Does anyone think Boris is right?

I'm not saying I do. But I'm curious to see if anyone agrees with the strategy they're going for as most of what I'm reading is against.

Eton's closed to protect future Bojos but the poor must get infected (and all their families) as they are the working class herd. Rich tories think they're the shepherds but feels like they're secretly the butchers. Confused

No

Dong,

There are a lot of candidates, thankfully, although we have never produced an effective coronavirus vaccine before for any other coronavirus.

I think the approach is right for now. And it is not Boris’s own doing. They consult top specialists who know better than me and Boris so I trust them.
The plans can also change and I trust the government will be fluid in their decisions if different evidence or research is deemed relevant to the situation at the time.
I utterly distrust the media including social media. The public and mass-media are in hysterics because the approach in the UK is different. It might not be the best approach but it doesn’t mean the other option is better. We don’t know, is as simple as that.
I hope the government will stick to their plan (current or future) based on scientific advice and not change only because of public pressure.
However, more transparency and revealing of sources is needed to a)attempt to demonstrate the reasoning, b) give the public clear background information because some people want to know c) keep the population busy with dissecting that information

The UK economy will be severely affected once the hospitality and travel sector collapses completely. International trade will be a completely different landscape, production accross the globe will diminish, transport of goods will be different, everything will be different. Economy is very important to the country and the world.

Randomschoolworker19 · 15/03/2020 21:41

No.

The government have a number of taps available that will either slow or increase the spread.

These are:
Closing schools
Rapid testing and tracing.
Self isolation
WFH
Preventing large gatherings
Lock downs of public places
Closing boarders
Travel bans

At the moment we're only self isolating and some businesses are WFH, although the government hasn't mandated this. Soon over 70s will self isolate but most of the taps are still on so even though government rhetoric is that they want to flatten the curve and slow the spread, in reality its spreading like wild fire.

The most logical thing would be to turn off all the taps to buy us more time to work on a vaccine and antiviral drugs and so we could better equip the NHS with ventilators, which incidentally is what every other country is doing.

People keep saying that there will be 2nd or even 3rd waves in other countries like it will be a bad thing. You want as few people to get it at once as possible! And surely it's better for people to get it in wave 2 or 3 when we have more drugs and know more about the virus?

ohnononononono · 15/03/2020 21:46

Yes.

Saoirse7 · 15/03/2020 21:46

Totally agree @randomschoolworker19. Turn off all taps and start to turn on when we are ready to deal with the overflow.

Worrying that one of the taps is actually giving accurate data Hmmsure if you don't test and report all the actual cases then your numbers can look however the hell they way to look.

Sakura7 · 15/03/2020 21:48

No. The reasons why are obvious if you study the response of the countries ahead of us and listen to the vast majority of experts.

But...look at Italy. Massive countrywide lockdown and STILL the infection rate and death toll continue to rise. Surely an indication that other countries are not necessarily getting it right either?

I would choke on the words 'I agree with Boris' and I'm still not sure I do...but I don't wholly disagree. And as PPs have said, it's not Boris making these scientific decisions.

Sakura7 · 15/03/2020 22:14

Italy reacted too slowly. That should be a caution to the rest of us. Now that they have implemented a lockdown, it will take a couple of weeks to see the impact on the numbers. They will come down.

Saoirse7 · 15/03/2020 22:44

One thing is for sure, Boris and his loved ones will be squirrelled away nicely until this blows over. He'll let the peasants on the streets contract the virus as part of the herd immunity plan. I mean, he hasn't been seen or heard of in two days.

'Nero fiddled while Rome burned' springs to mind...

nellodee · 15/03/2020 22:47

Italy's actions haven't had time to filter through yet. They only closed things down 6 days ago, I believe. As we see from these graphs in Wuhan, it takes 10 days for any effect to become visible, due to the incubation period.

Does anyone think Boris is right?
nellodee · 15/03/2020 22:48

Cross post, @Sakura7 Smile

110011pi · 15/03/2020 22:50

No. This herd immunity theory has no supporting evidence for this virus without a vaccine. At least that's what hundreds of scientists are warning. They have more credibility for me than an elitist imbecile.

lionsandwhales · 15/03/2020 22:51

UK is criticised for approach by WHO. There is no coordination across the world. Each country is scrabbling to stock lab tests, gloves and medical supplies. WHO needs to coordinate otherwise those with greatest political influence or money steal from rest of the world. #wouldtestifusaandeuropehadnotbulkpurchsedsupplies

Verily1 · 15/03/2020 22:52

No

He’s just out for his cronies

MigginsMrs · 15/03/2020 22:53

Yes, I think he is doing the right thing. Even though I don't like him.

This. It seems to make sense to me, accept that we will largely all get it but to try and manage how that happens. Throwing everything at it now leaves us all out of options if that doesn’t work. At least this way we can keep trying other things gradually.

Thanks for all the stats you've been posting, it's really useful and the kind of information that should be shared.

Sunshine1239 · 15/03/2020 23:04

Nell but what happens after lockdown? Nothing’s changed! The virus doesn’t suddenly disappear cos we hide! China’s rate has dropped because they’ve all been isolated so naturally it’ll stay low now. But there’s no vaccine yet so it’ll rise as soon as they’re out of the lockdown.

Sunshine1239 · 15/03/2020 23:05

They can’t lockdiwn for ever

Sakura7 · 15/03/2020 23:17

Sunshine1239

How will the virus have the opportunity to spread to new people if everyone is on lockdown?

Of course there is the possibility of a second wave, but you deal with it if/when it comes, hopefully better prepared than the first time and possibly with an effective antiviral in place.

alloutoffucks · 15/03/2020 23:39

Virus can only spread if they have a host. If everyone is in lock down, the virus will no longer have new hosts and will disappear. It will not suddenly re emerge.
This is basic public health information.

Look at the Black Death. There is a village in Derbyshire that self isolated and no one got the Black Death (one third of the population of England died of it in a 9 month period). When they emerged from their own lock down, still no one in the village got it.

alloutoffucks · 15/03/2020 23:41

I really want a government that will make the tough decisions and give leadership. We would not have had this wishy washy scandal with Margaret Thatcher in charge, She would have made the tough decisions and saved lives.

nellodee · 15/03/2020 23:42

Thanks, @Sakura7 Smile
