This will really put the allies to test, will our government and other EU countries who are allies to Israel, arrest Netanyahu and Gallant if they travel there?

It has been a long time coming and they absolutely are worthy of being arrested for their war crimes.

ICC issues arrest warrants for Netanyahu, Gallant and Hamas commander

Judges found there were “reasonable grounds” they bore "criminal responsibility" for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity.

This will be an enormous blow to Israel, for so long Netanyahu thought he could continue to act without any repercussions but no! He cannot.

What does this mean for our government? Will they now be considered complicit in the war crimes carried out by Israel?

It's an interesting development. How do international arrest warrants actually work? Who gets to do the arresting and can it happen anywhere or only if the person travels outside their own country? I've never really given much thought to the mechanics of it.

Chowtime · 21/11/2024 12:32

It doesn't really change anything for the British government. Nutenyahou simply won't visit any country that is obliged to hand him over to ICC.

Good questions, has there been a similar example in recent times?

This will be a real litmus test for our government. Will they uphold the law and confirm they will comply with the arrest warrants or not.

Nothing will change. Double standards and hypocrisy. The same rules don't apply to us when we commit crimes.

Kakeandkake · 21/11/2024 12:37

Will it not have any impact on arms exports at the least?

Yeah you need them to be in a country that will hand them over. I think al-Bashir had about 10 years between the warrant being issued and Sudan deciding to hand him over.

Dulra · 21/11/2024 12:40

He won't travel anywhere that are likely to arrest him. I would imagine he wouldn't put his allies in an awkward position by travelling to their nations

Dulra · 21/11/2024 12:41

There are arrest warrants against Putin for over a year now

That includes the UK, France and Germany. There's a 124 member states in total.

He has a lot of enemies. He might be turned over by someone closer to home eventually.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 21/11/2024 12:43

Yeah, it's easy enough not to travel.

In theory, could he be arrested in Israel if he was booted out of power and the new regime wasn't supportive of him?

Kakeandkake · 21/11/2024 12:43

It's predictable that he won't travel to any of these countries for fear of arrest, but the main question is how will this affect the policies of the allies?

Meaning how will it affect their support (which has been waning for some recently) for the war and the Netanyahu government?

At last! It's been a long time coming! Our Government now need to stop selling any military equipment at all, you don't sell arms to a criminal. And it's time for other sanctions too.

It won't.

Chowtime · 21/11/2024 12:46

It won't.

The reason for the warrants are very serious crimes. You can't say for sure that it won't when it includes "deliberate attacks on civilians, and the use of starvation as a weapon of war, as well as extermination and murder."

Israeli Government response is out. It's exactly what you'd expect. The ICC is anti semitic apparently. They're pathetic.

EasterIssland · 21/11/2024 12:50

About time! I hope this is used for governments to stop providing weapons to Israel

Chowtime · 21/11/2024 12:51

I'm confused. Are there people on this thread that think we should make Israel our enemy?

Edited

And Ben Gvir has said called for the annexation of the entire West bank in response. It is beyond me why at the minimum he hasn't been sanctioned by our government yet. He is a raving dangerous lunatic.

I'd imagine this is possible in theory.

I mentioned al-Bashir upthread and I believe he was handed over once he was out of power and Sudan decided they would follow the warrant. They didn't have to, they aren't an ICC member. Neither is Israel.

Any government engagement, it with reasonable suspicion that they are engaging in genocide or crimes against humanity is my energy. They must certainly aren't an ally that we should be providing with weapons to continue causing death in any event.
