Conflict in the Middle East
SharonEllis · 19/12/2024 19:53

I'm not worked up or trying to make a point. Just trying to understand. Strange as one minute your point was 'central to the conflict', now it can't be explained and doesn't matter at all?

I saw this image on social media today which I thought was relevant to this thread.

Thanks for this. Hadn’t seen it tho there are similar graphs in the report. It proofs how they’re using water as a weapon. Something that is required to survive they’re using it to commit genocide

MSF pointed out something similar in a report today as well as how Israel is not allowing AID in

They've been using water as a weapon against Palestinians for decades. But now obviously it's at a catastrophic level in Gaza as it's part of a genocidal effort.

unclemtty · 19/12/2024 22:39

I just can't get my head around how Isreal are able to get away with this genocide, it's so well documented and in the open.

Don't understand how people could become so monstrous. I get that they have suffered in
the past, is it this generational trauma that has bourne out to destroy their neighbours, another's life or children just doesn't mean anything?

This is a fascinating read from an Israeli journalist on the topic.

Israeli Journalist Gideon Levy on the Killing of Gaza

The dissident Israeli journalist on how relentless dehumanization of Palestinians has led to the obliteration of Gaza, and how the U.S. could have stopped it anytime.

@unclemtty Naomi Klein has written about the intergenerational trauma side in her book Doppelganger. I think she's written articles elsewhere too which might be worth a Google if you're interested and don't want to buy the book.

What do you mean Hamas isn't the army? Hamas has an armed wing. Hamas 'combatants' have been attacking Israel before, on and after 7 October. If it wasn't an 'army' that was attacking Israel then it was just Palestinian civilians attacking Israel. Which is it? I agree its central to this conflict.

I thought Hamas were a terrorist organisation? Surely they can't be an army and terrorists at the same time?

Hamas are terrorists who commit heinous crimes.

IDF are an army who commit heinous crimes.

The semantics is pretty irrelevant to the victims of those crimes.

Apparently it was 'central to the conflict' so you'd think it was more than semantics but I guess we'll never know.

I made a thread about this article. This man is really remarkable.

Yes because the people of Gaza have no defence from the IDF which is why mainly civilians are dying.

Do you finally understand the point now?

Not at all, because noone can be bothered to explain it!

Your lack of understanding is genuinely baffling.

The IDF is bombing a defenceless civilian population. What don't you understand?

Also the thread is about Israel / IDF preventing access to the water to these civilians.

I've been watching what's been going on this week open mouthed. The cruelty is insane. Poor Palestinians.

ararara · 23/12/2024 20:47

I really don't get the cognitive dissonance from some posters. Genuinely. So baffling.

You don't get that "people might have a psychological state of discomfort that occurs when they hold conflicting beliefs, attitudes, or values."

clearly I do or I wouldn't have used the phrase. Confused

Just outright disgusted by some of the minimisation that goes on.

It's hard for normal people to understand how some people can allegedly care about certain people but not at all about others.

It's a very common feature on these boards and is not a complex concept.

I think racism and bigotry has a lot to do with it. I realised very early on how the lives of Palestinians just don't matter to a lot of people (both on Mumsnet and in general). It was very depressing witness people tie themselves into knots to justify the war crimes committed in Gaza. And outside Gaza, too. The incident in the West Bank where the IDF tied an injured man onto a jeep to use as a human shield, for example.

Maybe he was just going for a fun spin.

That was bizarre.

Other low points include people justifying the murder of premature neonates (a crime that may he happening again for at least the third time as I speak) and posters suggesting that children may be terrorists and so it's reasonable to kill them en masse.

Hyperquiet · 23/12/2024 23:48

They've been committing genocide for ages.

The most harrowing account sticks with me: the Israeli soldier that shot an infant in a Mother's arms because he was annoyed at the baby's crying.

Souless.
