This will really put the allies to test, will our government and other EU countries who are allies to Israel, arrest Netanyahu and Gallant if they travel there?

It has been a long time coming and they absolutely are worthy of being arrested for their war crimes.

ICC issues arrest warrants for Netanyahu, Gallant and Hamas commander

Judges found there were “reasonable grounds” they bore "criminal responsibility" for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Ordinary Palestinians in Gaza have also welcomed the announcement. Muhammad Ali, a 40-year old man displaced from Gaza City and currently in the central area of Deir al-Balah, said:
"We have been terrorised, starved, had our homes destroyed, and lost our children, sons, and loved ones. We welcome this decision, and of course, we hope that the decisions of the ICC will be implemented".
Munira Al-Shami, whose sister was killed by Israeli forces last month, called the ICC decision "justice for tens of thousands of victims, including my sister Wafa".

This is the desired outcome really. That the people effected by the alleged war criminals feel that justice is being served for those lost and those who are suffering at their hands. Hopefully one day we will see them actually arrested and full justice for their victims can be served. I think that for far too long Palestinians have felt like they have been screaming into a void, their suffering and loss unacknowledged by those in power around the world. I hope that this and the ICJs ruling from July has given those effected some glimmer of hope that their lives are important to the world too.

This is great to hear, has Starmer responded yet?

I was wondering about this. Can Israel force an election or is the law different during a war?

I'm not sure, when are the next elections due in Israel?

I looked this up, next election is 27 October 2026. Israel is in a state of emergency as far as I know.

BefuddledCrumble · 22/11/2024 06:26

I'm sorry, but if you think this is going to affect anything then you are wrong.

It's sad but understandable to see the hopeful delusion on this thread.

It will affect nothing in the near future, possibly not even for over a decade.

There are arrest warrants against Putin for over a year now

He hasn't visited anywhere he can be arrested. I imagine Netanyahu won't either.

myheartskipsskipsabeat · 22/11/2024 06:59

Well let's see if Starrmer stops selling arms to Israel if he supports tue ruling that much

I'm confused. Are there people on this thread that think we should make Israel our enemy?

Certainly don’t think we should be supporting them.

Yes it will interesting to see!

Kakeandkake · 22/11/2024 08:20

The response to the ICC arrest warrants has shown a sharp divide between much of the EU and the US.
Starmer will try and play the balancing act without trying to upset the US too much.

Some countries like Belgium have gone further and have called for sanctions against Israel.
I think it's quite likely that in future we will see the court rule that Israel has/is committing genocide, although likely to be too late by the time it does.

I agree with Middle East analyst Mouin Rabbani who tweeted:

"I have consistently stated that the International Criminal Court would never issue an arrest warrant for an Israeli official. I am delighted to have been proven wrong. Almost as delighted as I am by watching Western leaders and politicians take a break from preaching human rights, the rule of law, etc. to the rest of us, to experience a collective thermonuclear meltdown about these developments.
I am particularly amused by the attacks on Karim Khan. I fully agree he should never have been elected ICC Prosecutor. The catch: the only reason he was elected to this office was because of incessant lobbying on his behalf by not only his government, Great Britain, but particularly by two states that are not ICC members: the United States and Israel. They promoted him to protect their interests, he did his very best, but Israel's conduct and an effective campaign to pressure him to fulfil the duties of his office ultimately left him with no alternative."

I'm still surprised that warrants were issued, especially after the threats the judges faced.

Does it mean an immediate change? No, the RAF still flew reconnaissance flights over Gaza yesterday on behalf of the IDF.

However, anyone who continues to facilitate actions that may breach International law are now on full notice.

Scirocco · 22/11/2024 09:39

The people I love who are dead are still dead, the ones who have been tortured or left with life-changing injuries still have those to bear, and we know that more people will join those who have been unjustly killed. The issuing of these warrants gives me a glimmer of hope, though, that at some point in the future, history will remember what was done to innocent people, and who supported it and who chose to look away.

Kakeandkake · 22/11/2024 20:40

Netanyahu must be in shock, he must never have imagined that there might actually be consequences to the genocide he has ordered.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu

No 10 indicates Benjamin Netanyahu faces arrest if he enters UK

Downing Street refuses to comment on the case but says the government will fulfil its "legal obligations".

Do you think they just be allowed to be inflicting a genocide on the Palestinian people?

ScrollingLeaves · 22/11/2024 21:58

Toomanywars · 22/11/2024 06:48

A domestic court process would be required before Mr Netanyahu faced arrest if he set foot in the UK.

What does this mean, please?
Whose domestic court process?

Does that mean the U N can decide what it likes but the U.K. itself would not arrest him if he were to come here unless we had had our own court case finding him guilty first?

PeasfullPerson · 24/11/2024 22:06

This sort of action helps to restore my faith in whatever humanity is meant to be.

I think they need to be careful about what they say @ScrollingLeaves and that’s all there is to the fluffy words around the backing of the arrest warrant. That’s my take on it anyway.

username358 · 24/11/2024 22:15

A US Senator Lindsey Graham, has threatened to sanction America’s allies if they try to enforce the warrants:

“To any ally—Canada, Britain, Germany, France—if you try to help the ICC, we’re going to sanction you.The US “should crush [their] economy, because we’re next,”

PeasfullPerson · 24/11/2024 22:16

We need to make some better friends.
