I think the fact it’s a country like Bolivia makes it even more shameful that none of the so-called western democracies have spoken out to end the killing of innocent men, women and children.

Spain has been quite forthright?

EasterIssland · 31/10/2023 23:50

Just seen Belgium will not provide weapons to Israel

Not condoning news coming out of Gaza which is quite horrific.

The hypocrisy of Bolivia though. Suits them to sever ties with Israel but maintain ties with Russia and China.

As a Muslim, I feel people don’t care about Muslim deaths. Had more than 8,000 white people been killed over the past three weeks, we’d be seeing more action from our leaders. In fact, the death toll in three weeks would probably have not even reached that number. No one is saying that Bolivia is a county to admire, but I am glad that, finally, one country has taken action, which I hope leads to others doing the same.

On the topic of hypocrisy, the greatest democracies in the world are also full of hypocrisy.

I don't actually understand people taking objection to Sunak stating he hopes Israel wins. What's the alternative? Hamas wins?

My problem to it is what does the word win mean. What does the future look like for the people from Gaza after Israel wins

Starmoonsu · 01/11/2023 17:49

The whole thing is a disgrace.

HeidiInTheBigCity · 01/11/2023 17:58

Rishi needs to go! No debate!

I mean, I WOULD say "I am ashamed to be British" - but not only did I not vote for the spineless, shameless billionnaire - NONE OF US DID (unless you happened to be at a certain party conference)!

Not only do the families of 7/10 victims deserve better
Not only have Palestinians deserved better for some 56 years

WE DESERVE BETTER at this point! We deserve leadership with a functioning moral compass!

Bolivia 🤣

Why is it funny?

Seems to me that Bolivia is the only country with the morals and the guts to stand up for what is right and then you get idiots laughing at them ? No wonder we are in the mess we are in.

I don't know, but their present is/was pretty bleak. If by win it means no Hamas in charge and some sort of hope of less completely hostile relations, maybe better. I hope. Or maybe I'm being naive.

Because telling Netanyahu ‘I want you to win’ means you accept that thousands of innocent people will die and that that isn’t a problem for you; it means you’re the kind of human being that can still sleep at night despite everything we are seeing on our screens. The fact that the leader of our country doesn’t give a shit about such horrific treatment of innocent people should worry us all - I mean, if his conscience can live with that, imagine what else he would be happy to accept.

Very well said. I also agree as a muslim. Just the response to Ukraine v whats happening in Gaza is just astounding.

And if Hamas win, Israel is wiped out.
Believe me I don't like any of this bloodshed in the slightest but Hamas could surrender right now and end this.

@EasterIssland well the obliteration of all Palestinians from the face of that region. Aside from whats happening in Gaza, settlers have been attacking and killing Palestinians without rebuke, similar things have been happening in Jerusalem/ Al Quds.

The Palestinians have long been saying Israel wants them to go to the Mount Sinai desert, that been leaked by an Israeli newspaper this week. Palestinians know of they go to the desert they’ll be stuck there forever.

Simplesimonsdog · 01/11/2023 18:17

@juju99 Not really. Most of social media seems to be slating Israel.
Sadly the fact that fundamentalist Islamic groups seem to be quite happy killing both innocent Muslims and non Muslims indiscriminately all over the world I think many folk have become desensitised to it. Ukraine v Russia is something very close to home and which had (has ?) the potential to turn into a third world war.

I was referring to our leaders. I should have made that clearer.

We deserve leadership with a functioning moral compass!

What does that actually look like?

Generally speaking: I personally expect my leaders to display a "working level" of humanity.

Yes, that includes "not essentially - pretending to speak in my name - giving a carte blanche to foreign leaders whose far-right, racist, ethno-nationalist mission statements are well known" - among other things!

I would expect my PM to call for a ceasefire at this point! Look, if Colombia (you know - the people recently in a war with FARC) does a better job than you, you may sort of be doing this wrong!

I would expect my PM to condemn the atrocities that were committed against Israeli civilians - but I would also expect them to take the "but if you target civilians, that actually happens to be a war crime" angle, rather than the "I hope you win" one towards a state whose government continues to descend into darker, more apocalyptic rhethoric - and not only since 7/10.

But then, I would have long expected my government to display the same committment to humanity here, at home! It is SHAMEFUL that we have people relying on food banks in the UK!

It is shameful that, as a British expat (that is a nice word for "immigrant, but from a nice country, with a professional job"), I actually find myself wanting to apologise for having told people their health care system was "anti-human" - when not only has the NHS been hollowed out almost beyond recognition, but also: there is that small situation where maybe my supposed PM - a.k.a. "billionnaire boy" - seems to be perfectly okay with patients in Gaza undergoing emergency surgery without anaestesia.

Finally, I would expect my government to be a bit more savvy than to fall hook, line, and sinker, for the false dichotomy that is "well, it is either Hamas or your consent to genocide"!

I am NOT a political strategist - but I AM a tech industry professional. So, consider these some of my "functional requirements"!

100% agree. I suspect it's easier for many people to watch mothers weeping over their dead children when they're wearing headscarves 😥
