Conflict in the Middle East

Trump address to the nation this evening - ground assault or ‘mission accomplished’?

ThinkAboutItTomorrow · 01/04/2026 12:36

The mood music seems to be priming for a mission accomplished withdrawal announcement doesn’t it?
Though with the troop build up I could imagine this is a distraction ploy and he’ll actually announce a ground assault on an island in Hormuz.

crazy that it’s so unpredictable.

if it’s ‘mission accomplished’ what will the rest of the world do to clear up his mess? Agree a toll with Iran for the use of Hormuz? Can’t see any appetite for military force to clear it.

so frustrating Trump feels no obligation to clear up the mess he’s made. It’s hard to know and scary to imagine where this leaves international relations.

I suspect a bit of war stuff, but my worry is it will really be something else. Announcing he is going to pack SCOTUS is my thought. That would practically be an "enabling act" for him.

Something to do with Judges anyway. One just stopped his ballroom. And he cares more about his ballroom than anything else.

TomeTome · 01/04/2026 13:00

Time to move closer to Europe and let the Americans stew in their own juice.

i can’t have been the only one listening to the Canadian and Spanish leaders this year and thinking, “that’s who I’d like us to be”.

I hope he happily leaves us to clear up his mess because he is no help at all.

trumpisruin · 01/04/2026 13:07

Is that the ballroom with the nuclear bunker underneath it @RedTagAlan ?😬🥴

RudolphTheReindeer · 01/04/2026 13:21

The news this morning said he's planning to withdraw in 2-3 weeks.

I read than and then wondered if he is trying to lull Iran into a false sense of security that the war will end, when his real intentions are the opposite. I'm on the fence right now on what I think will be announced.

Spaghettea · 01/04/2026 13:30

Ground assault.
Off on rant about ballroom
Random tangent about heaven knows what.

ThinkAboutItTomorrow · 01/04/2026 14:42

its set up as an important update on Iran (which obviously doesn’t mean it won’t end up about the ballroom) so feels like it’ll be more about that.
stock markets seem to think it’s a victory and exit declaration

Could it be he's announcing he's leaving NATO due to the Iran situation.

Blimms · 01/04/2026 15:02

Because I am such a geek, I sometimes look at FlightRadar. There were 8 US airforce planes going to and from the Middle East, they were the kind that carry military personnel. That might hint at something.

I made up some Bingo cards for posters on a thread I am on. Want me to share here ?

Some squares are more on the fun side.

I think they also use charter companies for actual troops ?

hahabahbag · 01/04/2026 15:43

@Blimmsthey more likely to be moving equipment around, personnel are usually on chartered standard planes (or if it’s British troops, normal scheduled flights, low cost airlines ideallyGrin)

FernandoSor · 01/04/2026 15:44

Well, he said it would be done in 2-3 weeks last night (oil price drops, Wall St rallies), tonight he will announce a ground assault (oil prices rises, Wall St drops). Rinse and repeat. With the emphasis on rinse.

It's hilarious that in the UK we lock up journalists for running pump-and-dump schemes on penny stocks, and anyone who works for a corporate has mandatory training that puts the fear of god into you about what will happen if there is even the slightest sniff of insider trading. Yet here we see the president doing it in plain sight, with the entire world economy, with absolutely zero repercussions.

hahabahbag · 01/04/2026 15:45

I actually suspect the address will be to float about that rocket going to the moon and perhaps claiming the moon for the USA

Ah okay, that makes sense actually.

Wouldn't be hugely surprised at this one. Putin must be absolutely thrilled with himself.

I think I'll catch the highlights after, I have no desire to listen to 60 minutes of incoherent, paranoid, self congratulatory ramblings .

BerthaPotts · 01/04/2026 16:34

I read that some of Trump's aides have disclosed he doesn't really have a plan and is just sort of improvising as he goes along.

Does Congress not have to vote over such a big decision?

TracyLords · 01/04/2026 16:36

Trump is reminding me of that scene in train spotting where begbie throws a glass in the pub

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 01/04/2026 16:38

He probably hasn't decided yet himself what the announcement is going to be, so who knows... will probably depend on his mood at the time and who manages to get in his ear shortly before the announcement?!

Yep, he’s now invading the moon. Should only take 4 weeks.

Just checked and it says a two thirds majority in Senate or an act of Congress have to vote on it.

But when has the constitution ever got in his way before.

That is also true.

ThinkAboutItTomorrow · 01/04/2026 17:42

starting to think the timing -9pm- makes ground assault more likely. Leaving nato or declaring victory feel like daytime announcements. And surely he’d want the market bounce from ‘victory’ in the day?

i'm morbidly curious in what trump has to say but equally pleased that in the case of where i live (canada) we seem to be moving forward in a more resilient manner.
love the going low contact/grey rock approach to this frankly strange president.
i hope all contracts for their military kit gets cancelled asap by everyone.
