"And who is responsible for the intractably deep division that brought this situation into being in the first place? The Zionists who came up with the idea of Israel? The British who sponsored them? The UN who made it happen? The Israelis for going above and beyond and colonising territory in 1967 that wasn't intended for them even according to the partition plan? I don't know, but it's certainly not the Palestinians, who had a perfectly well functioning homeland until someone thought it would be a great idea to come along and kick them out of most of it."
They didn't have a state, there was no state called Palestine, just as there was no Israel. People didn't refer to themselves as Palestinian, they were various people living in the area. Therefore the original proposal was for an Arab and a Jewish state.
Maybe if they accepted a 2 state solution at the beginning instead of not wanting Israel to exist then it might have worked.
Imagine both people's having their own state.
Other countries during those years have changed borders, names, etc but the wish to wipe out Israel dominated rather the wish to have a life so much better for the Arabs living in the area.
