Xmas gifts I hate receiving

As Christmas is approaching the gifts I dread getting that I get every year are : Xmas themed socks , slipper socks , body lotion , body scrub. Christmas ornaments , Christmas mugs and glasses . Really cheap pound shop chocolate . Mulled wine or spicy biscuits. They don’t go to waste as I donate them to charity . What are the gifts you dread getting ?

I don't dread as I appreciate the thought, but things that tend to head straight to the charity shop include scarves, gloves, scented candles because I already have plenty I like and a lot of scented candles give me headaches.

Some people seem to be really good at buying just the right present for someone, but there’s no one like that in my family.
DSis and I had an aunt who always gave us gifts with no thought behind them, eg if anyone remembers Tweed perfume, one year it was a Tweed gift set ( we were teenagers).

I remember Tweed 😁

skippy67 · 24/11/2025 11:32

Any home made "treats" such as biscuits, cakes etc. Ditto candles or any other home made craft stuff.

TwooooDoooozenRoses · 24/11/2025 11:34

Anything in the way of skincare or toiletries, alas my skin is terribly sensitive and I must stick with what I know!
Anything alcoholic. I used to very much enjoy a drink but have been sober now v nearly two years. Somehow family and friends manage to forget still!
I don’t really love clothes or accessories unless they’re very well chosen. I’m picky af.

On the flip side, I love getting socks, scented candles and chocolate. Thoughtless filler gifts perhaps but they’ll get used!

This is why I buy my own presents!

Me too!

Also why I stopped buying ( or receiving) presents from wider family.

im a single parent with 3 kids and money is tight so yeah I might give a ghastly bottle of Aldi Crem as a gift because it’s my budget!

Now I buy a few small treats for me and the kids presents and stockings (kids are 17/21/23). They buy me a small gift - candle, body wash, fizz - they know what I like.

less stressful and less costly - I’m finished buying already.

My ex MIL buys me a bottle of cheap wine every year and I’m grateful as the thought is what counts.

I only get gifts from dh and dd who know me well.
Just tell people you dont want them!

This! ^^

just tell people you don’t want them. Saves us the hassle and stress of buying shit for people who don’t care for them, also saves the planet 😁

Starlight1984 · 24/11/2025 11:36

The Sanctuary Spa (or whatever it's called), Bayliss and Harding or Champneys gift sets.

Lavender14 · 24/11/2025 11:36

Honestly - 'auntie' tat... I'd never ever let on but I can't stand the clutter it creates in the house. Or any of the things my mum gets me that she would love to get herself but are not my taste or style at all.

Luckyingame · 24/11/2025 11:51

Anything I don't choose myself.

theressomanytinafeysicouldbe · 24/11/2025 11:51

bath stuff - I don't bathe (I do shower but a bath bomb fizzing round my feet preparing me to break my neck doesn't do it for me)
red wine - I can't stand the stuff, I gift it straight back to my dad

same person, every year, family member who has known me 50 years

also, I hate getting anything off DH that I haven't asked for because he gets stuff he would like to see me wearing and quite frankly some of its been hideous (he does ask and I show him what I want but he buys what he thinks would look better anyway, never my style, always feel uncomfortable)

This year i've asked for a weekend/mini break - I did show him areas I would like to go but I have this gut feeling............

SuperTroy · 24/11/2025 11:53

Clothes from my mum- she has issues with my (perfectly healthy) weight and tends either to buy something far too big (18 when I'm a 12) or far too small (size 6-8- "you could diet into it!") Cheers, mum.

She also has a tendency to ask for suggestions and then buy a large number of a cheap version of the thing requested, eg suggest a Moleskine notebook and receive 20 refill pads. Suggest a bottle of bath oil you like and receive five bottles of supermarket bubble bath.

Hate is too strong a word but it is annoying, especially as she asks for suggestions- I think the message is maybe "aren't you silly to waste money on X when you could get 20 Y for the same price". Have tried suggesting she doesn't buy anything but that doesn't work either.

Redlocks30 · 24/11/2025 12:10

Praline chocolates and Prosecco. I don't like either and they seem to be a popular choice to buy teachers at Christmas.

A bottle of Sav Blanc and a bar of Dairy Milk on the other hand...!

I don't like Bayliss and Harding stuff either-it doesn't seem to agree with my skin.

WhineAndWine1 · 24/11/2025 12:13

Another reason why lists are far superior than just getting a random tat. I’m looking forward to Christmas because I know that nothing I get or give will be a waste of money.

Latenightreader · 24/11/2025 12:14

Body lotion - I rarely use it and prefer thicker cream, but I have lots.

Stuff generally. I would love to get consumables - food, wine, chocolates, jams and chutneys etc. My house is untidy and horribly cluttered and particularly ornaments and pictures make my heart sink.

dottiedodah · 24/11/2025 12:16

Anything like Bath Bombs( Can only use really mild baby bath) those Lindor chocs,Candles .Mulled Wine . I love coffee shop vouchers ,Neils yard products and something nice from M and S(esp their jewellery!)

opencecilgee · 24/11/2025 12:17

Everything you said

I particularly hate receiving xmas stuff for xmas. You open it on xmas day (usually boxing day we see DH family) and then have no use for it for about 11 months

Oh god. Buying the cheap version of the thing you asked for

i can relate. Why do people assume you want quantity over quality?

Stopped asking for stuff now

Unhappyitis · 24/11/2025 12:19

I don't really like presents with no thought.

Effort is the biggest thing to me. It could cost a pound if it was something in relation they had thought about me and what I truly enjoy.

Saying that I've stopped all birthday and Christmas present buying from friends to me. I said it was because I will be saving which is true.

But it has stopped me from passive aggressive from one friend (she's more friends with the person we have in common) and I'm quite glad about that.

Newsenmum · 24/11/2025 12:20

Oh no! I love all those gifts.

wnyaadbify · 24/11/2025 12:21

Wine - I don't drink. Always end up with loads of bottles of the stuff even though people know I don't drink.

Homemade biscuits - I live in another country and they make these special biscuits through Advent, there are lots of different kinds and they mix them up in bags to give you a selection. I can't stand any of the biscuits.

Body lotion - don't use it and don't like the feel of it on my skin

Weird random shit from one relative who has been asked to stop giving (because she buys complete tat from Temu or Amazon), I've also made suggestions of what she could buy if she still wants to - I love jigsaws so that would be an easy thing to buy and wouldn't cost more than the tat she does buy. But no.

Decorative clutter - I know some people like this kind of thing but I don't want random "stuff" which collects dust.

I'd rather have a big box of fruit and veg from the supermarket or a book or a jigsaw.

Allthebeernoidea · 24/11/2025 12:22

Hampers. We get given a couple each Christmas with foods we would never eat. They go straight to the food bank

twilightcafe · 24/11/2025 12:23

I can't believe so many people dislike Lindor chocolates.
Send them to me!

Obeseandashamed · 24/11/2025 12:24

Chocolates, mugs and toiletries

SeaAndStars · 24/11/2025 12:28

The amount of tat bought for people who don't want it at Christmas makes me reel. What a disaster for the planet.

I don't like getting any presents at all. I'm trying to live simply, not over consume and am at an age where I pretty much need nothing. I have a pact with friends and family that we don't buy presents for each other, just do lovely things together instead. It makes the run up to Christmas so easy.

thenightsky · 24/11/2025 12:29

Experience days. I never use them. To me it seems similar to saying you'll take someone out for a slap up meal, but then leaving it to them to book, provide transport and cook when they get there.
