NHS worker here - Please self isolate.

I'm an NHS worker and today was the absolute worst day of my working life.. Staff and patients are dropping like flies, everyone's confused, stressed out and scared, we don't have the equipment that we need to protect ourselves properly, and it's only going to get worse. We weren't even close to being prepared for the events of the past few days, things have escalated so quickly.

Please self isolate NOW and try to slow down the spread of this virus, we don't have the facilities or staff to contain it. Everyone should be doing their bit to help, even if it is just by staying inside as much as possible.

If the things I've witnessed in the past few days are a sign of things to come, your NHS will buckle under the strain of this. We didn't have a plan..... Stay safe everyone.

I think even my elderly Mum has accepted she's not going to see anyone for days on end. I knew I couldn't see her for Mothers Day, but today told her I didn't feel I should put her at risk (as both of my jobs have high contact with others). How she'll feel this time next week, I don't know.

OP, just wanted to say thank you so much for all the hard work you've got in front of you. Your work is so important, but at the same time you have to look after yourself.

WayTooBloodyTired · 18/03/2020 16:22

Support worker in Manchester here. Many of us have underlying health conditions and are caring for symptomatic people with only gloves and antibac spray for protection. We are so understaffed and everyone is going down with the ship. I'm scared and tired after 30+ hour shifts with people as or more vulnerable than myself. Nothing compared to nursing but I'll be taking this home to my elderly family members. I am prepared for the worst outcome. If you can stay home please do.

teraculum29 · 18/03/2020 16:22

I don't know what is wrong with people.
Do they have death wish? or are that plain stupid??Do they not understand to avoid crowds?Space distancing etc??
pubs, shops, are full of people where I live

TwentyViginti · 18/03/2020 16:24

THANK YOU, Dolly. Just thank you. All of you Flowers

Lifeisabeach09 · 18/03/2020 16:24

Four members of our 12 strong team have been put on 14 days self isolation due to members of their families having symptoms

There are mixed messages being sent out amongst the Trusts and in the private hc sector. I work in healthcare and have been told I am to come into work regardless of any household member showing symptoms.

Mrsmadevans · 18/03/2020 16:24

Big hike in the total deaths just released now another 32 taking it to 104 Sad

Orangecake123 · 18/03/2020 16:24

@YouAreTheEggManIAmTheWalrus

The NHS has also been chronically underfunded for the past 10 years years.

At my teaching hospitals one of the largest department only has 52 beds.

alloutoffucks · 18/03/2020 16:27

@teraculum29 Shops makes sense. You can't get slots for online delivery and you can't buy enough stuff usually for more than a few days as shelves are so empty. That is why I am in the shops.

ManlyMenAreWe · 18/03/2020 16:27

@mrsmadevans where are you getting that from please? The PHE is still showing figures from yesterday 9am

Onemorehitandillcrumble · 18/03/2020 16:29

Not everyone can self isolate. Some of us have to work. The government won't help the self employed

So you will just go out and infect & possibly kill people? Or are you confusing social distancing & self isolation?

What do you do if you know someone who works in a hospital on ALL wards, they have a family at home isolating because of new symptoms and they refuse to join the isolation?

JFC-contact someone and report. Is this any good?

Michelleoftheresistance · 18/03/2020 16:29

Waytoobloodytired that's absolute heroism. I'm so sorry you and your staff are stuck in this position.

Mrsmadevans · 18/03/2020 16:30

According to the DOH in the Metro paper, they would hardly lie about this .

@YouAreTheEggManIAmTheWalrus We have only known about this since January because the Chinese authorities were covering it up and pretending it wasn't a problem. Even when it was deadly serious the international community failed to act appropriately - hoping that quarantining Wuhan would be enough so that their precious supply chains with the rest of China would not be disrupted. It was clear that Chinese New Year and then Half Term were going to cause this to become a pandemic, but world leaders turned a blind eye or paid lip service to doing something.

It was only when Italy (which had its first confirmed case only 24 hours before our first case) suddenly found itself in the most appalling situation that the world sat up and took notice. For some reason an appalling situation in Wuhan didn't have the same impact. Italy was just unlucky. It could just as easily have been us.

The failure is not a failure to prepare. I don't think anyone could have anticipated a global pandemic of something so infectious that would require so many respirators. The failure has been in not containing it in China.

ProfessorPootle · 18/03/2020 16:31

My sister works in a hospital in sw London, officially there is 1 confirmed case in the borough. It’s not true. There are 8 in ITU itself plus 300 other confirmed positives sent home to self isolate. My sister works in maternity, she has to go into work despite her dc and dh self isolating at home with symptoms, she has to keep going unless she herself has symptoms as they are so incredibly understaffed. The hospital she works in has 12 ventilators, the planning documents say they need 256.

madcatladyforever · 18/03/2020 16:32

Sorry you're going through this. Is this at SR?
I'm an NHS student, supposed to go out on placement in 5 weeks but no idea if they're going ahead. Is it all hands on deck or will we be a burden..

All of our student placements have been cancelled in this trust.

geekchicz · 18/03/2020 16:33

I’ve posted this on another thread but I’m posting here too..
To be blunt - how you and I spend this weekend ( and thereafter ) and who with -will affect ICU capacity the next 3 months.

It’s a numbers game . Limit social contact as much as possible to stop the curve shooting up . You may not catch it ( although likely you will and be asymptomatic , according to current guidelines dated 16.03.20 in the UK )but you might need urgent medical attention in the 3 next months for a different reason other than COVID 19 so everyone needs to think on and get their heads round this .

Toddlerteaplease · 18/03/2020 16:34

We are really quiet. As most elective surgery cancelled, though there are still some going ahead tomorrow.

FuzzyPuffling · 18/03/2020 16:35

I'd like to add my thanks and admiration for all the NHS staff dealing with this.

DH and I have been self isolating for the past 8 days (risk group, not illness) but DH had to venture out today for food (online shop attempted yesterday but no delivery slots available for 3 weeks). It's very unnerving.

We live in a touristy part of the country and I have been horrified by the number of FB posts saying "We are booked to come on holiday in the next week/two weeks. Shall we come?" We have very poor infrastructure here and access to health services is difficult at the best of times. The supermarkets are empty, the bars and restaurants are closed and we cannot cope with an influx of visitors and their "holiday expectations". Someone on FB said " Well, if we've got to be isolating we'd rather be in "our area", because you've got lots of space". I despair.

Please everyone, (including your children when the schools close) stay at home.

Here you go lovely. I'm sorry I don't know how to make clicky links on MN! The thread was very eye opening for sure

adaline · 18/03/2020 16:35

Yep, people are selfish. Every single thread on here has someone who thinks the rules don't apply to them Hmm
