For fuck sake. My whole ocado shop for today has been cancelled. Generally speaking it's tricky for us to get to the shops but by some rare stroke of luck my partner had to bring the car home this weekend (usually kept at his parents many miles away). Thankfully we'll be able to drive to the shops but what about those who can't? People in self isolation or those who have to rely on online shops for other reasons? Slots aren't available until next week, midweek at the earliest!

I've been telling myself to stay calm, only buy what we need, don't add to the problem of shops being out of stock. But now I'm panicking it's really hard to stick to that. I'm now not sure if I'll be able to hold back from panic buying now. We have barely any food in the house and usually we only get enough to last us a week but I think I'll have to stock up on two weeks worth now. We might end up not even being able to get anything today due to shelves being bare.

I wonder if all of the people who have decided to stay at home today and keep their children off school are those complaining that the online grocery staff (pickers, delivery people etc) have done the same?

And in a few days when lorry drivers and factory worked have done the same and that possibly causes supply issues? Or there is no transport to get people to work.

Lochroy · 16/03/2020 10:52

@ConferencePear Of course I don't. I'm trying not to derail the thread entirely off topic, and I'm sorry you're in this situation, but if you need to self isolate then that's what you need to do. This is where the whole situation falls apart - we're told not to stock up, then to self isolate, and then can't get a delivery. So wtf are we supposed to do?

Ontheboardwalk · 16/03/2020 10:53

Ocado are prioritising existing customer deliveries above new customers

My Ocado order was also cancelled this morning. I had an early morning slot and the driver called me to tell me that they were running several hours late. He called me back about an hour and a half later to tell me that they wouldn't be able to do the delivery at all.

I don't think it's due to not having stock but probably something going wrong mechanically in the warehouse.

I have now just received the standard email that others have received.

The Ocado app is not working but the website is. You get put into a virtual queue and once you get through the website works just fine. As opposed to last week when it was frustratingly slow (I imagine due to the server being overloaded with shoppers).

RhinestoneCowgirl · 16/03/2020 11:00

I shop with Ocado every week, usually have a Friday delivery. I couldn't get a slot last Friday when I went to book last Monday, so have one for this Friday instead. Now worrying that this won't arrive.

I don't have a car and there's a limit to what I can bring home in my bike panniers. I'm using my high street more at the moment to keep topped up (family of four)

Rainbunny · 16/03/2020 11:01

I hope things get up and running soon. We rely on online food groceries delivery as I work from home and my DH cycles to his office (so haven't had any need to own a car in the last couple of years). I have a delivery scheduled for Wednesday morning with Waitrose who we always use but I just checked and the Waitrose website is currently down.

As someone who has not stockpiled loo roll at all and (we're almost on our last roll) I'm getting really concerned! My last week's food delivery was missing loo roll because people had bought it all up so I'm assuming it will be the same this week.

Also, for that matter why are supermarkets still allowing people to bulk buy things like loo roll? Can't they impose a limit on how much each individual can buy so that more of us can at least get some? Asking people not to be selfish is sadly bloody useless!

souldivachakkakahn · 16/03/2020 11:01

@MummyPop00

"Think companies should prioritise long term customers who pay yearly upfront (like us). Been with Asda paying this way for the last 3 years.

Pissed off that I’m fighting for slots with Johnny come lately all of a sudden & will be emailing them to say so. One typical weekly shop, that’s all I need, I’m not asking a lot and ordering 300x dried pasta every other day like all the loons"

My mum is over 70, and going to the supermarket is a really important activity for her. To do so, she needs to get the bus. I live a long way away from her.
So, once she's been told to stay home to, you know, reduce the risk of her actually dying, how is she supposed to get food? Your attitude is appalling.

Soontobe60 · 16/03/2020 11:01

I have just booked a slot for click and collect with Tesco for next Tuesday. No delivery slots available though.

ConferencePear · 16/03/2020 11:02

Lochroy - I shall have to find another way to deal with my situation which I'm pretty sure I will be able to do. I don't blame the government though. I blame all the selfish idiots who, in spite of reassurances went out and bought huge amounts of stuff, some of which I suspect was for resale on Ebay or such like instead of behaving like responsible citizens.

Mlou32 · 16/03/2020 11:03

They are perhaps out of a large majority of your order through selfish people panic buying. No point delivering a handful of items.

Scruffyoak · 16/03/2020 11:03

I have tesco booked to deliver to my nana tomorrow. I'm 4 hrs away so an 8hr trip to deliver food is hard. I guess I would have too if it gets cancelled. Some items were subbed but all rest looks OK. Fingers crossed x

RosesandIris · 16/03/2020 11:04

A lot of elderly people can't use the internet anyway. It's beyond a joke. Many don't drive any longer either.

Lynda07 · 16/03/2020 11:06

I'm having a delivery later today and a few items are cancelled with no substitutes.

Jobseeker19 · 16/03/2020 11:06

Amazon prime now app are doing next day delivery for groceries. I got antibacterial wipes, noodles, milk etc.

Baaaahhhhh · 16/03/2020 11:09

Some of this must be regional. I was updating my Waitrose order this morning, and there are lots of slots available a few days out. I am (hopefully) expecting my delivery on Wednesday, and I didn't have any problem updating my order this morning, I did it at 7.30am though.

I also cancelled an Ocado order I had in reserve. So that's now free for someone else.

In Italy our elderly relatives are still able to phone in to their local supermarket, and a "boy" on a bike delivers daily. Wouldn't it be lovely to still have that sort of service, and the sort of restraint to only buy for a few days.

Fingers crossed for everyone waiting for an order.

FloconDeNeige · 16/03/2020 11:09

Online shop in Switzerland, next available delivery slot; 5th April!

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 16/03/2020 11:10

I can't even place an order. It's really annoying, I was going to place one for my nan who is self isolating and won't be able to go to the shops due to poor mobility (my parents and I can't visit her because we may have been exposed to it by my sister and my son).

SlippedRoofTile · 16/03/2020 11:12

I've just waited for 15 minutes in the Ocado queue to find I can't log in and I get an error code 879-640

CrowleysBentley · 16/03/2020 11:12

There are probably delivery drivers off sick and self isolating, like you are supposed to if you have any symptoms. If they are short on drivers, they won't manage to get out all of the deliveries.

lentenwonder · 16/03/2020 11:12

It needs rationalising doesn’t it - self-isolated, elderly, immune compromised should have online slots and others should be told to go to the shops.

It is mad - we’re self isolating as all sick with something, my online order last night contained zero fresh fruit and veg.

dinosaurrisotto · 16/03/2020 11:12

I've just had my delivery. The delivery driver said that he normally does 20-something drops in his van but has only been able to do 14 today because everyone are placing such large orders. They can't physically fit it all in the vans. So i expect once pickers start getting through the orders they realise they can't fulfil them all, hence last minute cancellations.

BerryCatHolly · 16/03/2020 11:13

I've read that online supermarket shopping is just 7% of the market so it is not equipped to deal with the uptake in demand.

We are going to see tough choices in the coming days and weeks. Elderly and vulnerable people are going to be asked to isolate. They should be the priority for online supermarket shopping in my opinion in these exceptional circumstances.

Younger people and those in good health should go to the supermarket in person. We need to avoid panic buying and just make sensible decisions about what we buy and in what quantities. We know from countries in lock down like Italy that people are still allowed to get shopping so there is no need to hoard supplies.

AtAt123 · 16/03/2020 11:14

Ice land are still delivering, but they have shortages too. I just did my normal shop and quite a lot of things were unavailable. Will try attach the pages that short what they didn't have and what they did. Luckily I have a very well stocked larder due to being ill so often so am well prepared and can cope without the items.

@littlepeaegg go to the website. App is crashing, website has the slots showing. Strange

Lordfrontpaw · 16/03/2020 11:15

I tried to set up a good delivery for my MIL. The earliest of all the ones near us was Tesco - a week next Saturday!
