What are people not able to get or is it all fine where you are?

I live in West London, on the zone 1/2 border. Our big Tesco has absolutely no loo roll this morning and no pasta apart from a very premium brand (and unpopular shape) and there wasn’t much of that. The tinned beans, tinned tomatoes etc had been absolutely ransacked and none of the cheaper brands were left. Hand soap and painkillers were the same. We just did our normal weekly shop but some people were acting very strangely!

daisypond · 07/03/2020 21:28

I’m in London too - zone 2 - supermarket much depleted of loo roll, pasta, tinned tomatoes, soap.

SpeckledyHen · 07/03/2020 21:29

Waitrose in Berkshire
Also no pain killers and very little soap .
Don’t know about hand sanitiser as I don’t use and don’t know where it is in the shop.

Its hit my area now😑 Tescos (one right across the road) and Sainsburys had lots of empty shelves. Pasta, oil, cereals, bread and such. Post office was jam packed, mostly with people topping up their utilities with a lot of money!

I thought the loo roll thing was because China went short. But China doesn't produce loo roll, they have it shipped in and it's bulky and expensive so went into short supply very fast?

We are all victims of global news...

Anyway, no loo roll or paracetamol/iboprufen in my Oxfordshire Aldi. They had plenty of maxflu type tablets though. I bought some.

MyDcAreMarvel · 07/03/2020 23:01

@ThunderboltandLightning Diarrhoea and nausea have been reported as symptoms of corona just less commonly that other symtoms.

AdoraBell · 07/03/2020 23:07

Somerset here, no hand sanitizer in any shops and yesterday no loo roll yesterday. Canned veg was almost gone too. Went back this morning and they had loo roll but it looked like the end of a Christmas shopping.

We only went for sourdough as that always sells out early.

Mcgieml3 · 08/03/2020 07:44

Be interesting to see how it goes now then...

I thought the loo roll thing was because paper pulp was being used to make face masks. If that's the case face sanitary products and nappies could be affected to. I think reusable would be the way to go rather than stockpiling.

A friend who works in Tesco's says it seems people would rather starve than eat whole meal pasta.

I'm a cleaner and I buy the cheap spring force bleach which has never been unavailable until now!

NeurotrashWarrior · 08/03/2020 08:26

A large ASDA near the cases in Newcastle has been out of many things for a few days. Quite a lot of panic buying.

KeepYourWigOn · 08/03/2020 08:32

All fine here, except hand gel. We're in Worcestershire.

YourStarlessEyes · 08/03/2020 08:37

South Wales here.

Toilet roll, paracetamol and antibacterial hand gels/wash are all gone in our local supermarkets and shops like home bargains too. Absolutely mental!

mindproject · 08/03/2020 08:43

Apart from hand sanitizer (I haven't tried to buy any, I just went to look for the sake of research on another thread) everything is completely normal in Leicester. Plenty of everything. Superdrug was the only store where there was one shelf empty of one brand of paracetamol.

Goldenmother · 08/03/2020 08:45

I live in north London and yesterday I went to do my weekly food shop in Sainsbury's the medicine section was low there shelves where pasta and rice would normally be was empty

Northernlass99 · 08/03/2020 08:54

Went to Tesco yesterday in N Kent, was very calm. No anti bac gel obviously, but plenty of hand wash and loads of toilet roll. No paracetamol but they had loads of that in Superdrug alongside all the very prominent displays of lemsip and other cold remedies, they must be rubbing their hands with glee!!

LynetteScavo · 08/03/2020 09:14

Not all hand wash is antibacterial. I plan to refill my hand wash containers with shower gel when they run out.

You need to start thinking outside the box, people.

Mcgieml3 · 08/03/2020 10:11

so I think I’m going to conclude the daily mail isn’t entirely making this up!

ceeveebee · 08/03/2020 11:17

I don’t think it’s necessary to use anti bac hand wash is it? Any soap will do won’t it? We have a few hand wash soaps as I always buy when on offer anyway, but have also stocked up on a few bars of cheap bar soap

Also have bought a mooncup and some reusable cotton baby wipes in case it comes to that.....

buttermilkwaffles · 08/03/2020 11:31

On the 25/30 minute walk home from town, if I walk along a particular road I walk past 5 small supermarkets and a Lidl. Plus another 2 in town and another 1 if I made a very slight detour into a shopping centre and also a Sainsbury's Local and Co-op Scotmid at either end of my street.
So 10 small supermarkets. I went into 4 of them yesterday and they all had everything mentioned (toilet roll etc) except paracetamol.

So TLDR - try the smaller supermarkets (Sainsbury's Local /Tesco Express, Co-op or a Lidl). M&S also had toilet paper but at more than twice the price of Lidl!

However the bigger out of town supermarkets have been cleared out...

(This is Edinburgh)

ceeveebee · 08/03/2020 11:32

Yes actually I bought paracetamol and calpol at the local garage.

LynetteScavo · 08/03/2020 11:51

I think supermarkets should limit how much toilet roll people can buy. It's not fair for people to load up their people carriers with masses, leaving elderly who have to walk/bus to the shop without any.

NeurotrashWarrior · 08/03/2020 12:13

Yes, we've had the shower gel conversation. Actually using it now as everywhere locally was sold out of actual hand wash, of any type. Haven't managed to get any hand sanitiser either.

Also picking up extra paracetamol at petrol stations as I have to use a fair bit for pain. And then if dh and I get any virus tbh.
