Interesting situation: side by side placement of the flags.

It’s the bit, should a person on stage start arguing with the crowd? Should members of the audience object to flags on stage?

Venue says Paul Currie will not be invited back after allegations he verbally abused man who objected to Palestinian flag

In the end it wasn’t about flags. An Israeli was threatened by the performer and the crowd and had to leave the theatre. Jews used to feel that this was a safe country. Now we have non-Jewish friends offering us sanctuary if we need it and we are threatened in the street , on campus and in theatres. There is a difference between supporting Ukraine and supporting terrorists. How would you expect the government to react if your loved ones were massacred at Glastonbury?

I was shocked by this story and hope it's the end of PCs career. But unfortunately I don't think it'll happen.

Scirocco · 14/02/2024 09:47

I don't think the main issue with this was the flags. A bigger issue was the verbal abuse and mob mentality directed towards members of the public. It's not ok to incite and lead a crowd in intimidating innocent people.

etmoiandme · 14/02/2024 09:50

He wasn't just arguing with the crowd. He was abusing one member of that crowd. The side by side placement of flags isn't the story here but it's "interesting" that you think it is.

etmoiandme · 14/02/2024 09:52

If that had been a Russian citizen, you can bet they wouldn't have suffered the same indignity from PC as this gentleman did.

Comedycook · 14/02/2024 10:05

It's like 1930s Germany

Sausagenbacon · 14/02/2024 10:11

I was listening Beyond Belief ' on r4. About Faith and comedy. Comedy was framed as a vehicle of political commentary, nothing mentioned about the point of comedy is to be funny . So this is where it ends, a 'comedian' thinking it's appropriate to do this.

Dulra · 14/02/2024 10:41

I have heard about this "comedian" before, he does not come across as a particularly pleasant character and I am not surprised he has embroiled himself in this. I am disappointed he is getting so much publicity because of it. I think the real issue and concerning piece is that the crowd went with him to the point that people were hounded into leaving. That is extremely concerning and I can understand how scared jews in London must feel as a result. It didn't seem to take much to turn on them. Unfortunately in those highly charged situations it can be very difficult to push against the crowd but I am hoping people did manage to film some of them and they can be dealt with. I am sure the theatre has a record of everyone that attended.

There is a difference between supporting Ukraine and supporting terrorists. @RocknrollstarSupporting Palestine does not equate to supporting terrorists, that needs to be clear

So by your definition all Palestinians are terrorists?

I actually feel heart broken that “my loved one” are being bombed non stop with no safety in their own land.

I agree I don’t think the performer should have got into an argument with members of the audience. I don’t believe it should have reached that level.

That clearly was the starting point for the argument.

The person was quoted as saying that they found the Palestinian flag offensive.

It won’t end his career. He’ll be even more successful but with a particular niche audience as he will frame himself as a victim.

Sausagenbacon · 14/02/2024 11:00

Yes.

inkworks273 · 14/02/2024 11:01

What reason would someone have to object to the display of the Palestinian flag?

SouthDubMum · 14/02/2024 11:01

Ironic since Russia backed the Hamas led attacks.

Maybe your brother/cousin/friend was just murdered by them?

And they STILL want to murder you.

Where was that quoted? I haven't seen that anywhere. I just saw that the Israeli guy said, when it was demanded of him, that he had thought the show was enjoyable until the Palestinian flag was brought out.

You can't imagine why a Jewish person sitting in a crowd of people clapping and/or cheering for the Palestinian flag would feel threatened?

inkworks273 · 14/02/2024 11:10

@Comedycook The person couldn't have felt that threatened considering they were the one making a fuss about it being displayed.

I don't know if they felt threatened or not.

But I would have. Is that ok with you?

They weren't making a fuss. He was picked on by the (so-called) comedian and asked why he didn't stand up and give an ovation.

No, that's not what happened. The "comedian" demanded an answer from the Israeli so he then gave one. He didn't make a fuss. He just sat down quietly.

Murdered by Hamas, it was a Palestinian flag not a Hamas flag. They are very different.
