I’m sorry if this is an odd question but I’ve a cottage booked for a week in South Devon in June- I was really looking forward to it! With things the way they are do you think it will be safe to go by then? Thank you

Gorse not really . Much goes on anyway, as we are such a small group of tiny communities. No privacy at all but good knowledge of all people locally. Affluent second home owners bring employment and wealth - from local lad who ‘isn’t academic’ doing all right by providing log service to farmhands wives caretaking or retired farmhands earning a bit extra by doing odd jobs like gutter clearing, pool management and security.

It’s just stepped up a bit with most vulnerable. The greatest risk now villages are virtually cut off is elderly people going hungry, suffering worsening mental health or falling and not being found. Their families can’t visit easily now so they need more local support and oversight.

@SarahInAccounts That's what we'll do, if the weather ever cheers up. But the thought of staying in someone else's property for days on end (because it has been pretty miserable here and what else are you going to do when it's raining?). I hate to sound all Howard Hughes, but how do you know that it's been cleaned properly and whoever stayed there before you didn't have it?

Don't go OP. The danger is the locals driving you out with pitchforks.

I can promise you, OP. There will be restaurants welcoming you with open arms. But don't kid yourself. They've had 3 cases at my GP surgery alone, and that was weeks ago now. I don't shop locally, and I wouldn't eat out.
