Catastrophic hunger - 40% of Gaza's population at risk of famine

Being reported by the Guardian:

40% of Gaza’s population is at risk of famine, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency said on Saturday.

“Every day is a struggle for survival, finding food and water,” the UN agency for Palestinian refugees added.

Too sad and completely unnecessary. If only adequate aid, food and water was allowed in.

This is a humanitarian catastrophe.
IDF needs to stop bombing Gaza and let humanitarian aid in to the enclave.
The latest analysis from US defence sources is that eliminating Hamas will take 10 years ( NY times earlier this week)
Whatever they call it- a ceasefire, a truce , a prolonged pause, the just need to get humanitarian aid in there.
There is no time for the IDF to complete their war objectives

Createaplant · 30/12/2023 19:05

@Kindatired it really is distressing especially when you think it is completely avoidable. IDF could so easily let adequate food, water and aid in. 😥

My heart breaks for all the children starving and thirsty. Not to mention all the disease that is setting in.

It seems like a lot of the aid allowed in is co-opted by Hamas though ( who care less about their population than the R wing Israeli govt) ...how do we ensure aid gets to the people who need it? UNRWA also seems to be Hamas now.

Createaplant · 30/12/2023 19:40

@Elichmoon

A very recent EU commissioned report found no evidence aid they were sending was to Palestine was going to Hamas, that includes UNWRA

EU says no Palestinian aid going to Hamas, programmes to continue

It absolutely needs to stop now. even the UK is saying too many civilians are dying. Aid can't get in and be properly distributed without a ceasefire. But the US just sent a load more weapons.

Are you accusing UNRWA of being terrorists?

That's quite a serious allegation, do you have anything to substantiate it?

PurpleChrayne · 30/12/2023 20:06

All that needs to happen is for Hamas to release the hostages and stand down.

They have refused a recent ceasefire, and broke the last one.

I'm not sure how many times this needs to be explained on these threads.

There's a simple solution.

This. That Israeli govt are not allowing anywhere near adequate aid in tells us all you need to know about what they want to achieve.

@LeavesOnTrees Yes, it's a no brainer. They can't keep killing innocent people on this scale.

Cattiwampus · 30/12/2023 20:18

As I said almost two months ago, why would Israel stop?
What will make them, the ineffectual fussing of the UN and the serious tutting of the international community? They’re going to continue through Gaza and disease and starvation will finish what they started.
And everyone will be very sad.
Just like Yemen and Sudan and Syria and Haiti and all the misery in a dozen other countries undergoing humanitarian crises that ‘must not be allowed to happen’ yet somehow does.

Aid is getting in.. hamas are taking it at gunpoint! Even gazans are saying this now: "There is lots of aid, it all goes underground" an elderly man was saying in a video I saw.

@Jingleballs2 or the IDF are attacking the aid convoys: (Guardian yesterday)

UN humanitarian chief 'strongly condemns' attack on aid convoy

The UN’s top aid official has issued a strong condemnation after reports that Israeli troops opened fire on an aid convoy in the Gaza Strip on Thursday.

As we reported earlier, the head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) affairs in Gaza said Israeli soldiers fired at an aid convoy as it returned from northern Gaza along a route designated safe by the Israeli military.

Martin Griffiths, the UN emergency relief coordinator, said the convoy was fired upon despite being “clearly marked” and “its movements coordinated with the parties”.

“Attacks on humanitarian workers are unlawful,” he posted to social media, adding that “the conflict must stop”.

https://www.unrwa.org/newsroom/official-statements/gaza-strip-unrwa-calls-unimpeded-and-safe-access-deliver-much-needed

FROM PHILIPPE LAZZARINI, UNRWA COMMISSIONER GENERAL AMMAN, 29 December 2023 – “Over the past days, several statements from Israeli officials have insinuated or directly held UNRWA responsible for gaps in aid deliveries in the Gaza Strip. These statements were amplified by Israeli and other mainstream and social media, creating a stream of baseless misinformation. “Last week, intense diplomatic efforts led to UNSC resolution 2720, demanding immediate, safe and unhindered delivery of humanitarian assistance at scale directly to the Palestinian civilian population throughout the Gaza Strip. However, the delivery of much needed and urgent aid continues to be limited in quantities and riddled with logistical hurdles. “For the first two weeks of the war, the Israeli Authorities imposed a hermetic siege on the Gaza Strip, banning the entry of all supplies including food, water, medicine and fuel. “The first delivery of humanitarian aid was allowed on 21 October following a complicated and lengthy verification process including re-routing trucks via Israel. Since then, despite some increase in the trucks mostly from Egypt and through the Rafah crossing, it has remained derisory in the face of immense humanitarian needs. These deliveries did not include fuel until 18 November, thus strictly limiting the ability of UNRWA and other humanitarian organisations to operate. “UNRWA called for the opening of other crossings to allow a substantive flow of basic and urgently needed humanitarian supplies. With the opening of the Karem Abu Salem (Kerem Shalom) for entry of trucks into Gaza, the humanitarian community anticipated a much-awaited change in the scale and scope of the convoys, which did not happen. “With severe restrictions on humanitarian access from the Israeli Authorities, the humanitarian operation faces several challenges:

  • Constant bombardment, airstrikes and fighting.
  • Restricted access inside the Strip, especially to the north including crossing Israeli Army checkpoints on the frontlines.
  • A state of despair among the communities showing up at UNRWA warehouses to take supplies or interrupt aid trucks picking food to eat on the spot.
  • A breakdown of law and order, making it difficult for UNRWA to secure the convoys.
  • Long delays at the crossing points of Rafah and Karem Abu Salem.
  • Significant security incidents including near Karem Abu Salem, deeming the area insecure.
  • Unannounced, uncoordinated prisoner and casualty transfers from Israel have brough the operation on Karem Abu Salem to a halt (for hours).
  • Regular cuts in telecommunications including internet and mobile telephone. Since the war began, we have recorded seven cuts, with some up to 72 hours also impacting aid deliveries.
“The recent assessments on hunger in Gaza should not therefore come as a surprise, given very low supplies and the near total collapse of the private sector, including commerce and shops. The entire population of Gaza of 2.2 million people is now almost exclusively dependent on humanitarian assistance including food. “I call on the Israeli Authorities, other parties to the conflict and those with influence over them to safeguard an environment for safe and unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid, and therefore to:
  • Ensure that humanitarian supplies to the Gaza Strip match the overwhelming needs including fuel, food, medicine, water and hygiene material also for those with specific needs like women, adolescent girls and people with disabilities.
  • Adhere to the de-confliction processes and refrain from attacks and fighting on or around crossing points or aid workers and convoys across the Gaza Strip.
  • Open safe and regular routes to access northern Gaza to deliver assistance to people in need and civilian facilities including hospitals like Shifa and others.
  • Remove the ban on the deliveries of commercial supplies to the private sector so that the markets can re-open.
  • Facilitate the delivery of humanitarian assistance with less bureaucratic hurdles, delays and put an end to baseless accusations.
“This is not the time to exchange accusations and promote misinformation. International humanitarian law is very clear: The State of Israel as the occupying power must ensure that the population has access to and is provided with basic services. Likewise, all parties to the conflict must facilitate humanitarian access to all those in need. Food, water, fuel and all humanitarian assistance must never be used as a weapon of war. Aid must never be diverted or politicized. “UNRWA calls once again on the media to verify their reports and cross-check information including statements from Government officials, before publishing information”.

Israel expands offensive as Hamas warns only permanent ceasefire will free hostages. A Hamas official said Thursday that a “partial or temporary cessation of aggression” wouldn’t be enough to free the more than 100 hostages who Israel says remain in captivity in Gaza.

As for the ceasefire the end of November, Israel broke it in several ways starting on Day #1 when they opened fire, on Palestinian civilians in Gaza, killing two and wounding 11. It’s no wonder it eventually broke down completely.

Huh funny. Those blurry screenshots come from a YouTube video that claims it is Hamas hijacking a Red Crescent aid convoy the second it crosses from Rafah but no one on any of the vehicles is armed with any weapons. There is no Hamas insignia.

They look like aid workers to me. Wearing hoodies because it’s winter and a few are holding the sticks with hooks that you use to secure the tarpulin over the load.

The aid has to be accompanied into Gaza because the starvation is so bad that Palestinians are fighting over aid trucks. They aren’t queueing up calmly anymore. Civil order has broken down. So you need a few workers to go with the aid convoy to distribute the food fairly.
