What are people not able to get or is it all fine where you are?

Tesco in Bradford just now... no hand sanitizer and the hand soaps looked a bit sparse (still a lot just not full).

Nothing else looked amiss. Plenty of loo roll, pasta, paracetamol etc.

Asked at checkout and he said that other than people adding in an extra hand soap or sanitizer he hadnt noticed any difference from a usual weekend.

Pilot12 · 08/03/2020 12:28

My local Tesco superstore has no dry pasta, hand wash, soap, cheap painkillers, kids medicine, no cleaning products that are antibacterial, no UHT milk.....

According to the DM today Tesco are going to start rationing these items to five per customer...

There were signs near the handsoap and toilet roll that they were limited to 5 per customer but there were still loads on the shelves.

NeckPainChairSearch · 08/03/2020 12:37

We live in an affluent area. The Tesco driver today said that flour, yeast, pasta and loo roll were very limited (actually, the yeast was completely gone, I'd ordered some and not delivered).

He said that they have a strategy in place to keep delivering even if people are in quarantine - leave shopping bags by door etc.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 08/03/2020 12:44

My local Sainsburys was out of anti bac gel (has been for about a week) and hand soap. I picked up the last two bottles for me and my DPs.

Everything else looked fine, inc. loo roll.

Sarcelle · 08/03/2020 12:56

I have just been in a Sainsbury. They had toilet roll which was limited to one 9 pack per person. They had pasta and rice but shelves looked emptier than normal. Lots of handwash, anti bac wipes and soap still on the shelves, didn't check painkillers. I got some tinned tomatoes which have been out of stock in my nearest supermarket.

I think they should look at what is selling and restricting everything to stop the panic buying. I was tempted to get my allotted 9 rolls but stopped myself. I have plenty to last. I play fast and loose with toilet paper, I overuse. This has stopped me and made me less generous with sheets per use!

WhereverIMayRoam · 08/03/2020 13:04

I think it’s a good idea for supermarkets to limit how much customers can buy. It’s clearly not a supply issue as some have empty shelves while others are business as usual and there are no reports of issues with imports/exports as far as I know.

I was in a supermarket this morning (Dublin) and other than no hand sanitizer it was as fully stocked as usual. Out of curiosity I looked at the cleaning/personal care aisles and there was plenty of bleach, cleaning spray, hand soap, bar soap, paracetamol and so on. I mean they even had the usual special offers on big packs of toilet roll, I bought a 16 pack for €7 as I always would when I see it on offer. Still shelves of the stuff left for all the other customers! Yet a colleague just a few miles away couldn’t get hand soap, baked beans or pasta Confused. If people can’t behave rationally and responsibly then the stores need to put some rules in place.

Skyejuly · 08/03/2020 13:10

So glad I started buying werks ago before it was limited. I have 7 of us here so limiting is awful for us. I have lots of flour/yeast/toilet roll etc

skinnymarshmallow · 08/03/2020 13:22

I saw a post on fb about people panic buying children's paracetamol and realised we didn't have any in. Went to the shop thinking I wouldn't be able to get any but there was plenty. I'm going to also now to inspect the loo roll situation...

LouQoo · 08/03/2020 13:29

Hummus, pita breads, hand sanitizer and anything with dettol in are all sold out.

Very low stocks of bar soap, hand soap and painkillers.

Plenty of loo roll though.

Meckity1 · 08/03/2020 13:51

Not too bad here, though the loo roll section looked like it had been attacked in Tescos.

What I found odd was that the car park was practically empty, but that delivery slots for online shopping were over subscribed.

Sarcelle · 08/03/2020 14:36

Just went to my nearest supermarket for non panic buying items (hot cross buns!) and they have restocked the toilet paper and restricting it to a pack per person. People were having it confiscated at the till!

ClientQueen · 08/03/2020 14:38

No soap or hand gel or liquid hand soap. Boots restricting to 2 per person (not that there was any to buy!)
Lots of people hovering looking at the vitamins/supplements in both boots and Superdrug

RhubarbTea · 08/03/2020 14:44

That's not odd at all if you assume that people want to stay home away from other people's germs!

viccat · 08/03/2020 14:44

People have been posting photos of empty shelves in the local FB group - especially handwash, loo roll, cleaning products, dry goods like pasta and rice. This is in SE London and have seen different shops mentioned so far.

I shop with Ocado and lots of things are out of stock on there too.

hamsterchump · 08/03/2020 15:00

Lidl (Cornwall) on Friday had everything except cucumbers and cheap painkillers. I wondered if I'd missed some kind of miracle cure!

Makinganewthinghappen · 08/03/2020 15:14

I was wandering round the shops in my very small town today and the only things sold out were the cheap ibuprofen ( they had some for he more expensive ones) which were sold out in all shops.
And hand sanitizer.

Everything else was in stock BUT the shelves were more empty than normal - no where near actually being out of stock though on food - loads of toilet roll as well.

I am on the Wirral.

Davincitoad · 08/03/2020 15:16

In north east not seen any hand Sanitiser, toilet rolls low, painkillers down to the £5 a pack paracetamol types. No hand soap on Friday but seems to be some in now

MamaFlintstone · 08/03/2020 15:17

I was in a Sainsbury’s local this morning and there was plenty of toilet roll, paracetamol (although it was own brand for 95p and it definitely doesn’t usually cost that much) and soaps. Only thing that was notable for its absence was the hand gel.

BarbedBloom · 08/03/2020 15:19

No handwash or bleach or wipes etc, could only get toilet roll in Wilko, no pasta and struggled to get oat milk. I also couldn't get a delivery slot until end of the week when I can normally get one without issue

Thesearmsofmine · 08/03/2020 15:33

No hand sanitizers in any of the shops here in West Yorkshire(I’m near Leeds). There was loads of toilet roll in our huge Tesco and branded paracetamol but no own brand stuff. I noticed that they didn’t have any eggs though and Asda hardly had any available online when I ordered last night just a couple of the more expensive types were coming up.

ProfYaffle · 08/03/2020 15:37

I went to Aldi yesterday, no pasta left, limited nappies and canned food was really low stock. Hand soaps have been very limited in all shops.

Anti bac gels went out of stock in every shop over a week ago, no stock since.

ProfYaffle · 08/03/2020 15:38

loo roll seems to be OK everywhere though.

Mcgieml3 · 08/03/2020 16:03

Sounds like it’s pretty much everywhere, wonder if the shops will sort it or it’ll get worse ... there might be some people opposed to panic buying that start to when the see the shortages

Was in aldi earlier and they were stocking up shelves however people were clearing it out in seconds (who needs a whole box of 20 packs of pasta which i saw one man grab). Poor woman putting put the toilet roll nearly got pushed over. One man put 4 packs of 16 rolls in his trolley and announced to people at the tills 'look they are putting 16 roll packs out'. Absolutely embarassing.
