why the hell has the world's supply of hand sanitiser dried up? It's just three ingredients for gods sake and probably with an endless shelf life. Why cant the manufacturers get any out to the shops? Does it take years to make or something? A delay of a few days or even weeks is understandable but it it's months now. If a journalist is reading this can you please investigate how much longer the stores will have to wait to receive more supplies?

Because we don't manufacture anything locally anymore.

anyname147 · 14/03/2020 14:38

postal/freight services have still been working and imports/exports of goods still been happening though...

I read on here that a lot of the packaging is from China, and there were all kinds on problems if you even change packaging a bit, new labels designed etc. It made sense when I read it, just can't remember it all now!!

Purplewhitelie · 14/03/2020 14:40

Cause China make it. Supply chain.

Anotheruser02 · 14/03/2020 14:40

It is produced in the UK, probably not all of it, but lots.

DirtyDancing · 14/03/2020 14:40

I know of a family company in the Midlands producing it! 1,000 bottles going online very soon, £3 per bottle. They are also tying to offer to make it for the NHS too. Not profiteering and at normal cost. Hard to tel anyone in the NHS they have the capacity and capability to do it though... only supply chain knock on is a lot of packaging for the bottles comes from China...

Hairwizard · 14/03/2020 14:42

Surely a bottle of vodka and some tea tree oil work just aswell if really desparate?

Finfintytint · 14/03/2020 14:42

There’s also a Welsh company who use local materials. They’ve taken on extra staff and have got more machines so I think they are doing their best.

Letsdoanamechangeagain · 14/03/2020 14:42

I'd read it was to do with supply. They have the product, but not the bottles? If it's that bad, I wonder if it might be an idea to supply local pharmacies with 5 litre pump bottles and people can go in and refill theirs? (If indeed that is the issue)

LittleLittleLittle · 14/03/2020 14:44

@Nowthereistwo we are the world's 11th biggest exporter of toilet roll so we do make things.

Frownette · 14/03/2020 14:44

@Hairwizard vodka's only 40%

BumpkinSpiceBatty · 14/03/2020 14:44

@Hairwizard handgel needs to be at least 60%, vodka is usually 60%.

picklemewalnuts · 14/03/2020 14:44

@Hairwizard!

Stop with the misinformation!

Vodka is usually only 40%proof. Gel needs to be 60%plus!

bemoreeverything · 14/03/2020 14:45

Surely a bottle of vodka and some tea tree oil work just aswell if really desparate?

Why would it?

LooksBetterWithAFilter · 14/03/2020 14:45

They are making it but they can only produce so much at a time then share it round.
I work for a chain pharmacy and we got 9 bottles I total in this week all the stores did and they were snapped up almost as soon as they arrived. That was 9 each to nearly 800 shops and that’s one company.

StatisticallyChallenged · 14/03/2020 14:45

Hairwizard - not a high enough alcohol proportion, needs to be 60%. Surgical spirit mixed in correct ratios is a valid option

BumpkinSpiceBatty · 14/03/2020 14:46

Whoops vodka is usually 40%

Mrsjayy · 14/03/2020 14:46

Well people are "stocking up" and now its gone we just have to wait for me the demand is higher than the supply. I noticed somebody i was working with hand gelled 6 times in 90 minutes as well as a few handwashes people are over using in their panic.

TeacupDrama · 14/03/2020 14:47

A friend of mine works in a children's hospital the gel keeps getting stolen from wall containers so they have to use cable ties to stop them being stolen and then people come in and refill their bottles from hospital supply so often bottles empty almost as soon as put out why would people steal from NHS and sick children?

OxanaVorontsova · 14/03/2020 14:48

use soap, its more effective

iVampire · 14/03/2020 14:48

As it is the alcohol specifically that interferes with the this type of virus’ shell, then no, tea tree won’t do

There are hand gel producers in UK, working long hours. They cannot keep up with demeans (though this will correct over time, especially when new suppliers of bottles come on-stream)

Mrsjayy · 14/03/2020 14:48

My dds work got some in they had to fasten it to a wall people were eyeing it up

MrsTerryPratchett · 14/03/2020 14:50

why would people steal from NHS and sick children?

Because they are utter cunts. Nicking bog roll from Wetherspoons? Whatever. But that is vile.

Mrsjayy · 14/03/2020 14:50

That is bloody shocking feck the sick kids eh as long as "they" are alright!

HonestlyItsFine · 14/03/2020 14:52

why would people steal from NHS and sick children?

Because they selfish and don't give a fuck about other people. Sad but true.
