Worried I have Coronavirus

I know this might sound silly or far fetched but hear me out..

I'm very rarely ill. Probably once a year if that. But now I have the most horrendous cough, I can't catch my breath sometimes when the coughing starts. It's come out of nowhere and I'm absolutely floored.

Im seriously worried that it's something sinister. Like I said I'm rarely ill so this is out of sorts for me. I feel like I can't function because of the sore throat, coughing and general feeling of being unwell.

AIBU here? It's just so scary with everything that is going on at the moment, I'm thinking all sorts in my head.

@NoNewsisGood

All very interesting as regards YOUR experience of flu

However, please note that the NHS reports that theee quarters of people with flu have no symptoms!! Shock

Which is good news on that generally people won’t feel like @NoNew. But bad in terms of limiting spread of a future pandemic where it would be unclear who is infected

Elle7rose · 05/02/2020 14:12

Hi OP,
Obviously if you've been in close contact with people who've recently travelled from China then it's a legitimate worry.

There definitely was a horrible virus going round (not coronavirus) in the UK from November-ish onwards and it's probably still going around. My family all caught it just after Christmas and have only just got better. It started with a very scratchy cough and then led to feeling generally shakey and awful (some of us had headaches and mildly elevated temperatures [note mildly so not coronavirus-territory!]) for at least a week. The cough actually became productive (phlegmy) after a while and lasted 2-3 weeks.

If you are struggling to breathe and have a high fever then definitely do phone your local GP practice or 111 for advice.

There is a rumour circulating that the virus is from the relatively new bioscience lab in Wuhan which tests viruses in monkeys and is trying to make them more virulent. They were warned about possible transmission from monkeys but went ahead.

Imbo1c · 05/02/2020 19:47

I doubt that!

Mummyshark2019 · 05/02/2020 19:49

Call 111

And THIS is precisely how rumours circulate.

TatianaLarina · 05/02/2020 20:16

That’s just adapted from the rumour about HIV.

OhSoOuting · 05/02/2020 20:36

@Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow there are also rumours that Elvis is alive and runs a newsagent in Wigan. Doesn’t make it true.

WallyDancre · 05/02/2020 20:53

I heard a rumour that 90% of people are idiots.

jasjas1973 · 05/02/2020 22:09

Well, whatever the rumours, logically, why is China quarantine 70m people for something which we are told time and time again is less serious or contagious than seasonal flu?
Countries and govts are behaving as if this was the Black death, isolation units, ships not allowed to dock.....

Corona virus first identified end of December, thought to have been circulating for weeks earlier.

Lweji · 05/02/2020 23:57

By whom?

All epidemics or outbreaks start fairly slowly until they reach enough people.
The new coronavirus virus could have vanished in those few first weeks, but it seems we were unlucky that it hit a busy market and spread fast from there.

There is a rumour that massive rainbow shaded weasels stalk the streets of Birmingham on a leap year

jasjas1973 · 06/02/2020 07:34

News items, govt spokespersons from around the world, telling us mortality rate is lower than flu and less contagious?

We do not know this virus originated from a market or when, nor can we believe the true infection & mortality rates.
China has a long and inglorious record of lying and denials, from state murder and concentration camps to infectious diseases.

UK scientists said when the Chinese were stating just a handful of cases, the true figure would be at least 1800 given the rate of spread outside of China.

UK Govt has just told ALL NHS trusts to have isolation units available.

Saylwhat · 06/02/2020 07:40

But apart from the two who were in the hotel in York, nobody else has it in England right?

I also don't get the hysteria where China is shutting down over a goddamned flu.

Saylwhat · 06/02/2020 07:41

What they're telling us about the virus doesn't seem to justify the extreme measures being taken. I dunnae unnerstand!

Saylwhat · 06/02/2020 07:44

How much more lethal is it than your usual flu? I know they said death rate at 2%, but what is the flu death rate?

Jesz · 06/02/2020 07:45

About 3 people have been confirmed with it in the UK, don't worry.

Saylwhat · 06/02/2020 07:46

UK Govt has just told ALL NHS trusts to have isolation units available.

My local hospital has one isolation unit in A&E. One.

Saylwhat · 06/02/2020 07:46

Oh, who is the third?

Yeahnah2020 · 06/02/2020 08:05

If this isn’t a wind up (I’m not convinced) just go and get a blood test and dial down the drama 🤣

Oulu · 06/02/2020 08:18

why is China quarantine 70m people for something which we are told time and time again is less serious or contagious than seasonal flu?

Because seasonal flu is itself serious and kills a lot of people?

Saylwhat · 06/02/2020 08:26

Because seasonal flu is itself serious and kills a lot of people?

You don't hear of countries shutting down though? Sorry guys - we've a dose of the flu here - you can't come in. Britain is telling its 30k citizens to get out of China asap. People being quarantined for 2 weeks?

Maybe it's far more lethal than flu.

SoupDragon · 06/02/2020 08:38

This is an unknown virus with no current vaccine which appears to be spreading quickly. Not hard to understand, surely?

Lweji · 06/02/2020 08:44

Plus it's on top of the flu. Not an alternative.
Imagine the currently stretched services with twice the hospitalised people and twice the dead, at least.
At least because no vaccine, so most people aren't immune.

Saylwhat · 06/02/2020 08:52

Most people are not vaccinated against flu in Britain (or anywhere). Pregnant, over 65 or have an underlying condition - you'll be vaccinated. That's about it in England I think.

I think it's because the mortality rate is actually very high compared to flu (which is bad enough in itself).

Odds are, if I got this coronavirus, I'd be a goner. I'd almost certainly develop pneumonia, probably need life support I guess. I suppose when I think about it, we can't have 100's or 1000's of people needing treatment for pneumonia or life support all at once. So I think it is a concern probably if it catches hold here. In fairness the NHS can't cope as it is.
