To think mumsnet is making more fuss of corona than anywhere else on the Internet, or in general society

Just that! Until I checked mumsnet I realised we had a serious situation on our hands, and that hand washing is essential, and isolating if you have symptoms. And that was that, carried on as normal. But coming on here, and it's people convinced they are going to die because they've got asthma, people refusing to go into work (even though they don't have any symptoms), people planning for the end of the world. I'm sorry, but this just doesn't reflect the rest of the world. I was at my friend's last night, and apart from mentioning her partner needs to be careful because he's got cancer, it wasn't mentioned. Same when I went shopping. On here it's sounds like the world is ending. Aibu??

RedToothBrush · 17/03/2020 20:41

do u think I'm saying its not a big deal?

Yes because you've completely ignored and/or failed to understand what the Prime minister said.

Perhaps you should pay more attention to the news, the government advice and why they think the advice is so important that its shutting down entire industries putting thousands of peoples lives, job and homes at risk.

Try to keep up with the rest of the planet.

FreshFancyFrogglette · 17/03/2020 20:42

@theflushedzebra you see the difference between that, and claiming that life will never be the same again? That no one will think of children? That all old people, and people with asthma will die? That there are so many things that will never be achieved now?

It's the way people approach it on mumsnet that has surprised me. Not the gravity of it.

I am following government advice, I'm not "an idiot" as some people have branded me, or "the devil" /"devil's advocate". I am quite put out that people have turned on me in a personal way just for noting the difference in attitude between the doomsday mentality of mumsnet, and the wider world.

OP posts:
ElspethFlashman · 17/03/2020 20:47

Well you don't seem to have actually read the advice tbh. It seems to be all news to you.

theflushedzebra · 17/03/2020 20:47

You're not following govt advice! You've just said so. You were in the bookies.

Life will never be the same for some people. Nobody's said ALL old people etc will die - but our own PM has said many will. Stop downplaying this, and stay home.

TheCanterburyWhales · 17/03/2020 20:49

Has your zero hours job not been affected (yet)?
(Repeat question)

PestyMachtubernahme · 17/03/2020 20:51

Survival rate for flu is 99.9%

Cyllie33 · 17/03/2020 20:51

I am following government advice

No, OP, you are not. I and others on this thread have courteously pointed it out - I’ve posted the link to advice up thread - but you still don’t recognise it. And that is what is worrying.

YgritteSnow · 17/03/2020 21:08

I confess I was worried about this - that MN and social media were ramping me up to "act now!" when it wasn't really necessary. Until my dd told me that only half her class were in school today and a special assembly was called to reassure those who were there because there were so few in the school. Today was her last day after I heard that.

Inkpaperstars · 17/03/2020 21:11

I didn't mean out and about in the sense of taking your dd to school, as I expect you know. Yes, there is a contradiction there with social distancing being advised as schools remain open. Either the govt are getting it wrong keeping them open or they are just doing a difficult balancing act. It doesn't mean that going to school is not a problem, and it's all the more reason not to do anything else. To be honest several schools seem to be closing or partially closing now due to staff shortages. I expect them all to follow under govt guidance soon. It was mentioned in the press conference today that plans are being put in place to help those entitled to free school meals.

DishingOutDone · 17/03/2020 21:20

past 9pm and the OP is still saying people die all the time it aint a big deal wasdamaddawidya.

OP is DEFINITELY the woman I met yesterday who actually said to me "people die all the time". Thats the basis of their argument. I mean people trip over slippers and die, you know you can google that, but we are not banning slippers. Political correctness gone mad.

DishingOutDone · 17/03/2020 21:21

OP have you thought of taking it up a level and telling us we only live once, cheer up it might never happen - that sort of thing?

FreshFancyFrogglette · 17/03/2020 21:35

@dishinfoutdone, that's not what I'm saying. There is a middle ground between "we're all going to die" and "life is fantastic", I think I'm firmly in the middle of that ground. Whilst many posters here are in the doomsday sphere, ready to clobber someone for the last hand sanitiser.

The dementia cafe less than 2 mins from me, which is volunteer run, remains open, with pleas to volunteers to continue coming into work until advised otherwise. This is a dementia cafe, which caters for the elderly population, still open and running and supporting volunteers and workers with the backing of the local authority. My dds school remains open, the advice is that she should be there. I am following the advice. Many people on this thread, taking their kids out of schools early, are not following the advice. Yet I'm being penalised for not following it, whilst they are being rational?

OP posts:
FreshFancyFrogglette · 17/03/2020 21:44

@theflushedzebra the advice never once said don't go to the bookies. I wasn't ingesting anything there.

OP posts:
turdtimelucky · 17/03/2020 21:45

I honestly can't tolerate you anymore.

YgritteSnow · 17/03/2020 21:45

I've spoken to a teacher today. He thinks that it's best to take your children out if you can. He says soon the staffing levels will be too low for them to be teaching effectively anyway plus fear and disruption is causing dreadful behaviour from the students.

IndecentFeminist · 17/03/2020 21:45

Of course, you are are the lone voice of reason and sanity.

FreshFancyFrogglette · 17/03/2020 21:46

And I fail to see why that's not allowed, but the dementia cafe is still OK?

OP posts:
FreshFancyFrogglette · 17/03/2020 21:47

@IndecentFeminist no there have been others on this thread agreeing, and many more in the wider world. Very few people are isolating yet, rightly or wrongly. As evidenced by the dementia cafe still being up and running, the hairdressers still operating, the schools still being open, the electrician popping in today. Etc

OP posts:
FreshFancyFrogglette · 17/03/2020 21:49

I don't know why mumsnet removed the poll, because I did set it up. I can't see it.

OP posts:
Cyllie33 · 17/03/2020 21:50

I give up. The OP won’t even read the advice, let alone attempt to adhere to it.

It’s really deeply worrying some people care so little for wider society.

FreshFancyFrogglette · 17/03/2020 21:51

For people wanting me to be walking around like an idiot spitting and swapping bodily fluids about, that's just not true. But I don't see the point in being hysterical. We need to be calm, and weather it.

OP posts:
turdtimelucky · 17/03/2020 21:51

You're in the UK. Things are very different outside of the UK.
Boris indicated he would be ramping up the changes in the coming days - take that to include your bookies and pub.
Can you not get it into your head that these are extraordinary times?
Did we ask for it? No
Did we see it coming? Did we fuck!
Does it mean that we have to change? Yes.

Cyllie33 · 17/03/2020 21:53

If you’re struggling to read and get your head around what’s written on the govt and NHS pages this is quite a helpful summary www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-51917562

turdtimelucky · 17/03/2020 21:53

For people wanting me to be walking around like an idiot spitting and swapping bodily fluids about

Please just don't do that shit in public.

CoolCarrie · 17/03/2020 21:56

I totally agree with you op, people on here are acting like it’s the Spanish flu again and people are dropping down dead in the street, any one who dares to go out is treated like Typhoid Mary!
