2020 23:05

Mine is still open and to be honest I've never thought it was that clean but nearest to me, so I put up with it, they are still open but I've not gone for the last 4 weeks, to add salt to the wound I got a letter saying my direct debit is going up

Healthierthisyear · 19/03/2020 02:39

A lot of gyms have announced they'll be closing on Thursday night, so it could be that people are going one last time while they still can.

AlexaAmbidextra · 19/03/2020 02:58

Because the owners are greedy selfish cunts who won't do the right thing until they're made to.

That’s unfair. Friends of mine, a married couple opened up a gym just over a year ago. They’ve put everything they had into it and it was just, after huge amounts of hard work and them working every hour God sends, starting to break even. It hasn’t been going long enough for them to have built up any reserves. They are facing losing their home and both finding themselves with no job and no income. So no, I can’t call them greedy selfish cunts.

earsup · 19/03/2020 03:01

My boxing gym now shut and all yoga stopped yesterday.

Deelish75 · 19/03/2020 06:00

My council swimming pool is still open. I did think about going for a swim yesterday, but decided it probably wasn’t wise so didn’t. I don’t know why it was still open but I think it’s giving people a false sense of security - “if it wasn’t alright to go they’d have shut it.” I think as long as these places are still open people will go, the government needs to close things down now properly.

So instead of swimming yesterday I baked a jam sponge pudding. Bit counter productive I know but we are living in strange times.

ParisInTheSpringtime · 19/03/2020 06:10

I go to a small independent gym which only opened a few months ago. We’ve already had an email begging us not to cancel or freeze membership, as they would just go under. No greed there, just survival.

They will be staying open as long as possible, and I will be going as long as they are open.

Iamthewombat · 19/03/2020 07:37

Continuing to pay your fees will keep the gym afloat, yes. Continuing to go to the gym is an entirely separate choice, and a selfish one.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 19/03/2020 07:41

the receptionists are wearing gloves

Thank god. This respiratory disease will stopped in its tracks by glove wearing.

Its because owners dont want their businesses to go under. So until Boris makes it mandatory for everywhere to shut, they'll still be open and selfish people will still go.
