NHS worker here - Please self isolate.

I'm an NHS worker and today was the absolute worst day of my working life.. Staff and patients are dropping like flies, everyone's confused, stressed out and scared, we don't have the equipment that we need to protect ourselves properly, and it's only going to get worse. We weren't even close to being prepared for the events of the past few days, things have escalated so quickly.

Please self isolate NOW and try to slow down the spread of this virus, we don't have the facilities or staff to contain it. Everyone should be doing their bit to help, even if it is just by staying inside as much as possible.

If the things I've witnessed in the past few days are a sign of things to come, your NHS will buckle under the strain of this. We didn't have a plan..... Stay safe everyone.

Disgraceful that we’ve known about this since December and the NHS is so underprepared. They’ve let you all down in the most negligent manner. Thank you for being there on the front lines. May you stay well and strong in the face of whats to come

endofthelinefinally · 18/03/2020 15:58

I am self isolating, but I haven't managed to get any food shopping today. My local supermarket was practically cleared. DH is venturing out once every couple of days, but today there was no fresh food to buy.
I have ordered my repeat prescription, hope there won't be any problems with that.

Youngatheart00 · 18/03/2020 15:59

Thank you for all you are doing. I can only imagine the scenes and am aghast we are so underprepared to support healthcare staff through this with the proper equipment, safeguards etc.

I had to make a shirt essential trip into central London today for a legal matter. I can assure you that the city of London was like a ghost town, probably 10% or less of normal activity. People are getting the message. I’m just not sure it’s going to be enough.

Ciwirocks · 18/03/2020 15:59

Where about in the uk are you op? I am an nhs worker and things aren’t too bad here yet but we know it’s coming Sad

MonsterMood · 18/03/2020 16:00

We didn't have a plan Sad

I know this only too well.

HairyFloppins · 18/03/2020 16:02

We are all self isolating now apart from my DH who has to go to work to keep essential services running.

We really appreciate the work you are doing.

I spend all day on social media telling people to stay at home.

Sorry people are so selfish OP.

Littlemiss74 · 18/03/2020 16:02

I've been unsure whether to take mine out of school or not as I've been told to work from home & frankly worried how I will get any work done if they're here!
But hearing this I'm going to do it as I have an underlying condition and am permanently anxious waiting for them to close schools.

Thank you for all the work you do, people like you are amazing.

madcatladyforever · 18/03/2020 16:03

People are being incredibly dim, I had someone in today for a routine appointment didn't even need and they tell me happily that they have just got back from Italy.
I've been self isolating for weeks now as I'm NHS too so I don't spread it about outside of work and then people do this.

1happyhippie · 18/03/2020 16:04

Where are you @DollyDaydream70 ?

In my area things haven’t stepped up yet according to family who work in the nhs.

It is a disgrace that you are not protected, I really hope you all manage to stay as safe as possible.

StillbreathingStillhere · 18/03/2020 16:06

Teacher here...... no chance of self isolating while BJ keeps schools open. Parents sending poorly kids in as they need to go to work. The government have been utterly shambolic in how they have handled all of this. I suspect Cummings is driving this train.

lubeybooby · 18/03/2020 16:06

I'm so sorry our government hasn't acted quicker. I'm so sorry people are muppets and keep ignoring advice. It's going to get worse than this, I fear it's already too late to avoid overwhelming ICU even if we completely locked down right now.

Thank you for trying and for everything you and all your colleagues do

thistimeofyear · 18/03/2020 16:06

I don’t think people are selfish. I think we are all trying to cope with this ever changing situation in the best way we know how. I do appreciate your serous message though Op and am doing my best.

winterbear990 · 18/03/2020 16:06

Sorry to ask but when you say dropping like flies do you mean falling ill or passing away? Thank you for all you continue to do, you don't get paid enough to put your lives on the line like this Sad

Lweji · 18/03/2020 16:08

SadFlowers

It's disheartening to read so many callous posts on MN

DollyDaydream70 · 18/03/2020 16:09

@Ciwirocks I'm in the Manchester area.. once it came, it came quick, prepare yourself because it's absolute bedlam in the hospital I work in. I cried when I got home today (I'm not a mard arse by any stretch of the imagination) and my boss was sent home with a stress induced hemiplegic migraine. Four members of our 12 strong team have been put on 14 days self isolation due to members of their families having symptoms, so already those of us still standing are feeling the strain of the extra work.

DollyDaydream70 · 18/03/2020 16:11

@winterbear990 not dying, falling ill. Sorry to have frightened you!

OP posts:
sixeightfour · 18/03/2020 16:11

Not everyone can self isolate. Some of us have to work. The government won't help the self employed

Ciwirocks · 18/03/2020 16:13

I was hoping you would say London! We are north west too, I am having a wine tonight preparing for the worst. Already have an inkling it’s on the way, lots of people I know have got coughs/ sore throats etc.

buttcrackmcheese · 18/03/2020 16:13

What do you do if you know someone who works in a hospital on ALL wards, they have a family at home isolating because of new symptoms and they refuse to join the isolation? And have apparently been told by their direct manager that they'll 'probably be ok' to carry on working.

winterbear990 · 18/03/2020 16:15

Thank you for clarifying Dolly, I'm so sorry you've been put in such an impossible position. I've read the NHS employee thread and I can see how utterly desperate you all feel Sad

Knackeredmommy · 18/03/2020 16:15

Teacher here, I'd love to! 250 pupils were absent today and we sent home about 20 with coughs and temperatures. It's horrible and stressful.

HitsAndMrs · 18/03/2020 16:15

Sorry you're going through this. Is this at SR?
I'm an NHS student, supposed to go out on placement in 5 weeks but no idea if they're going ahead. Is it all hands on deck or will we be a burden..

WrinkledlikeAudrey · 18/03/2020 16:16

Just wanted to say Thank You for your efforts OP and to wish you strength and good health. Flowers Flowers I am self isolating due to my health and keeping my fingers crossed. Sad

DollyDaydream70 · 18/03/2020 16:17

@winter990 where will I find that thread please? The NHS employee one.. I feel like I could do with chatting with other NHS workers.
