Gary Lineker - he really had to go and a warning t against virtue signalling

Maybe Gary Lineker's departure acts as a warning for this not acquainted with history to go around randomly reposting pro Palestinian links though I suspect he is not the only one. In a way it is a sad demise to a career but an absolutely necessary one and a timely warning that a proportion of P Palestinian supporters are anti semites.

for to say I didn't like the Gaurdian 's take that the BBC were looking to sack Gary anyway and he just have them an excuse.

When Boris Johnson said women wearing Burqas look like letter boxes he became so popular he didn't lose his job - he got the top job. And attacks on Muslim women escalated and no one batted an eyelid.
While I think Lineker was in the wrong in this instance it highlights once again who is in charge in the UK.

Who is in charge?

Must confess - I am curious too.

Who is in charge?

I think the idea is gaining two separate threads, one is GL is thick so he shouldn’t speak about things he doesn’t understand, and the other is GL isn’t thick so he MUST have known all about the history and how rats have a deeper meaning and are antisemitic.

its all nonsense really. All that’s happened is a man posted something that had undesirable content on it, he apologised and left/lost his job as a result, but he was finishing soon anyway and most people agree with him that the behaviour of Israeli. Gaza is awful and that saying nothing is turning a blind eye to evil.

You were saying?

Gary Lineker could face a police investigation over the anti-Semitic Instagram post that prompted his BBC exit, Telegraph Sport understands.

Officers from Scotland Yard visited at least one complainant who told them she suffered significant distress over the social media post last week.

No decision has been made yet on whether a police investigation will be launched but officers suggested to one family a crime reference number will be issued.

What an utter waste of police time - if we had decent coppers then this would be nicked in the bud from the off. The world's gone mad.

For once, we agree.

Absolutely bonkers.

3 of us agree!

Luddite26 · 20/05/2025 18:01

People who happily ignore Islamaphobia to get their man in no 10 to get their Brexit done. People who are happy to use and share rhetoric to stir up the mob for their own ends.

Toootss · 20/05/2025 18:03

The police don’t make the law -the Gov do so write to your mp. The police can’t decide not to investigate even if they think it’s a waste of time.

Who are these "people" of which you speak?

TomeTome · 20/05/2025 19:01

I think the police do choose not to invest things all the time, but regardless I agree with previous posters this would be a waste of time. It’s designed to make people scared to speak which is a shame because we favour free speech in the uk.

EasyTouch · 20/05/2025 19:30

Sorry, but there are a lot of duncebats who have successful podcasts.

Gary Lineker is blessed that he lives in a dumbed down nation where being able to project in the media and string sentences together may fool the average person into thinking that he has above average intelligence.

In all the decades he has been around, I have never met ANYBODY who rates Lineker as "witty" or quotable.

He's a British footballer who had enough about him to not have his
incontinent cheating publicly exposed and is fairly articulate.
But he is not above average in intelligence or wit for a non Brit non ex or current footballer.

If he was above average in wit, he would be able to defend Gazans without using his escalating anti Semitism that has got him to this point.

Only an idiot provides any type of link on the internet without reading it and confirming its provenance whilst gleaning some of the other points of view of the original poster to see where their head is at.

Couldn't be me losing a cushy sit down gig for being a racist fool when all he had to do was repeat the rhetoric that Gazans are in a very dangerous and desperate situation.

Which they objectively are. If he was intelligent, he would be able to use that fact as a premise as to if Israel should give priority to that reality whilst defending herself from a Hamas that is root and branch embedded in Gaza on every imagined social, financial and institutional level in Gaza. Thus illuminating the rock and hardplace reality for the conscious Gazan prior and likely after this war.

Instead, he chose to go down that thousands year old anti Jew road.

TomeTome · 20/05/2025 20:26

@EasyTouch wow what a lot of words to say so very little. Do you honestly think that British people are stupid? If so compared to who?

Morningsleepin · 20/05/2025 21:50

Simplestars · 19/05/2025 06:15

100% this.
GL has the courage to call a GENOCIDE A GENOCIDE.
Hope the world leaders can hang there heads in shame for allowing this to happen.

Yeap

Sleeplessinmetal · 20/05/2025 22:47

History will judge but it won’t be Gary Liniker

mids2019 · 21/05/2025 06:04

If Gary wasn't punished we give a green light to anti semitism. This cannot be.

My daughter's learn about the holocaust. The holocaust was partly caused by a sustained virulent racist media campaign by the Nazis including vile cartoons portraying Jews as vermin. Any student of history in this country knows why you cannot, absolutely cannot, have a rat in a reported tweet. Many public figures have gone for a lot less.

@Simplestars I doubt very much whether anyone on here fears "the name anti-Semite more than a child's soul lost to the night" (sic).
It is perfectly possible to want an end to this horrific conflict and be watchful of racism on social media, and condemn those who would use such tropes.
If you are critical of Gary Lineker's sm views, it doesn't mean that you support Netanyahu.

What Jews? They do not all share a brain. My Jewish friends are very much calling out the genocide and still experiencing growing antisemitism.

TizerorFizz · 21/05/2025 08:21

@Seagullsandsausagerolls I’m not sure leading Jewish people in our society have called out what’s happened in Gaza. Why is Gary Lineker doing it? Maybe others should step up? I believe in the two state solution but we have many prominent Jewish people who have remained silent. I am troubled by that. I do want everyone to be safe and respected and I abhor the attack by Hamas and all persecution. Again, two wrongs don’t make a right.

At least the government has become more vocal and is recognising some elements in the Israeli government are not the sort of people we want to associate with.

Stripes56 · 21/05/2025 08:29

Not sure why poster are so bothered by GL’s intelligence. It’s bizarre.

He should have been more careful about what he posts. Maybe he should face criminal consequences. That’s for the police to decide.

However - the biggest enabler of antisemitism is surely what Netanyahu’s government and the IDF are doing- painful as that may be to acknowledge. It awful to read about how hard it is for Jewish communities at present. To need guards for schools or a synagogue, to not be able to demonstrate your faith is dreadful.

Do GL actions add to this - possibly, but not substantially? I am glad he has apologised and resigned.

Kindly, please don't use phrases like "the Jews" like they're a homogeneous group. That is dehumanising and othering. Many Jewish people do not agree at all with the actions of the Israeli state, and Jewish does not = Israeli or Zionist. The phrase you are looking for here would be "what does the Israeli state believe the Gaza residents to be...'

I refer to those who can't call what is happening in Gaza a GENOCIDE for fear of being called antisemitic.
I.e The politicians and a like.

It is a Genocide being committed by the Israeli government.

Jewish schools and places of worship needed security long before Netanyahu embarked on his campaign of destruction.
