What are your favorite starters? Or do you skip them?

I like broccoli and stilton soup but husband and children arent keen.

Smoked salmon , some sort of terrine salmon asparagus and water cress.

hholiday · 25/11/2025 20:54

We do a platter in the middle of smoked salmon, slices of melon and prawns and people can help themselves with a slice of bread and some Marie Rose sauce to spoon over. If people don’t eat much, you can just put clingfilm over and eat it later!

hmmnotreallysure · 25/11/2025 20:56

Ah we're old school 80s and still have a prawn cocktail

TrickyD · 25/11/2025 21:15

Like StewkeyBlue we have Christmas Dinner in the evening, canapés and champagne in the sitting room beforehand, rather than a first course at the table.

tobermoryisthebestwomble · 25/11/2025 21:41

I'm doing a choice of prawn cocktail with brown bread and butter, pate and toast or a soup, probably parsnip. I like to have a gap between starter and main (normally the point where I take the meat out to rest and put the Roasties in)

IsThisLifeNow · 25/11/2025 21:48

We dont bother, we do eat late though, usually around 4pm, so a small party food lunch is usual, smoked salmon, cream cheese and oatcakes too sometimes.

mondaytosunday · 25/11/2025 21:55

We used to have prawn cocktail or soup when I was growing up, but these days we skip the starter as we love the main course too much!
My MIL used to serve a salmon mousse served with thin toasted pita bread which was yummy.

DanceMumTaxi · 25/11/2025 22:10

We skip it. More room for roast potatoes and pigs in blankets.

Whatwouldnanado · 25/11/2025 22:13

I have tried to ring the changes but my lot insist on melon (with port) or soup both with warm bread. 70s time warp indeed.

curious79 · 25/11/2025 22:16

Champagne! Then straight to full roast

IndigoBabble · 25/11/2025 22:28

We do smoked salmon blinis and some homemade sausage rolls with fizz at around 12ish. Skip a starter and have main around 2pm.

Kickinthenostalgia · 25/11/2025 22:56

Half have prawn cocktail and the other half is pate and Melba toast 😂

LarryIsMyRomanEmpire · 25/11/2025 22:59

Prawn cocktail or it's not Christmas dinner!

JDM625 · 25/11/2025 23:04

Its often just DH and myself, so we just have the main. If our 6ft 7 friend comes, we do entrees.
Generally prawn cocktail or this salmon terrine

We do a salad e.g pear and Stilton with some green leaves or something else. We tried soups, smoked salmon, prawn cocktail, pate and all of them were a bit too much.

OnlyOneAdda · 26/11/2025 00:24

Loving the high volume of retro starters! 😁

Also chucking at all the "we don't have one" or "we just have canapés" posts...we do both 😂 #fatties

When I was a child it was always crab (tinned!) and prawn cocktail, a few dalliances with other things - smoked salmon and other seafood - but for the last several years homemade Beetroot & Clementine Gravadlax

Chuckling!!!

Nottogetapenny · 26/11/2025 00:30

Skip the starter. We now have Canapés and champagne. Much nicer, and have them while preparing the main course.

Fends · 26/11/2025 00:43

Choice of soup, prawn cocktail or garlic mushrooms 😋

SnowFrogJelly · 26/11/2025 00:47

No starters required

elliejjtiny · 26/11/2025 00:54

Prawn cocktail for those people who like them, fruit for everyone else.

WhosThePratInThePartyHat · 26/11/2025 00:57

I do pate and 1 round of granary toast for DP, and I have melon and Italian ham. It’s really only a ‘taster’ as don’t want to spoil main meal!

DramaAlpaca · 26/11/2025 01:06

We always go full-on retro prawn cocktail, with an equally retro melon option. I'd like to change it up, but the family won't let me!

HolidayHappy123 · 26/11/2025 01:43

We like to serve soup in mini coffee cups alongside canapés including smoked salmon blinis. Soup flavours vary year to year but no one will ever forget the time my aunt served Jerusalem artichoke soup. My farts on the way home were like nothing I have ever experienced before or since!

Crikeyalmighty · 26/11/2025 02:42

StewkeyBlue · 25/11/2025 18:15

Have never bothered.

We have Christmas Dinner as an evening meal, and have smoked salmon for lunch.

There is often a big gathering round the table and starters just adds extra crockery and cutlery just when the kitchen is at its busiest. The Christmas meal is such a feast I can't imagine wanting to mess about filling up on salad or soup.

Some lovely canapes with champagne at pre-dinner drinks an hour before dinner is a possibility.

That’s exactly what we do -
