why aren't the antibc hand gel manufacturers producing any?

why the hell has the world's supply of hand sanitiser dried up? It's just three ingredients for gods sake and probably with an endless shelf life. Why cant the manufacturers get any out to the shops? Does it take years to make or something? A delay of a few days or even weeks is understandable but it it's months now. If a journalist is reading this can you please investigate how much longer the stores will have to wait to receive more supplies?

I think companies are prioritising hospitals and care settings before shops.

Ginfordinner · 14/03/2020 16:41

Soap is the best option, but a minimum 60% alcohol sanitiser is a good second option where soap and water is not available.

HotDogGuy · 14/03/2020 16:43

They may be prioritising hospitals, schools etc rather than stock for shops

Ginfordinner · 14/03/2020 16:43

I should hope so HotDogGuy, especially if the public are pinching them.

LaCherriesJubilee · 14/03/2020 16:44

I can see lots of hand gel start-ups appearing soon, and then collapsing once the crisis is passing and everyone loses interest in hand gel. Or they care but have enough stashed away to last them several lifetimes.

VividImagination · 14/03/2020 16:46

@Mummyoflittledragon I have also ordered some from Carethy (because I’m desperate) but the reviews are not good and although a few people have received their order many haven’t and there is a suggestion it may be a scam site. I’m still hopefully but not holding my breath. Mine hasn’t yet been dispatched!

RoseMartha · 14/03/2020 16:54

I heard from a nurse I know, she told me that as people have been stealing it where she works they have had to make sure there is only a small amount in each bottle.

They are unable to get more stock until the end of March.

Mummyoflittledragon · 14/03/2020 16:54

Vivid
Thanks for letting me know. I’ve spent £27 so if it doesn’t come I’ll be pissed off but it will just be a part of life. I hope you get yours. Smile

Ginfordinner · 14/03/2020 17:00

Could people who travel on public transport wear gloves, then wash their hands when they get to work?

Itwasntme1 · 14/03/2020 17:07

Apparently the bottles are made in China

Some kind person on her pointed me to Merci handy. I have ordered a few bottles, they have apparently been shipped, hopefully they arrive. My dad is in a High risk group and we have totally run out.

sleepismysuperpower1 · 14/03/2020 17:07

buy soap, unless you don't have access to water. there is some available on german amazon, here for around £2.50 with £1 ish shipping

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 14/03/2020 17:11

itwasbtme1, I can’t find on that site, where it gives the alcohol content. Do you know how much they contain?

ravenmum · 14/03/2020 17:12

Absolutely sick to death of multiple posters bleating on about soap and water being better, therefore don't bother with hand sanitizer.
My comment was not aimed specifically at you, but at all the millions of people who are using hand sanitizer when they are perfectly able to use soap. It's not all about you.

endofthelinefinally · 14/03/2020 17:13

Of course we all know soap and water is better. But you have to be able to access it.

Itwasntme1 · 14/03/2020 17:13

67% of 96 degrees alcohol.

Not entirely sure what that means, but it’s all I can get😊

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 14/03/2020 17:14

There were three pallets of alcohol wipes (around 400 tubs) stolen from one of the local hospitals. It’s fucking disgusting. These thieving pricks will be helping the spread of COVID19, as there won’t be enough for the staff to keep them and patients safe. They will be complicit in causing the illness and deaths of others.

ravenmum · 14/03/2020 17:14

Of course we all know soap and water is better.
I didn't know it at all until I read that article...

Itwasntme1 · 14/03/2020 17:15

My parcel hasn’t arrived yet, so can’t comment on quality - hopefully it does get here

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 14/03/2020 17:15

Thank you, itwasntme1

PepePig · 14/03/2020 17:42

@ravenmum

It may well not be all about me, but you're repeating a point that has been done to death in most of these threads. You're minimising genuine reasons why people are in desperate need for it and making them out to be stupid because they can just use soap instead... which is a void point when you think about their circumstances. People cannot port around sinks or bowls of warm water.

So, perhaps the point that I should be making is it isn't just about you. It's great you can use soap so often. Not so great for us who can't.

ivykaty44 · 14/03/2020 18:17

So anti bacteria plastic tubs are not hygienic 😳🤣 well we’re best of washing hands with bars of soap and water then

estelle78 · 14/03/2020 19:04

Darn I just went to the Merci Handi site mentioned up thread 2 hours ago and they've since sold out of hand gel - the power of Mumsnet.

I'd just like to echo what other posters are saying, that they need hand gel for when you CAN'T access soap and running water. Of course I'd rather wash my hands properly with soap, but it's not always a possible option when using public transport, shopping, school run coming home with young kids who may not have washed their hands enough or properly. I'd make my own if I could get hold of the ingredients but they've gone too!

estelle78 · 14/03/2020 19:10

I might start wearing disposable gloves Grin

Really though, I have an autoimmune condition so the lack of hand gel when I'm not able to wash my hands is worrying me. My parents are elderly and both have underlying health conditions, they won't see us at the moment which is fair enough.

Butterwhy · 14/03/2020 19:13

Hopefully the NHS is being prioritised.

HeronLanyon · 14/03/2020 19:21

I found two small bottles in a drawer at work (my own desk I hasten to add!) - it was like Christmas finding them. One half empty and probably out of date (? Does it go out of date) but I don’t care. Of course soap is better but when out and about and away from sink gel is brill.
Today I put plain water and bar soap in back of dp’s car so when out and about we can wash if it comes to that.
