Check out the NICE guidelines on www.nice.org.uk/nicemedia/pdf/CG062publicinfoWord.doc (extract below)

Ultrasound scans
You should be offered an ultrasound scan between 10 weeks 0 days and 13 weeks 6 days to estimate when your baby is due and to check whether you are expecting more than one baby. This scan may also be part of a screening test for Down?s syndrome (see below).
You should be offered another scan, normally between 18 weeks 0 days and 20 weeks 6 days, to check for physical problems in your baby. This is called the anomaly scan. Your doctor or midwife will give you more information about the scan and what the results may mean for you so you can decide whether you want to have the scan or not. If the scan shows a possible problem, you will be referred to a specialist to discuss the options available to you. It is important to realise that no test is 100% accurate.

THis is what you are supposed to be offered. Speak to your midwife/GP and ask why your area is ignoring the national NICE guidelines.

Aaaaaaaargh, I CANNOT be pg, we only had full explosions on day 8 and then from day 20 onwards and I'm pretty sure I OV'd on day 17. I'm not testing as I only have 1 test and want to save it!

Also if I am now then I would be at my worst sickness wise for my brother's wedding which I really don't want.

And I still have several things left to do on The List!

NatalieJane · 18/04/2008 16:09

LMAO, You will only know if you test (do it, do it, do it)

What makes you think you OV'ed on CD17?

And just think, if you are pregnant, then the list is very insignificant, he can't hold you to ransom on something you've already won!!

lardylumps · 18/04/2008 16:17

moos who cares about the list now... test test.

Playing we only get one scan here and that is the 20 week scan.

NJ my dp has got a dougnut at the back of his head as well but he is so upset about the front receding (he is also going very gray (like a badger)) that I havent told him and make sure all mirrors in the house are angled to avoid him finding out.

NatalieJane · 18/04/2008 16:22

LOL LL, I have dropped little comments about the thinning, but he either doesn't pick up on them, or he doesn't care. I must admit, it is probably the latter, as long as he is clean and smelling fresh, he isn't the sort of man to stand in front of a mirror for hours moisturising and geling his hair (luckily eh?!!!!)

It is bad about the scans, or lack of them, if that is what NICE say, then that is what should happen. I suppose it is just another way to save the pennies though...

kayzisexpecting · 18/04/2008 16:28

You get a scan at 12 weeks and another at 20 here too.

MOOS!!! TEST!!!!

My dh is the opposite, he has loads and loads of hair and needs it cutting all the time to keep it under control.

Playingthewaitinggame · 18/04/2008 16:29

I know you weren't suggesting that I was wrong - but of course I have no personal experience of this - yet

I wonder if the guideline are just guidelines. Surely that couldnt get away with it if they had to obide by them . I'm not too bothered an 8-11 week dating scan only seems to cost £50 and a 20 - 24 week Fetal Detailed Anomaly Scan only £100. So if I have to pay I will!

NatalieJane · 18/04/2008 16:32

I cut DH's about once a month, it does grow very quickly, and because it is very black hair, once it get's past 'the freshly cut' stage it just looks manky and yuck.

I am sure he would pleased about me telling people of his manky yucky thinning greying hair. LOL

luvingtinkerbell · 18/04/2008 16:33

same here k my hubby has lots of hair and it grows to quick!! he has a few stray grey hairs

kayzisexpecting · 18/04/2008 16:34

You'd think they would do both. What if the worst happens and the baby doesn't survive. Do you wait until 20 weeks to find out???

They only used to do the 20 week one in Birmingham when my sister had her DD so she told the MW she had been bleeding to get a scan at 12 weeks, sneaky but it worked.

lardylumps · 18/04/2008 16:34

You dont need 3 scans playing. I would not do the dating one as this will change by the time you get to 16 weeks and again at 20 weeks anyway.

I didn't have a dating one and the date they gave me from my last AF was correct to the day but the date they gave me from the 20 week scan was 4 weeks out.

Playingthewaitinggame · 18/04/2008 16:35

My DH has loads of thick hair as well and is def beginning to go grey.

NatalieJane · 18/04/2008 16:37

I think the guidelines are there to show patients the level of care they should expect, I suppose it gives people an understanding of what should and shouldn't be done, and if they aren't happy then they can take it up with their hospital.

There is a website somewhere that shows exactly what different hospital's offer, it used to be linked to quite a lot on MN, but haven't seen it for ages. It may have gone out of date or something.

Playingthewaitinggame · 18/04/2008 16:37

I know you dont need 3, I probably wont bother but its nice to know I can if I want to if that makes sense. Or of course if I am just too impatient to wait to 16 weeks for a scan

NatalieJane · 18/04/2008 16:40

It hink I'd probably pay for the 12 and 20 week ones, and leave the 16 week one out, personally.

luvingtinkerbell · 18/04/2008 16:40

wow my hubby has black haoir too

NatalieJane · 18/04/2008 16:41

I think, even, not sure where the Caribean accent came from then!

Which reminds me, try and say beer can, outloud, without sounding like a Caribean man

kayzisexpecting · 18/04/2008 16:42

My DH is ginger!!

Playingthewaitinggame · 18/04/2008 16:43

yeah I know what you mean Nat, it just seems such a silly time to have one! I would rather have a 12 and a 20 week than a 16 week.

NatalieJane · 18/04/2008 16:43

Me and DH both have dark hair, DH especially, but the boys are both quite fair, quite blonde in the summer.

Playingthewaitinggame · 18/04/2008 16:43

that one still makes me laugh now Nats and it been years since I first heard it!!

NatalieJane · 18/04/2008 16:46

LOL My sister reminded me of it at the weekend. My mums best friends boyfriend (are you following?!!) was a proper black jamacan man, really chilled out maaaan type of bloke, he told us it when we were about 7 or 8 something like that, used to make us giggle like mad. Had forgotten all about it till my little Ssiter asked her fiance to pass her the beer can and we both looked at each other and said BEER CAN, LOL oh how we larfed....!

OK OK, it was funnier if you were there.....
