Xmas gifts I hate receiving

As Christmas is approaching the gifts I dread getting that I get every year are : Xmas themed socks , slipper socks , body lotion , body scrub. Christmas ornaments , Christmas mugs and glasses . Really cheap pound shop chocolate . Mulled wine or spicy biscuits. They don’t go to waste as I donate them to charity . What are the gifts you dread getting ?

I think we should be just grateful that someone is thinking of us with the token of a gift.

Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t want to receive a wasteful amount of ‘things’ that I don’t need but it’s lovely to receive a little something.

and if no one got me anything, I’d get myself a little something. A bar of nutty chocolate, a candle, a new face cream, just ‘something’

Have you actually read the thread? The gifts that are clearly veiled insults, the huge waste of plastic-wrapped goods that are unusable due to allergy etc etc? Or just weighed in with #bekind?

I don’t know how Bayliss and Harding stay in business.

They sell huge amounts at Christmas!

Lisa411980 · 27/11/2025 23:01

My son said something 1 year and it was "you get what you get and you don't get upset " which I think is true but what many people don't realise is that if someone works only 16 hours a week on minimum wage that body lotion probably cost them 1 hour of there wage and if you gift it to charity then that's fine but maybe have a think that is all they could afford and they chose to buy you a gift instead of maybe buying themselves a better meal that week. Stay humble not everyone has lots of money

Empress13 · 28/11/2025 04:06

Sets of small items eg body lotions, hand cream etc just buy one large item for same price ggrrrr

Give 'em to me - I'd like all of that!!

I wear Christmas themed socks year round and love a few smellies that I wouldn't buy myself.

is that what makes the chocolate stick in your throat?

I think so. I buy posh chocolate from M&S/Waitrose and it doesn't have that effect (M&S do a dark milk chocolate with orange that is divine). Toblerone is still palm oil free though! I love Toblerone, especially the orange one. 😋 (Think there's a theme. 🧡🍊)

Me and my mum like Bayliss and Harding, and I love Soap and Glory. I bought myself a load of the gift sets in the sales from last Christmas and I'm still going through them. They smell lovely and a little bit goes a long way. (The 'hand food' hand cream is really good and I use it when I'm out and don't want to lug around the huge tub of working hands cream I have.)

AhBiscuits · 02/12/2025 14:15

I'm very easily pleased but any kind of little trinket or ornament would be rehomed.

SapphireSeptember · 02/12/2025 14:29

My family send me money so I can buy what I want. Might not be a physical thing (it's a bank transfer) but I don't mind. I bought some nail polishes I wanted yesterday, so I shall wrap them up and put them under the tree. 😊

Idontpostmuch · 04/12/2025 13:06

Candles. Fortunately haven't been given any for yrs.

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 04/12/2025 13:11

Clothes - especially scarves and winter wear (December birthday). I run hot naturally, I think people think I don't have one, not that I don't want one. One year my ILs gave me five over birthday and Christmas, one person giving me one for both (and she still gives me a scarf every year).

Experience days. I never use them. To me it seems similar to saying you'll take someone out for a slap up meal, but then leaving it to them to book, provide transport and cook when they get there.

I've had some lovely experience days, but they gave their drawbacks.

All of the above.

Not really, the experience has been paid for and all you have to do is to choose the time and place ! Did you just leave them to expire, then? Sorry, realised I should have responded to thenightsky!

The one I got last Xmas was weekends only, nobody wanted to go with me, and it was at the other side of the country from were I live. It would have cost me 2 tanks of petrol and the cost of an overnight and meal in a travelodge by myself. No thanks.

Granddama · 04/12/2025 20:49

Just be thankful you have family and friends who take the trouble to give you anything.

That's OK. I'll answer, anyway, even though it wasn't meant for me 😄. Had some lovely experiences but they are hard work. The buyer doesn't get to see the conditions and doesn't always know they have restrictions as to when they can be used. Also supplements sometimes charged and have to book in advance. If left too close to expiry date you can lose out, and have to pay to extend it in order to use it. Also, often it appears that experience can be taken at a number of locations, but then you find many are temporarily not doing it, so you have to travel farther than the gift giver had intended. I try not to give them as gifts, but had to recently because the only way I could give someone an afternoon tea at a specific venue was through an experience. Turned out it was only available Sundays, so recipient had a lot of juggling to be able to use it.

SelkieDreaming · 07/12/2025 00:09

I just always ask for things I can eat or burn. So now I get chocolates and candles basically. Perfect!

Emeraldforest · 27/12/2025 20:17

I like most things or I can find a home for them somewhere! Bath bombs a bit of a no no though and I wouldn't get them for anyone else either.

Downthemiddle · 28/12/2025 11:52

Take matters in your own hands. Make it clear back in the autumn (and issue timely reminders from then on) that you will only be buying presents for children up to 16 or 18 years old. If no children are involved, you could confine the gifts to parents and siblings (no in-laws, significant others etc) emphasising that it's nothing personal, simply your own sanity-saving boundary, and that you do not expect anything for yourself in the circumstances. You may find more support from other family members than you expect! Of course, you have no need to keep things you don't want. There are plenty of options for you to dispose of them discreetly, charity shops, food banks - it's only once a year ffs.

Any home made "treats" such as biscuits, cakes etc. Ditto candles or any other home made craft stuff.

According to Mary Berry they're the best presents to give.

Don't get many presents so rarely get a bad one. I can't see what's wrong with bayliss & harding.

Because it's the same price and quality as Sainsbury's own brand hand wash, and that's not much of a gift.

jocktamsonsbairn · 28/12/2025 16:52

Scarves, I don’t wear them, never have and certainly don’t now as I suffer badly from menopausal flushes. Especially in bed and I sleep with a fan on. Everyone knows this. Yet I received 2 scarves and a hot water bottle from friends this year.
