ok, as the january thread reached 1800 posts exactly, well it did at last count, I think it's time we started the February thread. Now February has lots going for it, valentines, extra reasons for BD, it only has 28 days, the average length of a menstral cycle, .. so me thinks feb will be a very positive month for all of us!

Happy BD to all! (((hugs))) xxx

whats a doppler?

wannaBe1974 · 02/02/2006 15:47

Mumswish I would seriously advise against getting a doppler. Generally it's quite difficult to find a heartbeat on yourself, especially as you don't really know where to look and the midwives are better qualified to do these things, and it can lead to a lot of unnecessary worry/paranoya if you're not able to find a heartbeat.

Hiya Nellie, how are you today?

mumswish · 02/02/2006 15:49

wuzzle, its a machine that allows you to hear the heartbeat (like the midwives do)

wannabe - did you have 1?

I am a bit torn over the doppler thing (another thing that has changed in four years!!!) Half of me thinks yes wouldn't it be great to be able to hear the heart beat when you wanted to, but then the other half of me thinks trained midwives sometimes find it hard to find a heartbeat in a very healthy baby, how would you feel if you couldn't find it one day? I know you would tell yourself it is because you are not a midwife, but it wouldn't stop me worrying about it and probably causing a whole lot of stress that a pregnant woman really doesn't need!! Cool idea but not sure...

wannaBe1974 · 02/02/2006 15:52

No i didn't have one but I did have friends who did and they spent most of their time looking for a heartbeat and being unable to find one, and it led to a lot of frantic moments.

Like I said I am 50/50 about them, I suppose the best thing would be not to buy one until you can feel movements from the baby at least that way if you didn't find a heartbeat but the baby was moving you would have no need to panic!!

mumswish · 02/02/2006 15:57

I must admit, i'd love to get one because I know I wold be panicking the whole time, due to previous times so I'd love some reasurrance but at the same time I'd be so panicked if I couldnt hear it and I wouldnt be able to rationalise it either.

Nellie - glad to hear your ok, sorry your a bit broody but i'm sure it wont take long.

I'm really looking forward to tonight, I feel like a firsttimer, its wierd.

Well they do say that they're only really easy to use from 26 weeks by which time you have regular movements anyway so I reckon I would just count on the movements and save the 60 quid for something else. At my 39 week anti natal appointment the doctor had a faulty doppler and couldn't find a heartbeat and she said to me, very unsympathetically "do you feel your baby move a lot?" she might as well have said "I think your baby is dead", but I knew he wasn't because he'd been moving all morning and I said "oh yeh, here I'll wake him up for you" and prodded the bump at which point he kicked and she had to conceed she was wrong and get another machine, stupid cow.
