Step Change is expected - move from containing to delay. < Rita Chakriobarti on BBC News just now.

georgedawes · 12/03/2020 13:02

Can anyone tell me where I could get a thermometer? My sister is ill, 111 won't test but I'm worried about her.

cjt110 · 12/03/2020 13:02

@Rocketmam May I ask how you reached this decision? I know if I said to my husband about it, he'd think I was crackers.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 12/03/2020 13:02

There was also a very handsome professor (French/Belgium? - Nicolas Locker or something similar) from Surrey University on TV yesterday.

cjt110 · 12/03/2020 13:03

@georgedawes Local chemists? Local Supermarkets and their in store pharmacies?

Cohle · 12/03/2020 13:03

What's actually the point of shutting schools/banning flights? OK, we put it off for a month. Then when we re-open, we instantly get reinfected and same problem.

But even with mass closures the likelihood is the disease will continue to spread. Just as containment and contact tracing failed to prevent the spread of the disease. Closures will keep the infection rate at a level the NHS can hopefully cope with, rather than waiting until things get as bad as Italy to do too little too late.

georgedawes
I got one for dd last week in Boots. Everywhere else seemed to be sold out.

georgedawes · 12/03/2020 13:04

thanks cjt, she can't go out and I'm not nearby so wanted to get one online if possible. Can't find anywhere though!

badfurday · 12/03/2020 13:05

@georgedawes Amazon?

ArthurMorgan · 12/03/2020 13:06

Apparently Scotland has just gone into lockdown also

bumblingbovine49 · 12/03/2020 13:06

The things that seem to work on surfaces are sodium hyperchlorite (bleach) min 0.5% solution (1:10 mix of most household bleaches which are 5% solutions) [[https://www.thesun.co.uk/fabulous/11112200/coronavirus-beat-using-bleach-cheap-tesco

Also and hydrogen peroxide min 3 % solution [https://www.consumerreports.org/cleaning/common-household-products-that-can-destroy-novel-coronavirus/]]

Also alcohol based cleaning products min 70% alchohol

Other disinfectants are not as effective

Milton tablets are bleach but you need to dissolve a tablet in a litre not in 5 litres like the instructions say (which is usually for baby bottles) www.checkout.ie/a-brands/milton-88522

georgedawes · 12/03/2020 13:07

can't find a decent one on Amazon unfortunately

bumblingbovine49 · 12/03/2020 13:07

sorry that article says 3% hydrogen peroxide bur the paper I read on research this this said 0.5%. I'd go with 3% to be sure

cjt110 · 12/03/2020 13:07

Rita Chackrobarti has just said "the COBRA meeting that is happening in a few minutes" so perhaps it hasn't even been had yet?

KarenTookTheKids · 12/03/2020 13:08

Scotland talking about banning large gatherings, NOT lockdown Hmm

Once again, can we PLEASE stick to the facts??

AvocadoOwl · 12/03/2020 13:08

Apparently Scotland has just gone into lockdown also

According to whom?

badfurday · 12/03/2020 13:08

@cjt110 it's scheduled for 1.15 I think

ofwarren · 12/03/2020 13:09

@georgedawes Ebay but not 'til 18 March

GinandGingerBeer · 12/03/2020 13:09

Our current work guidance (Government dept, one of the larger ones.
"If a family member has flu or flu like symptoms, employees must come into work as normal unless they are ill themselves"
FFS! There's no way of knowing if it's CV as they're still only testing if you've been overseas (unless that's recently changed?)

kirinm · 12/03/2020 13:10

Unless Scotland have literally just changed their mind, they are not going into lockdown at all. How ridiculous.

cjt110 · 12/03/2020 13:10

Apparently Scotland has just gone into lockdown also Source?

HasaDigaEebowai · 12/03/2020 13:11

BBC literally now reporting that it hasn't been decided but nicola sturgeon is suggesting that on the basis that large gatherings have to have police/ambulance attendance and they're needed elsewhere

Nothing mentioned on bbc news about Scotland.. other than that NS will be putting her point across in the cobra meeting that is happening shortly.

If govt are worried that people will get bored and break restrictive measures if they are implemented too soon.. why won't they just make it a legal requirement for people to isolate, curfew etc etc? Surely it's better to act now with strict laws, than later?
