www.cnbc.com/2020/03/13/europe-is-now-the-epicenter-of-the-coronavirus-pandemic-who-says.html

Tedros said countries need to take a comprehensive approach to try to fight the pandemic.

"Not testing alone, not contact tracing alone, not quarantine alone, not social distancing alone, do it all," he said.
"Any country that looks at the experience of other countries with large epidemics and thinks that won't happen to us is making a deadly mistake, it can happen to any country."

We're not doing it all.

I'd rather have austerity, and a few years of a recovering economy than die and leave my kids with nobody but each other, thanks.

alloutoffucks · 14/03/2020 09:54

Look think what you want.
But I do think it is British arrogance if anyone really thinks only Britain has the right approach and every other country, WHO are lots and lots of experts are all wrong.

And I am furious that my kids could be left without a mother because of this. All because Boris wants to gamble against all the experts.

I do not understand why anyone would think that every other country has got it wrong, and only Britain has got it right.

TeddyIsaHe · 14/03/2020 09:56

I don’t think they’ve got it right, but if you close everything now how are we going to have enough frontline people necessary for the

bumblingbovine49 · 14/03/2020 09:56

calling The WHO out for the length of time they took to call this a pandemic?hmm

The who delayed declaring a pandemic exactly because people then start to say that we can't change things and move straight to mitgation . The WHO want everyone to keep doing everything even though it is a pandemic. The fact that is declared a pandemic should not make people give up but it has done this in the UK

TeddyIsaHe · 14/03/2020 09:56

Pressed send too soon, frontline people to work in hospitals, supermarkets, police etc etc because they’ll have to be at home with children.

alloutoffucks · 14/03/2020 10:00

I work in a scientific company. I can tell you that if every other country, and lots of experts were saying in my field that the science was saying x. And only the British Government were saying the science says y. We would not be blindly following the British Government.

And I have over the last few weeks pointed out a number of times where the "science" the British Government are quoting does not make sense. Every time I have been rubbished by some on here. And then the Government say the truth.

This includes the amount likely to die in Britain from their approach - I did the maths, said the numbers here and was attacked for scaremongering. The Government are now saying the same.
Secondly that the virus would mutate and the British Government approach would mean it would become a seasonal virus killing people every year. This morning the Chief Medical Officer says the same thing.

TeddyIsaHe · 14/03/2020 10:01

Well what do we do then? What’s the answer? Tank the economy and cause years of suffering for the poorest in this country, start preventative measures too soon and end up having to continue for months, or what?

alloutoffucks · 14/03/2020 10:01

@TeddyIsaHe Even countries that have done a lock down have not closed everything.

alloutoffucks · 14/03/2020 10:02

@TeddyIsaHe Follow WHO's guidance.

Lexilooo · 14/03/2020 10:02

Those that doubt his words should look at Taiwan and how they have halted the virus.

bumblingbovine49 · 14/03/2020 10:04

"how these countries where it seems to have been contained won't get another massive rise in cases.*

They .may but every will.cintinue to aggressive my test and screen and isolate individual cases. Nowadays if you go to China you need.to.self isolae for 14 days and they police it. It is compulsory. This will continue for a long time

The UK government are going they can get it over with fairly quickly and get back.to normal but other countries know they have to keep being aggreicely proactive until we have a vaccine or a cure. If no vaccine or.curr is developed in time they will probably lose the fight and it becomes endemic in their country but they are not accepting that this is inevitable

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 14/03/2020 10:04

Look, if it will make you feel better then why don't you send an email to your MP and to Boris, detailing everything you think should be done and including the maths you did?

At least that's more productive than ranting at some internet randoms on here.

ValancyRedfern · 14/03/2020 10:05

It's not just the British Govt. Germany and the Netherlands are taking a similar approach to us. Closing everything down will cause destitution among people who struggle to get pay check to pay check and pay their rent on zero hours contracts. The economy isn't just an abstract concept - people will suffer and die if we enter a depression. And when everyone ends their quarantine the virus will pick back up where it left off. It's a gamble either way but those aren't fears if we take the do it all approach.

Neome · 14/03/2020 10:06

Yes, I also did the maths and was attacked here for scaremongering.

A thread I started a week ago about the difficult descions doctors would have to make was pulled after a lot of angry attacks. An almost identical thread has not been started.

I’m finding it very sad, we are now self isolating due to symptoms according to government guidelines.

Saying we will get through it is only true for the vast majority who will have mild or no illness. Some of our community have celebrated their last Christmas thinking they had many good years ahead.

MaomiMak · 14/03/2020 10:06

Also as soon as the schools closed people took their kids and travelled all over the country spreading it everywhere.

alloutoffucks · 14/03/2020 10:09

No Germany are not taking the same approach as us at all. I have family there. They are extensively testing, contact tracing and getting them to isolate. This is an approach recommended by WHO.

No other country is shrugging and saying most of the population has to get this virus. No one.

WhyNotMe40 · 14/03/2020 10:11

But it's not just death rate. Evidence is emerging or permanent lung damage from survivors!
The most likely outcome is pulmonary fibrosis which has 3-5 year life expectancy.
And a huge medical burden.
There are long term consequences

Neome · 14/03/2020 10:11

And emailed maths to my MP some time ago.

Within her very full and thoughtful reply she wrote

”I know this is a worrying time for many people and I am impressed with the calm and reasonable way that people are raising their concerns and suggestions with me, so thank you again for taking the time to write. And please be assured, the important points you raise in your message will help inform my continuing discussions with NHS leaders”

Purplewhitelie · 14/03/2020 10:11

I am with WHO.

Do it all.

Please think carefully about the day to day choices you are making.

alloutoffucks · 14/03/2020 10:12

@Neome I know the maths was obvious early on. But no one wanted to hear it.
I really don't understand how people can have such strong opinions about this virus as some people do on MN and yet seem so unaware of such basic stuff.
It was always obvious that if you just let the virus run through the population hundreds of thousands of people would die.

But our Government just think it is too hard to try and stop this virus.

Cam77 · 14/03/2020 10:13

"The Tories don't care"
Explains it all really, though you should have added "about people". They'll move damn fast to protect the London financial industry if and when necessary. I'm actually starting to wonder if the British government has started its own Chinese style "50 cent" army to spread the "nothing we can do" narrative.

alloutoffucks · 14/03/2020 10:13

@WhyNotMe40 I am not even thinking about that realistic scenario. It is so scary.

Purplewhitelie · 14/03/2020 10:14

I don’t think people are looking at worldometer.

The only problem is some countries are telling porky lies to guard their economy.

alloutoffucks · 14/03/2020 10:14

@Cam77 I have thought that for the last week. Just advance search some posters. It is clear that is what is happening. There are certain phrases that are always used.

Cam77 · 14/03/2020 10:14

Germany is closing nearly all schools on Monday. For the last fricking time.
