AIBU to be pissed at the UK government?

I'm Irish, live in Ireland. We CURRENTLY have had 2 deaths from Covid19 and our government have effectively closed down the country to help slow the spread of the virus. Our schools, universities, child care services, pubs and many many clothes and no essential shops are closed. We are practicing social distancing (staying 1-2m from other people). No visiting our parents, grandparents, friends or neighbours. We are staying in our own very small family cells (those people who we share a house with). We are scrubbing our hands and faces after being outside, disinfecting door handles and shopping trolley. We are really trying to save our country and it's people and not make the mistakes Italy have made. We even cancelled mass, weddings, confirmation, christening s!!!!

It is so so so annoying to watch our nearest neighbours proceed as normal... School open. Cheltenham races open... Football matches being played... Concerts going ahead!!! Crazy!!! Look at Italy!!! 1000's dead!!! The healthcare staff have to choose who to safe! If it is between a 53yr old and a 47yr old, they many old save one! In italy people died alone and medical staff had to find phones/iPads so that they could say goodbye to their families! They are then cremated!!!!
Do not let this happen in the UK. It is boggling that the UK government is putting not just it's people at risk but also my country as we share a border!
Tell me this is madness??? Why are the UK government getting away with this and it's people letting them????

It is extremely worrying but the government keep insisting they are looking at the "science" and don't want to put those measures in place too soon. I'm in the UK and I am worried.

SpoonBlender · 16/03/2020 00:01

Dominic Cummings isn't looking at the science, he's looking at the economy. That's why the schools are enforced to be open. He's a psychopath.

Freddiefox · 16/03/2020 00:01

I think it’s a trust issue, if I felt the government had mine and everyone’s best interests at heart I think I would be ok with it. But they have a shocking track record of me myself and I

Freddiefox · 16/03/2020 00:03

If I didn’t need to work I wouldn’t let my children go to school. I think they are more worried about their stocks and shares than the health of the majority of England. If they cared about the everyday people we wouldn’t have food banks

Ladynada39 · 16/03/2020 00:14

Most other countries in Europe have put it these sanctions.... I do get how the UK government thinks it is above this! Norway is closing it's airports to all no domistic flights! A leading public health doctor stated that there is "no such thing as scaremongering when it comes to this virus". It is a train coming straight for us at full speed!

YABU!

Ladynada39 · 16/03/2020 00:17

The 'science' is simple multiplication! One person gets it, gives it to 3people, they all give it to 3 people and so on!

Just be thankful you live in Ireland, I wish I did.

MyDcAreMarvel · 16/03/2020 00:19

Op the UK wants people to get corona virus - that’s the government’s plan.

RaspberryBubblegum · 16/03/2020 00:19

The current government care only about their money, not their people. But it's what we voted for sadly. I'm not surprised.

Newtothis2017 · 16/03/2020 00:22

I completely agree op. What is extremely worrying is on an island we have 2 very different approaches from 2 different governments. All the talk is of lockdown in the next few days. I will do all I can to keep my kids and family safe. I am "staying at home"

ilovesooty · 16/03/2020 00:24

What football matches?

PikachuAndMe · 16/03/2020 00:54

Supposedly Ireland is two weeks behind Italy and the UK is four weeks. I reckons the UK will shut schools in a week or so which would tie into the Easter holidays so the economic impact is reduced.

GoatyGoatyMingeMinge · 16/03/2020 01:17

Yahboo

a) Pissed means drunk

b) Close your borders. Even without the idiocy of brexit, public health is not an EU competency. The EAA Directive on free movement allows member states to impose immigration controls for infection control.

DruryLanePenance · 16/03/2020 06:38

@spoonblender exactly. Dominic Cummings is a truly evil and dangerous man. Not going to sugar coat it. And the fact half of the country voted for Boris (and the crooks steering it) and actually believe the Tories have their best interests at heart within their agenda of hate just goes to show how utterly ignorant society has become. And it's like the axe telling the trees, "but look at my handle, I'm one of you!". Etonians have always been taught that their role in life is to rule over others. There is no decency or moral within that frame. I do feel appreciative to have what I want and need, but I will also give to those in need, and I genuinely care about having a fair society (especially one where we do not dehumanise anyone - for example foreigners or the destitute). The point I'm trying to make is that it isn't in the individualistic and immoral Tory mindset to 'do the right thing', and we are all now living within the monster it has become.

LangSpartacusCleg · 16/03/2020 06:57

Dominic Cummings is a truly evil and dangerous man.

Know him personally, do you?

Hyperbole like that makes it impossible to take you seriously. Criticize, by all means. But FFS go for policy rather than personality.

HelgaHere1 · 16/03/2020 07:01

I have faith in our medical experts.

NO ONE KNOWS what the best decisions are . We'll know after the event when stats are studied.

Teateaandmoretea · 16/03/2020 07:06

The 'science' is simple multiplication! One person gets it, gives it to 3people, they all give it to 3 people and so on!

No it isn't simple, unless you are going to stay in isolation forever. Then everyone will lose their jobs, houses and be extremely unhealthy without exercise and with long term increased stress.

See the bigger picture. If Ireland stays in lockdown for a year you are all in trouble. If more people in the UK get it we are also in trouble but maybe we can salvage something re the health and mental wellbeing of the people and the economy.

There is no simple solution to this, if you think that there is you are very naive. China are now going back to work because they have to, presumably this will lead to an increase in cases again.

Why didn't Ireland quarantine all the idiots who had been to the Cheltenham festival? Now that would have been sensible.

hmmmmn · 16/03/2020 07:07

They WANT us all infected anyone who is not in a risk category so we all become immune, they have told anyone who is at high risk NOT to go out!

We all catch it, hopefully get better become immune then it will go away and hopefully not return 🥴

Nearlypassover · 16/03/2020 07:08

I do agree with you OP, but I am wondering if the UK has a higher percentage of two working parents for primary aged children.

I’d be interested to know about this.

Roselilly36 · 16/03/2020 07:08

I totally agree, the government seem clueless. I am staying home with my family for however long it takes, as unfortunately I have an autoimmune illness.

Take responsibility for yourselves & your families, don’t rely on government to protect you and make the right decisions, they don’t care how many of the “herd” die. If I hear the phrase, we are listening to the scientists one more time I think I will scream.

Ladynada39 · 16/03/2020 07:11

Liverpool and Madrid during the week

I live in South Africa. Although we have cases, we've had no deaths yet, and WE decided to close our borders.

I am astounded that the UK is not doing it, and I'm shocked at the reasons people give on this issue, but on the other hand it actually makes sense.

Maybe our economy will suffer tremendously but we won't have that many die, whereas your economy will come out on top but you'll have lots of deaths from it. We really don't give these politicians enough credit for their evil plans. Shock
