So far worldwide we have approx 118,000 people have been confirmed infected, and 7.7 billion people. That works out as 0.0015%. In the U.K. it’s 456 out of 67.7 million, so at 0.0007%. Why all the panic? The biggest over reaction ever?
Everyday 5 people die on the roads, we don’t close all the roads.
People need to get some perspective and stop encouraging each other to panic on social media and websites like this.

Do you know how statistics work? The line is progressive.

CoronaCon · 12/03/2020 14:11

@KahlanRahl I do understand statistics which is why I am asking why the overreaction. In real life, I know nobody concerned.

Countries can’t afford to test everyone - only the symptomatic people they are willing to treat. China was able to test and treat most symptomatic people which is why their death rate is relatively low - the news from the ground in Italy is that the symptomatic oldest old aren’t even being admitted to hospital as there are not enough beds / some hospitals have put an age limit of 65 on icu referrals, which explains their higher death rate as the people who can’t go in to hospital can’t be tested until after they die.

As a NHS doctor in Italy said recently - the young without health conditions are still dying / becoming disabled from Covid-19 it’s just that the first deaths (Like in any pandemic) are the elderly. We all should be terrified.

Goingunderground2 · 12/03/2020 14:14

Is this a joke post?

Purplewhitelie · 12/03/2020 14:15

Omg it’s the mathematical trend that’s looking like it’s bigger than the Spanish flu at the moment.

I’m getting really frustrated with this as you can tell.

Search coronvirus worldometer.

Purplewhitelie · 12/03/2020 14:16

Only it’s not the flu it’s SARS-COV-2 google it.

Jerseygaly · 12/03/2020 14:16

Because they take so long to recover or die.
20% hospitalization of which 5% icu
Look at China fig still thousands not recovered.

BeansOnToast4T · 12/03/2020 14:17

Well bully for you not to be worried. Keep that head in the sand and pretend it isn't happening ...........................

Reginabambina · 12/03/2020 14:17

The real figure would be much higher. A lot of infection will never be picked up and I’m willing to get that in a lot of countries even the full number of fatalities will not be known.

Snaga · 12/03/2020 14:17

The key words here are "confirmed infected" I'd bet all the money I have on there being a substantial number more infected who aren't on the radar of health officials, including here in the UK.

Your attitude is just as harmful as the lemmings going into full panic.

It might only affect a small number of the population, but it spreads pretty easily from the reports and is lethal in anyone with an underlying health condition. There isn't a cure so reducing the impact of it spreading is a sensible approach, but it needs to be balanced against the needs of the population and the country in general.

Are you seriously suggesting that we ignore the World Health Organisation declaring a pandemic and just crack on as normal? You sound like Farage...after all people who dedicate their lives to being experts in their field like WHO couldn't possibly know more than a keyboard warrior goading people online!

Purplewhitelie · 12/03/2020 14:18

I imagine many of the elderly ones are being signed off as geriatric pneumonia. Disgraceful.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 12/03/2020 14:19

I'm guessing you're a little bored this afternoon and are posting something idiotic to get a reaction?

Purplewhitelie · 12/03/2020 14:19

You will be we worried when you’ve had it believe me.

bellinisurge · 12/03/2020 14:20

Up early, Donald? Waiting for your breakfast in the White House?

CoronaCon · 12/03/2020 14:20

So you’re all going to ignore the endless first hand experiences of ‘I thought it was jet lag’, etc? Yes the old and ill will suffer, but it’s not as bad as is being made out. It’s like Brexit. People like a bad news story.

OP posts:
Jerseygaly · 12/03/2020 14:20

The death rate may go as big as 20% if we get overwhelmed as in no hospital treatment.
Tbh the Italy and uk situation was obvious if you can look at numbers.
Covid is just really bad for the lungs. Could cause permanent damage.
Then you have to add on all normal treatment that can't be done too.

PutYourBackIntoit · 12/03/2020 14:21

Have my first biscuit Biscuit

GrumpyHoonMain · 12/03/2020 14:22

So you’re all going to ignore the endless first hand experiences of ‘I thought it was jet lag’, etc? Yes the old and ill will suffer, but it’s not as bad as is being made out.

Have you read the most recent news out of Italy? It’s not the old or ill in ICU there.

Snaga · 12/03/2020 14:23

So you’re all going to ignore the endless first hand experiences of ‘I thought it was jet lag’, etc?

And you're seriously ignoring the WHO...you know, scientific experts rather than Janet who came home from Italy feeling a bit rough?

Purplewhitelie · 12/03/2020 14:23

For all the smug ones.

Think about this. There’s is a lot of people young and old out their with undiagnosed problems such heart and diabetes.

Good luck with it.

AutumnCrow · 12/03/2020 14:24

So your dear hero Donald Trump is overreacting? Yeah, Italy is faking it, and China didn't impose draconian measures, and exponential curve shapes are just so pretttttyyy!!

CoronaCon · 12/03/2020 14:24

Over 25,000 people tested in the U.K. with 456 positive. They haven’t tested anyone. They have tested people ill with symptoms. Less the 2% of ill people with symptoms have Corona. You all need to get into the real world and panic less.

OP posts:
tryingtoprep · 12/03/2020 14:25

I haven't seen much panicking. I don't use social media except Mumsnet though. I have seen plenty of people extremely concerned. Increased worry is unsurprising since the UK government seems determined to ignore advice from leading medical and scientific experts including the WHO. Being concerned and wanting proactive measures is not the same as panicking. That's what those in denial will be doing when the penny finally drops, but by then things will already be very bad.

The car accidents. Yes, many people require hospital treatment after car accidents. Where will they go when hospital beds are full because of Covid? Who looks after the car accident victims when doctors and nurses are too busy caring for Covid patients or are off sick themselves?

Why do you want to wait until things get bad? Personally I like to take preemptive action to avoid bad things happening in the first place.

Purplewhitelie · 12/03/2020 14:26

It’s the viral damage that you have to live with after but never mind your clearly invisible.
