Why are gyms still open?

Last week I booked two classes at the gym for tomorrow. I really enjoy the classes and want to go. OTOH it doesn't seem wise. Is anyone else still going to the gym? Why are they still open and running classes?

Why should gym goers be penalized...people who make the effort to build up their health are doing a good thing for the country

Just thinking about this a bit. Some of the infections have been brought back by people who were overseas on Skiing holidays. People who were fit, younger, healthy enough to just write any symptoms off as a bit of the sniffles, go to work, go to school, travel around with just the odd cough, nothing significant. There's likely to be a significant overlap between People Who Go On Ski Trips and People Who Go To The Gym, not least on the basis of socioeconomic status.

It could well be gym goers who did this in the first place. Which wasn't really a very good thing for the country now, was it?

FWIW, I'm also a massive fan of the cheaper-midrange gyms. But I'm not going, even though I would love to, even now when my chest feels like I've got a 5kg kettle ball balanced on my sternum. And in any case, I have never seen anybody else, I'm not minging clean their arse and back sweat off a machine in 20 years of going to the places; it's hard enough to get them to shower before the pool or steam room.

Because research has shown that younger people are often carriers of the disease and frequently have no symptoms so they are literally walking around infecting people with zero idea. No-one is penalised we are ALL having to make sacrifices for those at risk like your elderly relative or friend with asthma.

20,000 dead in the UK will be a good result, 250-500k dead expected without a lock down.

Worth it huh

I believe this is the article with the graphs showing symptomatic Vs non-symptomatic people.

I now know where all the hand sanitiser and antibacterial sprays are. Some of these threads are really quite shocking. People you can still exercise in your homes or the park or if you have a garden. You are social distancing g to prevent the vulnerable falling ill not for your own sakes ; those in specific groups not withstanding. Nhs premises cannot get hand gel , tissues, anti bac spray etc but it's ok for gyms to use stores of it.

Selmababies · 19/03/2020 15:14

It depends where in the country the gym is based. Where I am there are only 7 infections in the entire county and none in the immediate area. It would seem illogical for gyms in London or other areas where the disease is rife to continue to operate.

Jesus wept! How can you possibly know there are only 7 infections in your entire county? That's 7 confirmed cases wich means nothing really. Could be (probably is) thousands! Assuming you're in the UK, we aren't testing so there's no way of knowing.
This non thinking attitude is rife and is terrifying

Poppydaisies · 19/03/2020 15:21

There are likely more than 20,000 cases in the UK by now!! Most cases are not recorded as they're not tested.

Please can everyone do their bit and stay away from others as much as possible?

Selmababies · 19/03/2020 15:23

Has it not occurred to all you persistant gym users that it's not as simple as just wiping down the gyn equipment ( which probably isn't sufficient anyway)?
What about the airborne risks? Ive read it's possible to linger in the air for hours?
Your actions are mindblowingly stupid and increasing the spread of the virus to yourself and others.
How can you not acknowledge these risks, and if you do, how can you continue to go to your gym. ( i speak as a regular gym user)

WeAllHaveWings · 19/03/2020 15:25

Seriously! It is a whole country shutdown, advised from experts, to protect everyone and the nhs service.

If only there was another way you could get exercise while staying away from the gym.... hmmm like working out at home, running on your own etc

peachypetite · 19/03/2020 15:36

My gym is ignoring me

Poppydaisies · 19/03/2020 15:40

Just read that there are now an estimated 55,000 cases in the UK!!! Shock

Sunflower20 · 19/03/2020 15:53

My local gym has closed. Thank fuck.

I have Bipolar and the gym plays a massive part in keeping me from depressive and manic episodes, but I'm staying away. My 8yr old DD is a gymnast who trains 6 hours a week plus 2 hours dance. Gymnastics and dance are both closed so she is gutted. Instead we are working out together at home and going for 'socially distanced' runs in a nearby field (I hate running!) I will still be paying all the fees to help these businesses. I don't get the mentality of "it's still open so I'll go" it's only open because they can't claim in the insurance until they are ordered to close, which I totally get.

Fidgety31 · 19/03/2020 16:35

I went swimming today and will go to the gym if it’s still open tomorrow.
It’s cleaner than a lot of public places and the other users are further away from me than shoppers in the supermarket !

emmathedilemma · 19/03/2020 16:44

Mine is still open (one off independent place) but I've not been for a week when there was no evidence of any additional cleaning (emails say they are now doing this). They've talked about online or outdoor classes but nothing implemented yet. I'm genuinely shocked at how busy class bookings have been this week. I've paid a year up front through a work scheme so I don't think I have an option to put a freeze on my membership.

Themaraudersmap · 20/03/2020 08:22

@Fidgety31 you are a moron. Here is a nice brightly coloured list to help you understand what you’re supposed to be doing. Note that gym is in the red column of things to AVOID doing so that WE CAN SAVE LIVES and try go back to normal some times in the next 4 months!!! Jesus Christ people wake up. This is serious.

Why are gyms still open?
moveandmove · 20/03/2020 08:23

I'm still going to the gym. It's still full in there when I go.

Bienentrinkwasser · 20/03/2020 08:27

It’s not greed. It’s necessity. DH manages a gym (charity run), before that he worked for one of the big health club providers. There is so little money in the companies that run these places. The rent an maintenance costs on sites is astronomical. Even the high end companies have astronomical debts.

MarshaBradyo · 20/03/2020 08:30

People going read this thread from a nurse at overcapacity today

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/3854344-I-didnt-sign-up-for-this

What you are doing today will exponentially explode what what we will all be seeing in three weeks

And that is stopping non essential activity including the gym

daisypond · 20/03/2020 08:35

@Fidgety31
You should be ashamed of yourself. I despair at the arrogance and stupidity of people.

Fidgety31 · 20/03/2020 09:14

daisypond I’m not ashamed at all
I’m on my way to the gym now for a nice workout .

Themaraudersmap · 20/03/2020 09:42

@fidgety30 pity this virus doesn’t target stupid. You would be first on its list.

Sportbilly · 20/03/2020 09:48

In fairness I was in the gym today and did not go within 2 metres of anybody due to machines being closed to ensure distance between members. Afterwards I popped into Lidl and stood in a queue with perhaps a 100 people and we were literally on top of one another.....as I said before are supermarkets immune to the virus?!
