why the hell has the world's supply of hand sanitiser dried up? It's just three ingredients for gods sake and probably with an endless shelf life. Why cant the manufacturers get any out to the shops? Does it take years to make or something? A delay of a few days or even weeks is understandable but it it's months now. If a journalist is reading this can you please investigate how much longer the stores will have to wait to receive more supplies?

Pharmacies in Italy are making it to sell and sharing the official WHO recipe so people can make it from home: video is in Italian but easy to follow and I listed the ingredients. The end result is a 80-% gel.
YES washing hand is better, but until you can access water (between supermarket and home, off the bus, at the school gate, ....) use it

So here is the videro and formula
video.corriere.it/cronaca/come-produrre-amuchina-casa-pochi-euro-ricetta-approvata-dall-oms/b11ec278-5efa-11ea-bf24-0daffe9dc780

833 ml alcohol 96%
42 ml hydrogen peroxide 3% (for antibacterial properties so it isn't contaminated )
15 ml glycerol
add denatured water (or 10 min boiled water cooled down ) to reach the 1 litre mark.

I tried it using methylated spirit and it was really easy and quick. My end result was more liquid than the gel, maybe I need more glycerol.

I bought the methylated spirit at a DIY shop, the peroxide and glycerol at a pharmacy and I also bought a small graduated jar at the pharmacy to measure the glycerol and peroxide.

And I put it in those small travel bottle for planes.

We have installed dispensers at work, like many companies.

We have now been advised that the supplier have been asked to prioritise supplies for the NHS, so although they will try to honour our next order they cannot guarantee it. This is a large national company and we source our supplies through a large facilities management company. We also tried our stationery supplier but faced the same problem.

Meanwhile people are wasting it, by applying to to hands that have just been washed. I think people mis-understand how it works. It deals with any virus on your hands but doesn't provide some kind of force field.

Meant to add the official WHO recipe.

I can't find it in English, but is is easy to understand the ingredients.

My hubby is a manufacturer and has been making it solid for last two weeks so it is getting made. I am fortunate as I have plenty and been sharing it out with vulnerable family members

Is methylated spirit safe? It has warnings on the bottle saying not to get it on skin.

Jade1976 · 14/03/2020 20:19

It contains methanol so not good to use it repeatedly as it gets absorbed through your skin.

LeGrandBleu · 14/03/2020 20:36

Methylated spirit used to contain methanol hence the name, now it doesn't any longer as people would drink it anyway and be very unwell.

Here in Australi, it is denatured with bitrex so people won't drink it
