Conflict in the Middle East

Israeli military’s own data indicates civilian death rate of 83% in Gaza war

Utterly shocking, an astonishingly high civillian death toll. As of May this year only 8,900 fighters were killed.

That apparent ratio of civilians to combatants among the dead is extremely high for modern warfare, even compared with conflicts notorious for indiscriminate killing, including the Syrian and Sudanese civil wars.

I can't see a post that would give me, a non specialist, enough evidence to make that judgement no. And I doubt that anyone here, also non specialists, can either. Its a funny thing about this conflict, suddenly everyone's an expert in things they actually know nothing about.

Surely with even the most basic grasp of mathematics one could work out that the civilian to terrorist death ratio must be phenomenally high.

Maybe if posters engaged when presented with facts instead of just ignoring the posts they wouldn't have to be repeated.

You don't control posters' posting habits, unless they contravene talk guidelines.

Interesting that when these facts are presented, some users don’t have much of a substantive response.

Dangermoo : I really do wish posters would stop spamming the threads, with repetitive information. It's almost like we are being programmed to comply.

Me : Maybe if posters engaged when presented with facts instead of just ignoring the posts they wouldn't have to be repeated.

That is different to stating how posters should respond and to whom. The lengthy copying and pasting, appears constantly. Maybe that's why certain posts, go unanswered.

It's pointless providing substantial responses, to pre-generated schpiel.

Are you saying it’s pointless to provide substantial responses to verified facts- the facts in question being the international law Israel is currently breaking? 🤯

notimagain · 22/08/2025 12:34

Well as far as the IDF and individual engagements go nobody here has verfiable facts, so it's impossible to establish for example proportionality of their action, so I'm not sure what there is to discuss at that level.

The broader action of the Israeli government is another matter.

And to go back to the OP... even before this thread started those with Palestinian sympathies in this Guardian reading household thought the Guardian headline was highly missleading, perhaps deliberately so...shame that original topic of debate got lost in the fog of war crimes.

I won't take anything from the Guardian. It's a constant source of bias.

There has to be a way of taking the thread away from its focus- the disproportionate deaths of civilians.
Blame the source of the information
say its Hamas propaganda
provide alternative figures from Israel that don’t make sense

now it’s blaming posters about going on about the purpose of the thread

And blaming all and any sources as biased.

Wedonttalkaboutboris · 22/08/2025 13:06

Novara Media’s analysis of UK progressive newspapers: the Guardian, the Independent, and the Mirror- reveals a consistent bias favouring Israeli narratives in their coverage of the Gaza conflict between October 2023 and March 2024. Despite the Guardian’s relatively more balanced approach, all three outlets disproportionately highlighted Israeli experiences and downplayed Palestinian suffering.

A Novara Media analysis of the Guardian, the Independent and the Mirror found that all three disproportionately favoured Israel. Nadine Talaat, Sebastian Shehadi and Chiri Choukeir report.

I do find it's a consistent theme on these threads .

I find it fascinating that the word of the IDF is never questioned by some posters who we know are proven liars .

Novara Media and 'analysis' in the same sentence 😆 I mean of course they found pro-Israel bias. Anyone could have told you that. I mean, seriously, why would anyone waste their time engaging with this.

As you well know, its not that simple. All those organisations have been found to be credulous when assessing evidence coming from Hamas. Them saying something is not evidence and of course you need expert knowledge to assess it. This thread started with somone saying that because the data says that 17% of those killed are known to the Israelis as militants the remainder are civilians. We are all expert enough to see that is not what the data shows, without further evidence.

Do you live in Israel? In the UK and Europe these sources are highly respected and often quoted by quality newspapers and governments.

The only people who have disputed the sources and their evidence is Israel.

*Israel who showed a video of Hamas looting and shooting at people which was proven to be a gang in the employ of Israel (oops)
*Israel who executed paramedics and buried their ambulances in the middle of the night and then claimed they were Hamas and their lights weren’t on until it turned out one of the victims had a video camera on (ooops - we will investigate then silence)
*Israel who shared a document in arabic to show a murdered journalist was Hamas that was dated when the guy was 10 years old
*Israel who shared a photo of a document on a wall from inside a hospital to show it was Hamas cell which turned out to be the days of the week in arabic, oh and their photo of where they found munitions in an operational hospital was inside an MRI machine - like Hamas are not the smartest but who would hide guns in a giant magnet!

So many lies - almost like the country invests millions in spinning the war!

I found that one entertaining, as well. Yeah, I'm really going to consent to giving my data to New Arab News, which finds its funds from Qatar!

Some interesting stuff on Wikipedia - obviously as it is editable you should always look at the sources they link! There are details of lies from the IDF and Hamas.

Why do you ask if I live in Israel? Do you think Israel diesn't have access to the internet and free media? Are Israeli's incapable of research and critical thinking? What exactly are you implying?

No these sources are not highly respected and haven't been for a long time. Amnesty is a shadow of its former self (I used to be very active in Amnesty, my mother was a branch chair for several decades) and as for the UN, problems with UN agencies have been documented for a while.

It is not true that the only people who question them are Israel. An easily verifiable false statement. That is either a lie or a statement made out of ignorance. I would suggest you should question all sources, its part of critical thinking.

Wedonttalkaboutboris · 22/08/2025 13:27

When I’ve asked people previously what sources they do consider reliable they’ve either refused to answer my question or they’ve said the IDF 🤷‍♀️
