Catastrophic hunger - 40% of Gaza's population at risk of famine

Being reported by the Guardian:

40% of Gaza’s population is at risk of famine, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency said on Saturday.

“Every day is a struggle for survival, finding food and water,” the UN agency for Palestinian refugees added.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/live/2023/dec/30/israel-gaza-war-live-hamas-palestinians-khan-younis-deaths-un-aid-us#:~:text=40%25%20of%20Gaza's%20population%20is,is%20grappling%20with%20catastrophic%20hunger.

Too sad and completely unnecessary. If only adequate aid, food and water was allowed in.

I would warn that this video has upsetting footage of children who are suffering from malnutrition and starvation.
This report is from CNN

If more aid is not allowed in sooner then many more children will suffer the same devestating fate

Statement by Ireland's President Higgins today. Amongst many strong points is this one "Indeed, some of the worst scenes of starvation are being seen in those parts of northern and central Gaza where Israel has declared its military campaign complete."

Apparently a pic of people eating is being spread to “proof” that people are not starving in Gaza. Explanation about this pic https://twitter.com/AbujomaaGaza/status/1767202857793569216

Imagine there are people eating at this in fancy restaurants in Tel Aviv while people starve in Gaza as result of the actions of the government they voted in

@Kindatired I watched the video of the CNN reporter interviewing one of the women who was blocking the aid trucks and it was truly horrible and upsetting to hear what she was saying. No mercy at all and I think she was totally unaware of how cruel she was being.

Kindatired · 12/03/2024 20:21

The contrast in the images between the powerful well padded man carrying his own healthy child is striking.

Netanyahu doesn’t care about war crimes or what other countries think. A certain amount of antisemitism towards the diaspora is good for him- it bolsters support for AIPAC and other pro-Israeli action funding bodies among the wealthy donors of the diaspora and provides a veil of validity for the witch hunts we see in top universities that feed the pipelines of power in the US.
AIPAC works in the corridors of power in the US by means of bipartisan bribes and funding expensive smear campaigns, not by harnessing public opinion.
It’s been very effective as both parties are targeted. We see Biden, a practicing Catholic turning his back on the core humanitarian principles of his own religion to placate those who support Israel.

The way to stop this famine unfolding is to decouple military aid and initiate economic sanctions.
I see however that there are a mere 9000 signatures for on this petition for sanctions by the uk government
I am wondering why this is the case? I am not a UK resident so this is a genuine question

Petition: Introduce economic sanctions on Israel

The UK Government should impose economic sanctions upon Israel in all forms: Trade Embargoes, Tariffs and Import Restrictions, Export Controls, Financial Sanctions (assets of individuals), Investment Restrictions, Technology Transfer Restrictions, Curr...

They haven't crossed the threshold for famine so the quicker aid deliveries are made by air, sea and land the better. Avoiding what is occurring in Sudan in crucial. In Sudan 1 child dies of starvation every 2 hours! Appalling and this needs to be prevented from happening in Gaza. Getting aid in urgently in the right amount is paramount. It can be prevented.

Silence1 · 20/03/2024 16:05

@Mushroomsouptonight If only aid could get into Gaza instead of piling up at Israeli controlled border points You are right it's an appalling situation as is Sudan. What is famine, when is it declared and why are Gaza and Sudan at risk? - BBC News

A Palestinian girl protests against food shortages in Gaza City on 12 March, 2024.

What is famine, when is it declared and why are Gaza and Sudan at risk?

Conflict means millions of people in Gaza and Sudan are severely struggling to access food.

It needs pressure from the US to ensure it gets in quickly.

@Kindatired I think people are scared to put their names to a petition especially if they work in the public sector after the UK Govt banned Israel boycotts.
But I did see 100's of Israeli avocados reduced to clear in my local supermarket a couple of days ago, a place where normally you don't see a single one reduced unless it's so soft you can put your finger through it.
Could just have been an over order mistake or maybe people are finding their consciences pricked eating food grown next door to a starving population by a country who : Israel is provoking famine in Gaza, says EU foreign policy chief – video | World news | The Guardian

Vile, and also an idiot.

She’s an idiot who was involved in peddling the anti vax conspiracy around mmr causing autism.

I actually found that clip quite heartening. The way the audience reacted I mean.

She is a rampant islamophobe. I also, like you, was glad to see the audience jeering and shutting her down.

Kindatired · 21/03/2024 22:50

Sorry for going off topic there. A poster on another related thread was making the point that settlers were being sanctioned and the IDF response to 7/10 was just a bit over the top or words to that effect.

stormy4319trevor · 23/03/2024 13:28

Guterres commented on a long line of aid trucks blocked on Egypt's side of the border. The UK and EU should be more outraged that the aid we send is being blocked, surely.

This thread is wild.

On a forum more or less created entirely for people to express their hatred of Israel this ome is perhaps the most sickening.

There are hungry people in Gaza. Children. And instead of actually objectively assessing that issue, you all are using it as a weapon to express your own fixation.

Let's break down the facts, because I've seen some unevidenced claims here that "Israel isn't letting enough food in" along with some wild claims like "only 10% of the food needed is going in".

Now, I've done some research. The WFP said in previous conflicts that 270g of food per person, per day, was enough provisions to not starve. That's what they delivered to Congo. And I'm not a chef, but I guess that's a cup of rice, a chicken beast and a couple of bits of bread. Fair enough.

Now, if you look at the data on trucks received by the UN in Gaza, which is weighed on entry, then 700g of food, per person, per day had gone into Gaza since the start of the conflict.

So that's more than double what the WFP said was adequate. That's a lot actually. It's about 17.5 slices of bread PER PERSON. Ain't nobody starving on 700g of food a day.

So where are these claims coming from? Of course nobody cares because the goal here is making out Israel to be evil and starving people 🙄 when the goal SHOULD be to get bloody food to kids who need it.

The food is going in.

Plenty of it. So the reality is, it's not being delivered. So start asking the right questions.

Are there enough aid workers?
Are aid workers being given access?
Is safe passage being provided?
The WFP says there's a high risk of looting -who's doing it?
Who is tracking where all this food goes?
Is it being held somewhere?

Maybe if you started asking THOSE questions rather than trying to score points against Israel you might actually achieve something by pressuring the right people.

Well there would be more aid workers if the idf stopped murdering them

I don't know how you could write any of that with a straight face. You must be totally deluded
