Xmas gifts I hate receiving

As Christmas is approaching the gifts I dread getting that I get every year are : Xmas themed socks , slipper socks , body lotion , body scrub. Christmas ornaments , Christmas mugs and glasses . Really cheap pound shop chocolate . Mulled wine or spicy biscuits. They don’t go to waste as I donate them to charity . What are the gifts you dread getting ?

One person’s “thoughtless tat” is another person’s considered purchase.

I am not dreading any presents.

steppemum · 24/11/2025 12:31

all smellies - soaps, skincare, lotion etc as I only use very specific ones due to sensitive skin.

all socks etc becuase I have mens size feet not lasies size feet

alcohol because it doesn't get drunk.

cheap aldi chocs (looking at dh) I HATE them. I am happy with Lindt, Cadburys and Galaxy.

Any ornaments of things to hang roudn the house. Nope.

Anything Christmas themed, I have too much

I don't think I am hard to buy for, I tell my (adult) kids just go to Lush for soap, get me cadburys chocs, buy me a plant, or any silver jewellry, or an experience eg theatre tickets/meal out/cinema token. Do they listen?...... no

VeruccaSalty · 24/11/2025 12:33

I just had to Google Lindor because I couldn't believe people would actually be dissing those lovely ball things.

I really don't like novelty gifts but everything else I just think ah well and try to use.

Happyjoe · 24/11/2025 12:36

Booze as I don't drink and I give it away.
Body care sets - I refuse to use anything tested on animals and that stuff goes in the bin or charity shop.
Ditto with sweets, I only eat vegetarian.
Anything for the cat, some of my neighbours give the cat a present, despite me asking them not to as there's not a single treat on the market and she, like all adult cats, don't really play much with toys.

Ah yes, I forgot about the cat stuff!
People are being thoughtful getting stuff for my cats but unfortunately:
a) they only like a couple of types of (very expensive) treats
b) one of them has a bowel condition and can only eat certain things. Bringing food or treats in which she can't eat but the others can causes chaos and fighting
c) mine do play with toys but they are very fussy about which toys and most things other people bring are looked at with disgust and then ignored.
d) if someone happens to choose a good toy which they like, they've usually only bought one of the toy and the result of that is, once again, chaos and fighting.

Things that I would like in principle, but are just the wrong colour for me..happens a lot, things like gloves and scarves. It's very disappointing when I can see that someone had spent time and money trying to get something they think I would like ( or even followed instructions) but got it just slightly wrong. Eg beautiful woollen scarf, but with dominant theme of brown which doesn't suit me and which I never ever wear, or a red hat but tomato red ,not cherry or raspberry red.
It makes me feel really ungrateful.
Everything else I can cope with, because I don't feel bad taking it off to the charity shop, or giving it to someone else.
But I'm not keen on scented things unless it's rose, jasmine or what I describe as 'seafresh'. I particularly don't like anything with the slightest whiff of oud or cocoa. I don't like chocolates with fruit flavour, and I'm not keen on those praline chocolates.
On the other hand, I love getting homemade chutney, jam and biscuits and I'm not fussed about the brand of creams and lotions so long as the smell works for me. Lindor chocolates are welcome here!

Silk scarves
Hair accessories

One year I'd make a whatsapp group with them all and say let's all list the things we want and put in here. Say specifically you only want things from your list and work it out amongst yourselves who is buying what.

That way still a surprise as you don't know what they choose but you won't be disappointed.

TheFormidableMrsC · 24/11/2025 12:44

Bath salts.

Rainbowcat77 · 24/11/2025 12:45

I’m a nightmare to buy for so generally ask people not to worry about getting me anything.
my biggest bugbear is wine or alcohol of any description because I haven’t touched alcohol since May 23 for a specific reason that I’m quite open about. So it feels incredibly lazy and thoughtless if somebody I know well gets me a bottle of wine in a bag.
that said, it doesn’t go to waste because the wine flows freely on Christmas Day and that’s my contribution.

WhatAreYouDoingSundayBaby · 24/11/2025 12:48

Agree with body lotion, I never use it and it just ends up in the bin.

Anything 'decorative' that's meant for display around my home - we only have a flat so don't have loads of space for ornaments, framed pics etc that others have chosen for us. If I'm going to have decorative items I'd far rather choose them myself.

Endless tat gifts for DC - novelty Christmas headbands/glasses, cheap toys that will never be looked at again. MIL is notorious for this, but she loves to shop so it's a joy for her.

PotatoPrometheus · 24/11/2025 12:50

Chutney 😑

Laiste · 24/11/2025 12:51

Bayliss and Just like bloody Washing up liquid Harding!

Any other cheap body care which you'd never in a million years buy as a gift but suddenly because there's two of them in a box with a picture of a xmas tree on it and it's ok ?!?

Dont mind anything else.

Laiste · 24/11/2025 12:54

Oh god yes wine would be awful because i hate it. But everyone knows that so i never get it.

MIL loves to buy Bailys which is ok. I only drink it at xmas though and then only a glass or two if i remember. So it all sits gathering dust year on year with its brothers 🤣

I must be really lucky as I don't get anything like that.
The one thing I DO tend to get is cherry liquer chocolates which I do hate. I love Cherries so I think people assume I will like cherry liquer chocs but I hate them.

turkeyboots · 24/11/2025 12:56

Any lotion or potion gift set. I can only use a limited range that I don't react too, so it all goes to charity (and the repeat offender gifter always gets upset).

Sassylovesbooks · 24/11/2025 12:57

Toiletries, because I get eczema, and can't use the vast majority of products. Liquor chocolates, although I drink spirits etc, I dislike it in chocolate. Mulled wine is just gross!

Oh god we have the same with our dogs.

I feel so ungrateful but every year people buy us those stockings filled with crap and artificial dog treats which we can't give to them unless we're prepared for their bowels to explode all over the living room carpet 😭

TheTortiePuffinNeedsHerBreakfast · 24/11/2025 12:58

I generally view Christmas gifts as a nice bonus rather than anything else. Even if I don't particularly care for what's given, I appreciate the thought. I am pretty prompt about moving stuff on that I won't use though. For me, I pass on pretty much all toiletries, chutneys, scarves, socks and slippers.

I LOVE cherry liquors! Send them my way please😍

Pretty much the same as you with the addition of candles and jewellery.

Just give me a bottle of gin!

JudgeBread · 24/11/2025 13:02

I'm obviously very easy to please because the only present I've ever had that I didn't like was a completely bizarre furry sparkly cap from my uncle 😅

Poodlelove · 24/11/2025 13:07

Thornton's chocolates 😩 tea towels , oven gloves , ornaments , flowers , soap, body lotion , Christmas cake.

Jemma8 · 24/11/2025 13:08

I'm always surprised on these threads as it sounds like so many people receive (and give) very widely. I only buy for my immediate family, nieces and make a contribution towards DC's teacher gifts.

So many adults seem to get stressed and broke buying each other stuff that nobody likes. maybe it's time to consider stopping gifts / agreeing on a Secret Santa / buying for kids only / making a charity donation/ having a meal or walk together instead?

Marble10 · 24/11/2025 13:22

I like most things as I get giddy over the thought of a gift no matter what it is 😂
use most shower gels/bath stuff, donate the lotions and hand cream as I don’t use that as I’m particular with what I use. Use any candles at some point so that’s fine. Chocolate again I’ll eat anything. Not a huge drinker but I keep the wines for when needed to give stuff for a tombola/fete so that gets used

I don’t like getting mugs because I cannot stand a random mug that doesn’t match the rest of my cups. Jewellery because I think it’s so personal and can’t be chosen by a random aunty who sees you once a year. Or ornaments , again I’m so particular with the stuff I have in my house.
