Is a UK cottage holiday safe?

I’m sorry if this is an odd question but I’ve a cottage booked for a week in South Devon in June- I was really looking forward to it! With things the way they are do you think it will be safe to go by then? Thank you

I doubt it....

OrangeSamphire · 18/03/2020 15:19

No.

Hospitals down here in the south west are typically massively overstretched and under resourced all year round. We are among some of the least able of the health systems around the UK to cope with this.

Please don't come. Sorry.

SirVixofVixHall · 18/03/2020 15:21

Of course it isn’t safe ! Going to a rural holiday cottage risks spreading the virus to a very vulnerable rural area. That is what NO NON ESSENTIAL TRAVEL means.
Also not safe for you, as rural healthcare is dire, and communities older, so if you needed to be hospitalised for anything at all, you would be in an overcrowded, barely functioning hospital.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 18/03/2020 15:21

In June?! Yes I’d still plan to go- will the virus be gone, no! I think it will have calmed and you will still be under the same nhs care.

LangClegsInSpace · 18/03/2020 15:21

Safe for you or for South Devon?

Zampa · 18/03/2020 15:22

China was in lockdown for about 4 months and they're slowly coming out now. Never say never and see what the situation is like in 12 weeks' time. If it's still like this, there won't be much point going.

confused202 · 18/03/2020 15:26

Thank you all for your replies. I think it probably is looking like a no though! I of course realise the hospitals are overstretched there but had thought that self catering would be the safest option

How about end of July? We are going to a little cottage in Wales end of July. Should we cancel?

user1497207191 · 18/03/2020 15:29

No, that's unnecessary travel. The fewer people travelling around, the better, so that it won't spread so far so quickly.

MarieQueenofScots · 18/03/2020 15:31

We have a holiday cottage booked for the end of August. Not thinking about cancelling yet, although will of course if the advice remains the same nearer the time.

IAmcuriousyellow · 18/03/2020 15:32

If you go away in order to just walk, eat all meals at the cottage, are confident it’s been thoroughly disinfected, then why not. I know we are all managing staff the moment but in a few months we will all be climbing the walls.

IAmcuriousyellow · 18/03/2020 15:33

*AT the moment

SilverySurfer · 18/03/2020 15:35

Seriously?

MissBPotter · 18/03/2020 15:35

I’ve got one booked for the Lake District in early April and the holiday company is refusing to offer refunds for cancellation at the moment. It is saying we can rebook for up to 12 months but I don’t really fancy that as who knows how long this will last?!? I think the holiday companies should be offering refunds but I get that it could cause them to go bust so it is not simple.

confused202 · 18/03/2020 15:37

@IAmcuriousyellow this is what I’m thinking. But at the same time I don’t want to be a risk to the people who live in the village! I definitely wouldn’t eat out as my very young dd has food allergies (hence why we go self catering).

May not work out so well if previous occupiers of the cottage have Coronavirus

OrangeSamphire · 18/03/2020 15:40

It may not seem much impact if one family who plans to self cater and be outdoors travels to south Devon.

But one of the mini outbreaks in Cornwall started just like that. Second homers came to Polzeath, they had no idea they had COVID19 at the time, then they got ill. And spread it.

CarolineIngalls · 18/03/2020 15:40

No. I live in a tourist area, and because so many houses are taxed as second homes our services are underfunded.

Stay away. Stay in the place where you pay taxes.

WE DO NOT WANT YOU HERE. STAY AWAY.

HarrietOh · 18/03/2020 15:40

I’m going to one this weekend, it’s in the middle of nowhere, not in a village etc. Taking my own cleaning products and food, and will go out for walks.

Rocketmam · 18/03/2020 15:40

I was fantasizing about hiring a cottage in the middle of nowhere, taking all our own supplies and only leaving it for walks in the forest or in the large garden etc.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 18/03/2020 15:42

If you go to the cottage, clean and take own sheets and towels. Don’t eat out and bring food with you, I doubt there’s an issue.

Balkinfly · 18/03/2020 15:42

Ridiculous idea sorry.

homemadecommunistrussia · 18/03/2020 15:42

Ok says June though not next week! No way of knowing what the situation will be then.
I wouldn't cancel yet.
