Conflict in the Middle East

Trump address to the nation this evening - ground assault or ‘mission accomplished’?

The mood music seems to be priming for a mission accomplished withdrawal announcement doesn’t it?
Though with the troop build up I could imagine this is a distraction ploy and he’ll actually announce a ground assault on an island in Hormuz.

crazy that it’s so unpredictable.

if it’s ‘mission accomplished’ what will the rest of the world do to clear up his mess? Agree a toll with Iran for the use of Hormuz? Can’t see any appetite for military force to clear it.

so frustrating Trump feels no obligation to clear up the mess he’s made. It’s hard to know and scary to imagine where this leaves international relations.

Yes I caught that! At least he didn't keep going on any longer. None the wiser what he will do next, perhaps even he doesn't know.

The speech is a game to bring down oil prices @TooBigForMyBoots

They hit an all time high in the US yesterday ( U.K. time that is )

As it is prices have just dropped

But what the hell is Israel doing. Are they going to stop if and when the US do?
Will they leave Lebanon ?

Twiglets1 · 02/04/2026 07:27

He didn't really have anything new to say did he?

Re Israel, they will have to stop at the same time Trump does as that will be part of the deal presumably.

They might be allowed to carry on fighting Lebanon only, but I doubt it. On the 26th March I made a post about Tehran's conditions for a ceasefire which include an end to all attacks and assassinations, compensation for war damages, and a halt to fighting across all fronts – including between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Not sure they will get all their demands but who knows.

He really is making our leadership here look incredibly competent in comparison.

Americans who voted for him must have been lobotomised. I can’t think of another explanation for why they thought he and his band of sychophants are capable of making America great in any way, shape or form. He’s completely destroying their global standing.

Trump following Father Ted's approach to sorting out a problem.

He has always shone a light on the greatest democracy in the world and demonstrated that it is anything but.

His 'Big announcement' has resulted in more confusion than clarity. It really was a load of shite.

I did enjoy reading @GentleSheep summary of it 😄. You summed it up quite well.

Has anyone seen the latest? He is now threatening to stop supplying weapons to Ukraine if Nato do not help to open the SOH. Putin will be pleased.

He has always shone a light on the greatest democracy in the world and demonstrated that it is anything but.

People were able to look away from all the qualities that made him wholly unfit for office and dangerous. They had enough evidence from his first term.

Some gave the COL crisis as the reason, others gave various ideological reasons.

Whichever the case, to vote for him was irresponsible in the extreme.

Maggiethecat · 02/04/2026 09:27

Did anyone see that he attended the Scotus hearing on the birthright matter?

Simply to try to intimidate the justices.

This is the man that Americans voted for.

I would say Israel will carry on clearing out as much of Hezbollah as they can from Beirut. Seems like they have tunnels and weapons there as well, it really is awful what the local Lebanese population are having to endure firstly from having terrorists in their midst and then having to deal with being made homeless and all the stress that entails. I expect Israel will carry on for as long as possible, potentially even after the US withdraws (which we can't even see on the horizon for now). Trump's 2-3 weeks doesn't reassure me much.

I continue to listen to military commentators (who pretty much think Trump isn't in anything like the good position he says he's in) to try to get some insight.

LOL thanks! It was the only way to stay remotely sane listening to that man and not throwing stuff at my screen! 😂
