NHS worker here - Please self isolate.

I'm an NHS worker and today was the absolute worst day of my working life.. Staff and patients are dropping like flies, everyone's confused, stressed out and scared, we don't have the equipment that we need to protect ourselves properly, and it's only going to get worse. We weren't even close to being prepared for the events of the past few days, things have escalated so quickly.

Please self isolate NOW and try to slow down the spread of this virus, we don't have the facilities or staff to contain it. Everyone should be doing their bit to help, even if it is just by staying inside as much as possible.

If the things I've witnessed in the past few days are a sign of things to come, your NHS will buckle under the strain of this. We didn't have a plan..... Stay safe everyone.

Thank you for working at this time.

I have however been told by 3 people that they have just called in sick so they can have two weeks full pay off and pretend to isolate.

Toddlertown · 18/03/2020 16:39

I’m self isolating OP. Thank you so much for all you’re doing. Anyone not at least attempting to self isolate where possible are inconsiderate arse holes.

DollyDaydream70 · 18/03/2020 16:39

www.gov.uk/government/organisations/public-health-england This is the site that our Infection Control team is taking it's information. This is where you will find out exactly what's going on. Apparently it's only updated once per day and the information is changing daily. I hope this is useful to you all.

@DollyDaydream70 🌷💕. I’m sorry our Government have been SO utterly shit. I disagree with the approach they have taken, but more than that - why were they not getting PPE & ventilators made from January? Why were they not doing SO much more?

China gave us the opportunity to prepare and the fuddled while arome burnt. Fuckung idiots.

Big Thank you to all of you on the front line, or living with them, it’s beyond the call of duty to be in this position!,

healthcare workers being told to come in, even if ill. That’s BEYIND disgraceful, we need to do something about that. Any suggestions?.

Zaphodsotherhead · 18/03/2020 16:41

Supermarket worker here. I can't self isolate because I don't get paid if i don't go to work (no WFH for us!) I'm single and if I don't get paid my bills won't be covered. Until the government can confirm that we will be paid as usual if we isolate, even if we have no symptoms and haven't been in contact (knowingly) with someone with symptoms, I have to keep going in. People continue to want to buy food, my co workers are self isolating if they have partners who can help cover the bills, so those of us who can get in ARE getting in.

MindfullWWer · 18/03/2020 16:41

Op thank you for your hard work looking after us. Teraculum29, I have underlying issues and tried to follow the government's advice this morning, unfortunately, M&S did not accept the governments stance to self Isolate, as it was "only advice", I did quote the government website info for Employers, but it fell on deaf ears. I stayed off and it was reluctantly agreed as unpaid leave "on this occasion". I am so upset, because the vulnerable taking up beds unnecessarily due to their focus on cash may impact much younger people. I have never taken a sick day in over two years of working there! Tough times folks. Stay safe.

Snuggleworm · 18/03/2020 16:42

I still cannot understand why your prime minister has not closed schools. Here in Ireland, all schools, creches, pubs etc have been closed and we are basically on or near lock down. Most people are being sensible about it and keeping their kids in and practising socil distancing.
Also to have allowed Cheltenham and concerts to go ahead is absolute craziness. No wonder people are relaxed about it though. If your prime minister is not showing any signs of how serious it actually is.
Look at what Italy are going though right now and UK are well behind.

ChristmasCarcass · 18/03/2020 16:43

buttcrackmcheese our trust is saying the same - I have been told there is different NHSE advice specifically for staff, although I can’t find it anywhere.

We still have about 25% of the department off, even so. Lots of cases on the wards.

And a stroppy all-staff email telling us off for swabbing too many inpatients last week Hmm

roses2 · 18/03/2020 16:45

I'm in London. This morning my local bakery was as busy as usual :(

Family member has been told to attend work even if they have family living with them showing symptoms.

Babyroobs · 18/03/2020 16:51

It's shocking. I had to plead with my employers to pull us out of an NHS setting as we were not an essential service. I cannot believe the schools are still not closed. I don't trust this government in this crisis. Thank you for all you are doing NHS staff.

KisstheTeapot14 · 18/03/2020 16:52

Sorry to hear that @DollyDaydream70.

Thank you for your work.

Our family has gone into isolation/strict social distance as of next few days. Have taken DS out of school. We need to keep the hospital beds clear for inevitable cases of very poorly people.

Just need to locate a few packs of paracetamol for the 3 of us just in case.

diddl · 18/03/2020 16:53

I'm not sure it's that people have a death wish-more that they are between a rock & a hard place.

I know people are doing the right thing by self isolating, but I wonder how many will have done so unnecessarily & put added strain onto co workers?

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 18/03/2020 16:53

@DollyDaydream70 - thank you for your work.

corythatwas · 18/03/2020 16:56

OP, THANK YOU for looking after us. Glad to say both dh's office and my uni have moved to working at home and will be for the foreseeable. We will be going out as little as possible. Obviously not everybody can do that, but everybody who can and does is one less person to carry infection.

ScreamingLadySutch · 18/03/2020 16:58

Can we try not to use the euphemism 'passing away'?

People die. Spraying a sad thing with verbal perfume doesn't change its reality.

HitsAndMrs · 18/03/2020 16:59

Madcatladyforever - I thought that may be the case. I'm physio but they're being pulled to respiratory so educators aren't available.

GabsAlot · 18/03/2020 17:08

My dsis has been told to go in after 7 days if isolation she said the guidline is 14 the said we're short staffed this is in private -the doctos atm seem to be thrilled with patients coming in as they get paid per patient

Lumene · 18/03/2020 17:09

Thank you for all you do OP.

Lifeisabeach09 · 18/03/2020 17:09

@DollyDaydream70,

Can you tell us what you are seeing? Are people coming in seriously ill or with illness that can be managed at home?

Lumene · 18/03/2020 17:10

Family member has been told to attend work even if they have family living with them showing symptoms.

Are they in a Union? These companies should be named and shamed.

Meercat2 · 18/03/2020 17:14

postergeekchicz I agree with you about people's behaviour this coming days! I'm nhs front line too.
I was close to tears yesterday coming back from work. This isn't just about you. This is about how we all behave in order to prevent this from being a catastrophic situation.

LapsedVeganAcademic · 18/03/2020 17:15

@DollyDaydream70 Thank you for all you're doing. I'm self-isolating, and my DH and children are with me.

theflushedzebra · 18/03/2020 17:16

OP and all our frontline workers, teachers, shop workers - all of you are heroes Thanks

I just can't believe this is happening.
