Short Luteal Phase

mascaraisamust · 05/07/2015 22:57

So after 6 months of ttc I've worked out I've got a short luteal phase of 9 days, however it could be even less. I get a positive opk on day 19 and 9 days later AF appears. I'm fearing it could be less that 9 days if I ovulate 24-36 hours after a postive opk. No suprises that there hasn't been a bfp yet. I'm thinking this is my obstacle. Seems I've tried everything else. Do I go to my GP? Is there any point? On preconception vitamins with b6 in and have been in them for three months and no changes. Also AF is really painful every month, wondering if there is more to this. Any ideas? Or anyone experienced/ing similar?

BFNs are so demoralising :(

I've only ever taken one test as once I decided to take an early response when I was 9dpo - AF arrived about 20 minutes later with a humiliating GUSH.

Never bothered since.

mrsmugoo · 04/08/2015 12:44

My appointment at the fertility clinic has come through as Aug 25th - I should be around CD21 or 22 then which will be ideal!

mascaraisamust · 04/08/2015 13:27

Brilliant news Mrs, not long to wait at all!

It's always the way when you poas, I stupidly tried a CB one just and bfn. It's only as I'm on holiday and don't want to feel guilty about having a drink.

Could you be ovulating late mascara? If your BBT is rising?

Although mine spiked quickly the day after my positive opk rather than a slow rise.

mascaraisamust · 04/08/2015 21:44

No idea, I've been regular for the last five months so who knows what's going on!

I hope AF arrives for you soon because the hanging on waiting is sooooo annoying.

I just want mine to come NOW! I'm so emotional and erratic at the moment Confused

Morning ladies, I just wanted to say a quick hello Smile I came across this thread last night (joined MN last week) & realised there is a good chance I fall in to this category too. My cycle is 43 days & I got my peak on day 33 so with the 24/36 hour rule I guess that makes me 9 days at best? I've only had 4 cycles so far (due to them being rather long) & can only base this on one cycle (due my issues with a CBFM) so suppose I'm best monitoring it for a few more cycles yet just to be sure. I'm thinking of temping as well as using the monitor/ovulation sticks this cycle to try & get a clear picture but I'm going to have to research this method a bit first. No idea what thermometer to buy! Hope everyone is okay this morning, fingers crossed for you all x

mascaraisamust · 05/08/2015 10:17

Hi shary welcome! If it's early days it might just be your cycles settling down, my first few were long ones (40 days).

I bought my thermometer from Amazon, it was only cheap but does the job nicely. I've no idea what it all means yet though, I was planning to start temping when AF appeared but it still hasn't! My last four cycles have been 29 days, I'm now on cd31... Hmm

SharyBobbins · 05/08/2015 10:27

Hi Mascara, thank you for the welcome Smile
Do you mind me asking how long you have been ttc for? I hope my cycles shorten soon! How long did it take for you to get in to a shorter patten?
Oh my goodness your mind must be racing! Have you had any symptoms to suggest AF is on its way? x

mascaraisamust · 05/08/2015 10:40

This month will be cycle 8, TTC #1. What about you? It took 3 months for the cycle to shorten and settle. Opks confirmed I was ovulating around cd19/20 and af usually appears cd29.

This is the first month I didn't do OPKs (sods law) and day 21 tests said I didn't ovulate this month but now I'm not so sure, I might be having a longer cycle and missed ovulation completely...who knows. No usual signs of AF, I was really sick the other morning too (I had been drinking the night before but I'm never ever sick)!

Get fertility friend. No interpretation necessary as it does it all for you. You just input your temp every morning.

doobeedee · 05/08/2015 10:49

And remember, OPKs don't confirm ovulation. It could be that you geared up to ovulate then didn't.

mascaraisamust · 05/08/2015 10:54

Putting it all in FF. True doobeedee, maybe I should waste my money on them and give myself false hope!

Mascara you must be so confused right now. It must be so difficult not knowing one way or the other. How are you staying sane?!

I came off the pill in the new year & I'm currently on my 5th AF. I can't seem to think straight when it comes to ttc. Literally one hour I'm thinking 'its not been that long, try to relax about it all, give your body time to adjust' & the next I'm thinking that there must be something wrong with me because of my cycle length etc. Part of me is telling myself to wait 12 months to see the GP & the other half is telling me to get the ball rolling just in case....The latter part of me just won out....Shock
I've just called my GP surgery to see if any of the doctors there have a relevant specialism (they don't) & ended up telling the receptionist all of the above. She's going to get the on call GP to call me (I was NOT expecting her to say that) just for a chat about whether its to early for an actual GP appointment. I'm not sure what just happened to be honest! Now I feel sick! Sad

Shary when the GP calls just ask for bloods to be done like the day 21 ones to confirm that you are ovulating and to see that your progesterone levels are ok. That's the only reason they've taken me seriously as my progesterone was 1 which confirms it's not ok and that I'm not ovulating.

I am confused, but with a progesterone level of 1 a pregnancy would not be viable so I'm trying to get the thought out of my head!

Just keep chatting on here, I'm on holiday so keeping busy!

copa thanks for your input. I'm hoping they check for PCOS etc as my AF can be extremely painful! Got a doctors appointment next week so I'll be going in with my list!

SharyBobbins · 05/08/2015 11:26

Thanks Mascara, I'll definitely ask for the blood tests although I've a sneaky suspicion he's going to tell me to not waste his time & bugger off!

Hope you're okay & you've got a nice day planned xx

mascaraisamust · 05/08/2015 11:30

Don't let them get a word in edge-ways and blag them with stats! Tell them you've been using the CB fertility monitor too! I'm in the car currently, long drive!

Mascara- that didn't quite go as expected! The GP was lovely and said I was okay to call after 6 months (I thought he'd say 12- I'm guessing its the more to do with the long cycles). As I got my 'peak' on cd33 last time he's asked me to come in for blood tests on either cd34 or cd35. He said they'll be testing follicle-stimulating hormone levels, luteinising hormone levels & progesterone levels as well as testing my thyroid and doing a full blood count. I'm just not sure whether cd34 or cd35 would be best (would it make a difference?) x

mrsmugoo · 05/08/2015 13:32

Wow your doctor sounds amazing!

I just had a telephone appt with mine and got my blood results.

They were
Day 21 last cycle -

SharyBobbins · 05/08/2015 13:44

Mrs, the GP is saying they can do nothing for 2 years? That's disgraceful Angry They can't just expect you to put your life on hold for 2 years especially when the tests indicate there is a barrier to you conceiving. I'm glad to hear you've been able to go private but it must be incredibly frustrating that you've had to in the first place.

I'm already feeling nervous about the outcome of the bloods. I wish he'd said say 34 or 35 not either day as I don't want to pick the wrong one if that's even possible. I read somewhere that its supposed to be 7 days before your next period? So I guess day 35 is closer to that! x

mrsmugoo · 05/08/2015 17:05

Yes that's exactly what they're expecting! She basically said I can't expect to have a baby exactly when I plan to and that in two years I would probably conceive naturally anyway, that anovulatory cycles are not uncommon and that its perfectly normal to ovulate sometimes but sometimes not and most people aren't getting themselves "all worked up" each month on OPKs and so don't know one way or the other.

Just so bloody frustrating.

SharyBobbins · 05/08/2015 17:39

"All worked up"?! Is that what she said? Shock Shock Shock Shock Shock How patronising!! How on earth did you keep it together? x
