We are doing a secret Santa where the rules are, something you did not know you needed. There is a budget of £10, I have a 55 year old woman (close relative) to buy for.

I am looking for ideas for something you would not know you needed. Any ideas would be amazing

Which one exactly please?
Have tried a few but they never seem to work very well

I bought this one:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Philips-GC026-00-Fabric-Shaver/dp/B00E3862DE/ref=asc_df_B00E3862DE?th=1

I have just noticed though it’s gone back up to full price. I paid £7.99 for it back in November and must have got a Black Friday deal.

there is so much tat about at Christmas. I wouldn’t really like any of these. Tuck the tenner in an envelope and give that, its honestly the best gift :)

Please don't spend your money on any of these for me. No, PLEASE don't! They're all the type of things I've seen in odd catalogues & thought, smiling, 'who BUYS these?'
I'd put them straight in the bin. I feel as though I'm on another planet!
Not making fun of anyone or wanting to hurt feelings, I'm just.. REALLY?

You sound very like my parents! Can you suggest anything within the OPs budget that you would like to receive? (Not being snarky, just fishing for ideas for our table gifts!)

Shouldbedoing · 13/12/2025 09:15

I second wooden toast tongs, especially if they have a magnet to stick to the toaster and the head torch.

What would you suggest that hits the brief that you wouldn't hate? It's easy to "nope" other people's suggestions, but harder to come up with something that helps OP.

Would you choose to take part in this particular secret Santa?

Rechargeable hand warmers are great.

I also got my dad a wind up torch which also has a radio and a couple of USB slots. I got him it in case of power cuts but he has used it a lot.

The Turtle Dove gloves suggested by pp are £20 in the sale unfortunately.

I can't remember the proper name but my suggestion is one of those perfume spray bottles. The one you add your own perfume to for your handbag.

dontdarepokethebear · 13/12/2025 10:04

If she likes gardening (or not) - gardening clogs. Under £10 and so useful to slip on to pop outside rather than faff with proper shoes.

Might be a touch over your £10 limit, but an egg cooker. DH bought me one about 5 years ago. I love it. I use it a couple of times a week - but I bloody love a boiled egg! 😂

Does it stop you leaving the eggs boiling and the pan going dry or worse still the eggs exploding and the shell embedding itself in the ceiling? Asking for a friend….,

fuzzyduck1 · 13/12/2025 10:24

My FIL gave me all his grandads tools. He was a bus mechanic in the 30’s so I now have 3 heavy toolboxes full of useless spanner’s.

cornflakecrunchie · 13/12/2025 12:26

@Glamba & @staringatthesun I don't know whether you can get them, but I'd like a voucher for a delicious festive coffee somewhere! What a treat! Especially the place in the woods not too far from me. Or a 'boring' book token - obviously I don't find them boring at all! I've only ever had my nails professionally done once, eyebrows never, so a token to go towards that would be brilliant, & give me the push I needed to go!
A bag of animal feed & a coffee at a petting farm - lovely! Obviously lots of you might turn your noses up at these ideas, they aren't for everyone, but I'd be in Heaven! :-)

I’ve got one and it’s crap! Would love to know what make yours is!

It’s an Oracer - plugs into the mains and I’ve never had a problem with it 😊

The seconds are a tenner a pair - thanks to this thread all my friends are getting some this year. I love mine and wear them all the time.

@cornflakecrunchie to me the coffee and book tokens are fine as completely generic ideas but I don't think they fit the theme in the slightest. Most of us already know we drink coffee and read books. And if the recipient never reads normally then a book token as a "thing you didn't know you needed" could come over a bit patronising.

cornflakecrunchie · 13/12/2025 12:58

Adopting a donkey? A long lasting plant? Visit to a National Trust property? I dunno, I just wouldn't want more rubbish cluttering my house up! That's just me.

GrumpySparkler · 13/12/2025 14:40

@TorroFerney it stops when the water evaporates and emits a very loud, very annoying sound to tell you the eggs are ready 😂

SanFairyAnnie · 13/12/2025 14:51

A shopping tote made from recycled plastic which folds away small enough to keep in your coat pocket.

sellotape12 · 13/12/2025 15:07

The JML Knee pillow. Trust me! I’ve bought it for so many people and at first people are a bit like “…okay..!” and then they call months later and say it’s life changing.

ExquisiteDecor · 13/12/2025 16:04

Someone gave me a knee pillow. I was a bit WTF but I gave it a try. It got in the way, cluttered up the bed, was just generally annoying and made no difference whatsoever to my quality of sleep (I have no knee issues). I got rid of it.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 13/12/2025 17:25

Adding to those saying one of those rechargeable candle lighters. I bought some for my kids last year and they use them for lighting fires as well as candles (they will light a firelighter). Very useful if you live in a house where the matches perpetually go walkabout.

bridgetreilly · 13/12/2025 18:09

This cloth is one of the best things I’ve bought this year. Like an oven glove without actually having to put an oven glove on. Ideal if you normally reach for a tea towel, because it is actually heat proof.

Popfan · 13/12/2025 19:33

I'm 51... haven't read the whole thread but so many of these ideas are dull old lady gifts! Sorry!
I'd like something pretty... if it's a tenner you can still get some really nice jewellery from somewhere like FatFace. Have a look at their website. That's what I'd like!

Atomiser? I love mine - easy to fill up and I take it on holidays as it has enough capacity

I love mine too but wouldn't gift something that might have holes or stains
